Anders Peter Svensson was born 26 May 1856 on the farm Hjelltag in Bitterna and baptized the following day. His father was Sven Jonasson and the mother was Britta Stina Jonasdotter. I was unable to pinpoint the family in the household examination roll for roughly the same time period.
The farm name Hökagården is a vital clue that helped locate the family in the household examination rolls for Bitterna. You are fortunate to have documents that make this research easier and it underscores the importance for all genealogists to evaluate every last scrap of paper left by our ancestors.
The dates listed in the following paragraphs are listed as they were found in the household examination rolls. Unless a citation is listed, they were not verified in the primary sources (birth, marriage or death registers). It's important to note this because there are discrepancies found, as we will see.
An extract from the 1890 household examination roll for Hökagården Tolanda lists Sven Jonsson, born 1827; his wife Britta Stina Jonsdotter, born 1837; and their children Tilda, born 1867; Johannes, born 1870; Svante, born 1876; and Emil, born 1881. The parents' marriage is recorded in the register E:2, page 8, which luckily lists the birthdates of the couple. Sven was born on 14 October 1827 in Bitterna and Britta Stina was born 20 January 1837 in Bitterna. In verifying these birthdates in the baptismal register we learn the identity of their parents: Sven's parents were Jonas Andersson and Maria Svensdotter, age 35, from Björstorp in Bitterna (C:1, page 86) and Britta Stina's parents were Jonas Andersson and Anna Andersdotter, age 33, from Västergården Tolanda in Bitterna (C:1, page 137). The couple was married in Bitterna on 2 November 1855.
A quick check of Bitterna's household examination roll AI:3 (1830-1838) pinpointed the families living at Björstorp and Västergården. On page 38 of this record we find Jonas Andersson, born 7 June 1795 in Bitterna; his wife Maria Svensdotter, born 1 February 1794 in Bitterna; and their children Anders, born 27 December 1821; Johannes, born 14 December 1823; Sven, born 14 October 1827; Andreas, born 30 November 1829; and Jonas, born 4 December 1832. The record notes that this family moved to Västergården Tolanda in 1834. On page 42 of this same household examination roll we find the other Jonas Andersson at Västergården Tolanda (we differentiate between individuals by the same name by noting the birthdates). This Jonas Andersson was born in Lekåsa on 28 March 1798; his wife Anna Andersdotter was born in Bitterna on 3 December 1803; and their children are listed as Johanna, born 28 April 1831 and Anders, born 12 August 1833. For some unexplained reason, the daughter Britta Stina is not listed even though her birth falls in the time frame of the record (1830-1838).
In checking the baptismal register for Bitterna C:1 (1792-1851) we locate the father's birth entry, or at least what appears to be the correct entry. Jonas Andersson was born at Barkagården in Bitterna on 27 June 1795 and baptized on 28 June 1795, the son of Anders Svensson and Elin Svensdotter. How his birthdate morphed into 2 June 1795 in later records is anyone's guess. It's of course possible that this is a different Jonas Andersson altogether, but I think it is probably the correct one. There was a Maria Svensdotter born at Björstorp in February 1795, not 1794, but I could not decipher the day of birth. She was baptized on 7 February 1795 (C:1, page 8).
By following the second Jonas Andersson family through the household examination rolls we locate yet more information on them. In AI:5 (1838-1853) we find the family on page 26, still living at Västergården Tolanda. Here we learn that the father Jonas Andersson died on 11 April 1848 and that the daughter Johanna died on 3 February 1839. Two additional children are listed: Britta Stina, born 20 January 1837 and a second Johanna, born 28 February 1840.
Jonas Andersson's birth was verified in the Lekåsa baptismal register C:4, page 43. He was born on 22 March 1798 (not 28 March as noted in the household examination roll), baptized on 23
I see that some of my previous post did not display. Here's the missing information:
Jonas Andersson was baptized on 23 March 1798 in Lekåsa, the son of Anders Andersson and Ingrid Andersdotter. The family lived at Låckatorp frälse in Lekåsa.
The earliest household examination roll for Lekåsa is AI:1 (1799-1814). On page 12 of this document we find Anders Andersson and family living at Lockatorp Uppogården, born 1 January 1748 in what appears to be "Alg.," which might be an abbreviation for Algutstorp. His wife Ingrid Andersdotter was born 26 January 1764 in Bitterna. Among their four children is Jonas, born 22 March 1798. According to Lekåsa's marriage register E:1, page 1, this couple was married on 28 June 1789. Anders was a widower, age 37, and his bride was 26 years of age. She was given a morgongåva (similar to a dowry given to the bride) of 10 riksdaler specie.
The parents' deaths are noted in the household examination roll for the next time period, 1814-1825 (AI:2, p. 17). Here we note that Ingrid Andersdotter died on 17 August 1817 and her husband Anders Andersson died on 19 February 1819.

I am looking for my Great Great Grandfather Sven (Daniel) Sandberg. He was born in April 1833 in Sventorp Sweden. His wife is Louise. Looking for his parents!?
We are coming to Gothenburg Sweden in July and we are taking the train up to Skodve to see if we can find any of the family. Can anyone help?
I have the American naturalization papers for brothers Svante Wernhoff and Alfred Wernhoff. No patronymic name is shown on any documentation I have.
Svante was born 7th Nov 1858. His papers say he was born in Skarborg. He emmigrated in 1883 to Canada via England. He married in 1885 to Emma Christina Johnson, probably in Canada. He then moved to Massachusetts, USA. He died in Mass. in 1915. I found his obituary which stated he had one sister in Canada, one brother in the USA (Alfred), two sisters and two brothers in Sweden. His parents names given on his death certificate areAndrew Wernhoff and Johanna Johnson. These names have been anglicized.
Alfred Wernhoff was born on 25 March 1865. His papers state he was born in Skaraborglan. He married married Anna Kristina Andersson in Massachusetts, USA in 1891. His parents names are given as Anders Wernhoff and Joanna Johnson.
My question is as I do not know exaclty where Svante and Alfred were born, how can I go on with my research? I have looked at Hans Hogmans website which is very informatative. I have ordered 2 books as recommended Cradled in Sweden and Your Swedish Roots. Would really appreciate any help on how to go forward.
Wernhoff is probably a taken name in US. Found in the Emibas CD: Svante Andersson B 7th Nov 1858 in Bitterna, Skaraborgs län, Emigrated 188314th July from Ullasjö, Älvsborgs län. The only match with "Svante" "Date 7th Nov 1858" "born in Skaraborg".
Knowing where Svante was born enabled me to check the SwedishCchurch Records 1500 - 1937 on anecestry.com (page 58, image 64 of 203) I found Svante there, born 7th Nov 1858 to Anders Johansson and Johanna Johansdtr It shows the words Karty, is this a place name? Are faddrarse godparents? I have so much to learn!!
I believe I also found Alfred but born on 5th March 1865 to Anders Johansson and Johanna Johansdtr.
Again, now knowing the place of Bitterna, I searched on Ancestry in Births from the Swedish Death Index between 1947 and 2006. I found Karl Andersson Wernhoff born 28 Aug 1870. I went back to the Swedish church Records for this date and found a Carl born 28 August to Anders Johansson and Johanna Johdtr.
What is interesting is that Karl Andrersson has the last name of Wernhoff and he died in Sweden and did not go to America as far as I know. I also have a copy of the passenger list showing Svante Wernhoff sailing on the Orlando from Goteborg to Hull, England. So did they take on a permanent last name before it became law? but where did it come from - so many questions, I wish I had a time machine!!!
I shall continue to look thorugh all the birth records for Bitterna to find the 3 daughters and 1 other son. I shall also search the marriage records for Anders and Johanna marriage.
Once again, thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated.
Hello, I'm hoping to get a clue about my great-great grandmother. Her obituary says she was born Lovisa Larsdtr on 10 August 1845 and was married to L. Joneson in Sweden. They had 2 children, Sophie and Carl, and emigrated in 1869. Sophie died at sea. Mr. Joneson died before 1874. Lovisa then married my great-great grandfather, John Fredrick Johansson and they settled in Polk County, Wisconsin. Both of these great-great grandparents are said to have been born in Mariestad, Stockholm??!! I did find good records for JFJ in Djurö, Torsö, Skaraborg. Don't know where the Stockholm bit fits in. Perhaps Lovisa is not from Skaraborg, but rather Stockholm. Does anyone have any ideas about how to proceed? Thanks!
I have tried to get to see the church book AI - 8, page 92 but I can't. Is it possible for you to tell me who is listed for the family at this time. I want to be sure I have all the children I would really appreciate it. I have found the family in an earlier church book. Thank you in advance.

The connection with Stockholm I think is of Djurö, as that place are in Stockholm's län. Torsö, is an island just outside Mariestad in the lake Vänern. So where is your John Fredrick Johansson born?? In Djurö or Torsö??
Hello Annelie, JF Johansson was born on the tiny island of Djurö in the parish of Torsö near Mariestad on 4 Apr 1847. This island is now a national park in Lake Vänern. Perhaps this is where the original confusion came in - 2 places named Djurö. Maybe someone in the past did a little research and found only the Djurö in Stockholms län and didn't realize about the second one in Skaraborg. Some time ago I looked in the Torsö records and also through some of the Stockholm records (I made it up to parish names beginning with "V" so far), but couldn't find Lovisa Larsd. yet. She may have been born elsewhere in Skaraborg or perhaps in Stockholms län, or perhaps I missed her name when my eyes got fatigued! There is not much known about Lovisa except as mentioned below. She was born 10 Aug 1845, married L. Joneson (no first name and surname may be spelled differently), emigrated in 1869 with that husband and 2 young children - Carl and Sofie (and Sofie died at sea). This weekend I will try sorting through more records with the free access to Arkiv Digital. Thanks for any suggestions you may have on trying to track down Lovisa. - Barbara

They went to Wisconsin where they had changed their name to Lundberg by the 1880 census.
How do I look at their ancestors to see if a grandparent was a Lundberg?
1) On the Flyttningsbevis (immigration papers) for my great-grandparents (Anders Peter Svensson and Johanna Johansdotter), after his name, it says, "frön Bragnum Frostag: af Lekåsa Moderförsamling".
2) On (what appears to be) an inside page from a Bible, which lists names. Under Anders Petter Svensson, it says, Frostage Bragnom föd år 1856 den 26 Maj, and under that, Johanna Johannsdotter, with Frostage Bragnom föd år1855 den 7 Juli.
So, I'm thinking that it is a location, or the name of a farm?

Hi Kristen! Glad to see you are still researching your Swedish roots. I don't know what Annelie has already sent you, but I found your family in two of the household examination rolls for Lekåsa, as well as the moving out list for Lekåsa. The couple was married in 1881. Two sons who died in Sweden are listed, as well as a surviving son Karl Albin, born 30 July 1885. Let me know if you're interested in more detailed information. It should be possible to follow Johanna Johansdotter back in time in Åsaka ( = Barne-Åsaka).
Rote is a military term. Sweden had a special militarysystem there some farms a village had to provide for a soldier, some land a cottage. More you can read about at http://www.algonet.se/~hogman/swegen.htm - Swedish Military History.
Thank you, Stephen! I would like to follow Johanna Johansdotter, if possible. I continue to be amazed and grateful of the willingness to help that I am finding from you and Annalie.
Does anyone have any information with the surname Carlson, that could be of help to me? I am at a brickwall with my ggreat graandfather Alfred and Anna Carlson.
I want to know anything and everything that I can about my family. I have no family here that knows about them. I am trying to find family that may or may not know about my CMT disease and see if any other family has the same thing.
I can see that some members discussed Svante and Alfred Wernhoff and their parents and brothers and sisters. If there is someone who wants to continue this discussion I have som more data!

Glad to join. Some of my relatives came from the Järpås and Levine areas. Paternal surname of Fahlstöm came into being in 1700's. Nils Svensson Fahlström was born in 1748, but I have not been able to confirm that due to bad handwriting in the parish records and not sure of exactly which parish. He was a dragoon and died 21 Oct 1816. I was able to get a copy of his military records. I have not yet extensively researched his wife, Stina Nilsdotter, born in 1753.
Thanks for letting me join. I have a Charles (Carl) Widen, born 3/26/1856 in Bellefors forsl Skarab(org)? according to the Lutheran Swedish American church records. I have questions as to his parents - unable to find Widens. I do have a Johannes Anderson and Katarina as his parents, but I am not sure of this. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Annelie
I have tried to get to see the church book AI - 8, page 92 but I can't. Is it possible for you to tell me who is listed for the family at this time. I want to be sure I have all the children I would really appreciate it. I have found the family in an earlier church book. Thank you in advance.

Lorraine,
Free access to Arkiv Digital is being offered this weekend, allowing you to access the records you are seeking. See the promotional information below from an email I recently received:
"ArkivDigital is probably the largest private digital archive in Sweden related to family research and we have just passed the 31 million images from more than 127.000 volumes of church book materials among a lot of other records. This represents about 7 shelf kilometers of documents.
Free Swedish Genealogy research with ArkivDigital this weekend
During the next weekend from Saturday Nov 12th until Sunday Nov 13th we offer everyone free access to our image database. Take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with ArkivDigital and what we have to offer.
Special price on “1 Year” subscription
ArkivDigital 1 year for only 995 SEK approx. 151 USD (regular price is 1195 SEK approx. 181 USD). This is a great opportunity to subscribe to ArkivDigital for a low price and it can be purchased between November 8th and November 20th.
How do I research for free this weekend?
Register at: http://www.arkivdigital.net/users/register
Then you need to install our software ADOnLine: http://www.arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/installation and follow the instructions there.
When ADOnLine is installed you will find a new icon on your desktop named ADOnLine2. Double-click the icon and the program will start. Log in with your email (username) and the password you chose when you registered.
In the program you will find a list of parishes, courts, and other record holder's name on the left side. You may search for your parish directly in the search field or scroll the list. Click on the parish (or other record holder's name) on the left side and all accessible volumes for that parish will pop up in a list on the right side. Double-click the volume you want to study and the first picture of that volume will open in a new window.
Please let us know if there is any problem with your registration or opening the program!"
I'm not affiliated with Arkiv Digital but have used their records in the past. Try it for free this weekend and consider a subscription if you need to access more records over a longer period of time.

The connection with Stockholm I think is of Djurö, as that place are in Stockholm's län. Torsö, is an island just outside Mariestad in the lake Vänern. So where is your John Fredrick Johansson born?? In Djurö or Torsö??

Barbara Wells

Thanks for any help

I have found the words in two places.

Also, Stephen Kohler wrote on Feb. 20, 2011:
Anders Peter Svensson was born 26 May 1856 on the farm Hjelltag in Bitterna and baptized the following day. His father was Sven Jonasson and the mother was Britta Stina Jonasdotter. I was unable to pinpoint the family in the household examination roll for roughly the same time period.
So how does that fit in with Frostag Bragnum?

It seems to be a rote in Lekåsa also with the name Bragnum. I didn't know that. Sending you files of the churchbook throuhgt your adress on Facebook.
