My 5th g-grandfather Thomas White's family were among the earliest settlers of Sussex County, NJ, having come to New Jersey from Massachussetts. They built the first Presbyterian Church in Sussex County.
Searching for information on Browers family from Passaic County. Believe Margaret June Almond may have been biological daughter of Ellis Brower. Believe her mother Lydia Ann/ Leeanne Brower and Jacob Almond adopted Margaret after her parents died. Margaret was born 3Nov. 1847.
John Clark and his son John H. Clark came from England to Newark and opened a carriage factory in Newark or environs. John H. Clark married Sarah Jane Denman, b. ~1822 in Springfield NJ. She was probably the daughter of Joseph Denman and Abigail Miller. They had a son, George Harrison Clark, b. 1844 in Newark. He married Louisa Meisel. They had a, George Faure Clark and a daughter Jennie Louise Clark, my grandmother b. 1874. George H., Louisa, George F. and Jennie came to California, probably in the 1880's. George H. and Louisa died in the 1930's. I have death certificates on order from the state of California for them.
What is unknown:
Birth and death dates for John, John H. and Sarah Jane.
Birth and death places for John, John H and Sarah Jane. I am assuming that they died in Newark.
There has been a lot written about the Denmans and it is mentioned in the Harris book that Joseph and Abigail had 13 children, but the names are unknown.
What I want from the kind people here.
Given that they died in Newark or very near there between 1844 and 1870, what is the best approach to dealing with either Essex County or the State of NJ to get death records. I think Newark is in Essex county, right?
I'm in California so physically getting to Newark is going to be difficult.
My great-grandfather was Egbert Tallman, whose family lived in Cresskill. I'm particularly interested in his grandfather, Cornelison Tallman. I believe the family shipped freight up and down the Hudson, particularly from Huyler's Point to Nyack. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I have lots of family lines back to early Sussex County. My current problem is determining the parentage of Jacob Myers of Wallpack. He died in 1850 and the death record states he was born in Sandyston and his father was Abijah. Have been really unable to find any early records on the father, Abijah and wonder if it is a corrupted version of Sebastian aka "Bost Jon".
I am searching for a marriage record for Vincent John Lisa and Elthea Marie Parry. I am almost sure that they were married in Hudson County New Jersey. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Pat
Two sources for research in Hudson County that I have had luck with are the Hudson County message boards at Rootsweb.com, and the Hudson County Genealogical Society, www.hudsoncountynjgenealogy.org. Full disclosure- I am the secretary for the Hudson County Gen Society. I also ask a lot of questions of the New Jersey Room at the Jersey City Public Library,www.jclibrary.org.
Researching Matthias MACKEY b abt1765 (NJ) m Nancy MOON b19Jul1779 (Sussex,NJ). Married in the 1790s and moved to Ontario Canada abt 1798-99. Trying to trace either families ancestors and where they originated.
Possibilities:
Matthias s of Richard MACKEY and Mary KALSHET.
Mary KALSHET d of Mathias KALSHET and Albertine/Albertina/Harber/Tine ? surname.
Richard MACKEY s of John MACKEY from Scotland via N Ireland.
I am looking for any info about the disappearance of Ann MEEKER, wife of Albert Ross Meeker from Sandy Pond, Vernon, NJ during the summer of 1951. She went berry picking and never came back. These are the grandparents of my daughter-in-law who is trying to solve the mystery and bring closure to her family.
Re: Ann Meeker. I remember reading this story in the Morristown Daily Record several years ago. If you don't have a copy of the newspaper article, you can get one from the Joint Free Public Library of Morristown/Morris Township. They have indexes to the Morristown papers.
I am descended from the Cauldwell, Roll, and Titus families from Morris County on my mother's side. On my father's side, his German ancestor Frederick Sovereen (also spelled Sovereign, Saverin, Zofrein, and a lot of other ways) lived on Schooley's Mountain in the 1760's until about 1799; I also believe his granddaugher Elizabeth's husband Jonathan Wade to have been from this area (still trying to find evidence).
Sorry; I can never get the hyperlink to work for me. The website I tried to link can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~njmorris/passaicvalley/index.htm
I'm trying to find information on the Peter Busch Dougherty family in the northern part of Bergen County in the early 1800's, Peter having been born in 1823 in either Mahwah NJ or just across the border in Suffern NY. The Busch name could be a clue to ancestry or also the Christie surname. A diary has a phonetic spelling of the name as, "Dock-ar-ty" and may be a significant clue as to whether they were British Doughertys? There is no indication they were Catholic. There was a Presbyterian marriage of one daughter. Another clue to Busch name is "Van der Busch (Eleanor)" as it was entered in a small Forget-Me-Not remembrance booklet with no further explanation as to relevance..
Hi. I'm new to GenWise and therefore this group. I'm researching a George and Mary Ivanyo family who lived in Elizabeth, Union, New Jersey. I have found a few recent obituaries in the Star Ledger (their youngest son Stephen, and their son Joseph's wife, Helen and their daughter Rose). Unable to find anything prior to the past decade. I understand the paper used when my husband was young was the Elizabeth Daily Journal. I see it listed in the state historical society archives on microfilm, but not online. Any hints as to how to access obits from that paper from a distance? Or anyone aware of another source I'm not thinking of? I'm needing obits from 1932, the 1965, 1966, 1970, 1971, and 1997.
Have you contacted the local and state library? State archives should also have old newspapers. The county historial society and maybe even the NARA. Another idea would be check for church records. I have even emailed cemeteries and was surprised at what information they sent back.
Thanks Sandy. I did check with the "family" cemetery. And that is how I obtained most of the death details I have. They were very helpful. Just looking for more...information that we would find on a death certificate or obituary perhaps. And I am looking into which church they attended at that time.
I am searching for the burial location for Theodore Read (Reed/Reid) (1875-1918) and sons Peter (1910-1918) and Floyd (1908-1918). Last evidence for Theodore was a WW I Draft registration dated 12 Sept 1918 showing him living on Boyden Avenue in Hilton and working as a farmer for John H Van Ness at the same address. Family tradition has Theodore and sons all going with the Flu in 1918. Any leads appreciated. Keith
I am looking for the burial place of Sarah Clyde, who died 19 July 1905 and her daughter, Minnie Berry, who died 21 December 1905. Both lived in Jersey City and the undertaker in both cases was Wm. H. Mead. Place of burial on both death records is recorded as "Bergen County." I've been calling and writing all the Bergen County cemeteries I can find with no luck so far. I think other Berrys and Clydes may be buried in the same place. If anyone has run into Wm. H. Mead records before and can offer suggestions, I would appreciate it.
Deborah, Have you ordered death certificates as cemeteries can be listed on them, my other suggestion would be real estate tax office to see if the funeral home still exists and current owner they may have the records. There maybe a possibility of cremation also. Do you have the obits? It might be on them
Thanks, Sandy. Yes, I have the death certificates which is where I found the cemetery (lack of ) information. The funeral home does not exist and so far I haven't been able to find the records, but I haven't tried a real estate tax office and I don't really know what that is. I have not been able to find obits either, but I'll keep looking.
Very interested in / collect all HAGAMAN / HAGEMAN / HAGERMAN / HEGEMAN, etc. families descended from the Dutch Adrian HAGAMAN who settled in New Amsterdam. Thanks, Jim

Im Sande Meyer Smith new to this group and genealogy. My entire family is from North Jersey,I was born in Ridgewood grew up in Wyckoff,Bergen co. My family names are Meyer,VanCampen,Cook,Waardenberg .Im trying to find info on my grandfather George VanCampen who died in a horrible factory explosion in Paramus or Patterson in the late 1960s I was told his body was never found and he was buried in a mass grave that has a Mounument to the victims. Does any one have any idea how I could find out more about this?
thank you Marilyn I will try these. I am afraid I may have to look at unconventional sites to find this one,my mom is 78 and has pretty much blocked the whole thing out of her memory as she was the one who had to identify what they could recover of my grandfather, what a horrific event. I was 5 or 6 when it happened, now that I am doing our family tree I really want to find out where he was buried and possibly get a picture of the monument. It was a horrible thing but I want to remember my Grandpa George VanCampen.
Marilyn,I found the disaster on that website,it made me cry seeing how my grandpa died it was awful.I still need to find where he is buried any suggestions? Thankyou
the other article you found is the correct one,no where do they have a victim list. That is my next search but this is without a doubt the explosion he died in.
Can you believe I found my entire Meyer family at Find a grave in Fairlawn Cemetery! I need help with another side of my family if anyone has an suggestions. I can't find anything more than a 1920 and 30 US censes for my Grandpa and Grandma Cook.I cant find her Maiden name or when they died, nothing. All I have is that Adrian Cook was born in Friesland,Holland appox 1867 came to the us around 1887,Jennie was alot younger born around 1881. I think she was born in north Jersey. They had 3 children Rena,William and Peter. I know they lived in Hawthorne. Can anyone point me in the right direction where else to search? thanks
do you have any idea how I can get when they died and where they are buried? Most of my Friesian ancestors are buried at Fairlawn Cemetery,it is possible they are also they were not wealthy and may not have had headstones,I have tried to call the cemetery but my calls on genealogy are never returned,I am also trying to see if Lewis and Jessie VanCampen are buried there also.I really would like to find out because if they don't have headstones because they could not afford them I want to get then headstones! The entire Meyer and Waardenburg family are there bit they had money so all have headstones and my Grandpa VanCampen hd a headstone because the company paid for it when he died in the explosion in 1967.
