My mother's family name is Van Wig (Wanvig). Her father's father was Martin VANWIG of Trondheim, Norway (1851-1929). He came to the USA and married Ellen Elizabeth Alma MARSHALLSAY
Martin was the son of Johan Pieter WANVIG and Caroline FALCH
I have a document in Norwegian that was translated -- it is a family tree. Don't know who created it, but it was passed down from my great-aunt after her death.
What I have is the parents and grandparents of Johan P WANVIG.
Parents: Sivert J (Jonson) WANVIG [1767-1825] and Randi OLSDATTER [1769-1852] they were married in 1796. Sivert was born in Muletangen, Norway and died in Trondhjem.
Grandparents (Parents of Sivert): Jon Jonsen VOLDEN and Beret MULE
I know my great-grandfather's siblings and have gathered some info on them. This isn't quite a brick wall, but I haven't spent much time or effort on this branch - so time to get started!
hi all. I am looking for two different surnames (Hadsell or Hodsel and Ellefson) I have extensive data from Hodsel Island in Norway, but I am hitting a bump on the Ellefson side once the family moved to the USA. I have the results from the 1865 census of the Norwegian Historical Data Centre (NHDC) Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tromsø N-9037 Tromsø, NORWAY but I don't have any more info then that....
Here's what I have:
Name Family status Marital status Occupation Birth year Birth place Ethnicity
Ellef Engebretsen g Huusmand uden Jord 1817 Aals Prgj.
Janinda Thoresdatter hans Kone g 1820 Gravens Prgj. Bergens tift
Halvard Ellefsen deres Søn ug Daglønner 1844 Aals Prgj.
Niels Ellefsen deres Søn ug Daglønner 1847 Aals Prgj.
Engebret Ellefsen deres Søn ug Daglønner 1849 Aals Prgj.
Tore Ellefsen deres Søn ug forsørges af Fattigvæsenet 1854 Aals Prgj.
Ellef Ellefsen deres Søn ug forsørges af Fattigvæsenet 1855 Aals Prgj.
Ole Ellefsen deres Søn ug forsørges af Fattigvæsenet 1859 Aals Prgj.
Eli Ellefsdatter deres Datter ug 1851 Aals Prgj.
Elina Ellefsdatter deres Datter ug 1864 Aals Prgj.
My issue is that I don't understand much of this...I know the datter and the kone and stuff like that, but I don't understand enough to research this beyond this census record.
General information. Please be aware of Norwegian surname traditons are not similar ti the US.
A Norwegian name up to apr. 1900 was composed of thre parts:
1. First name given in baptism
2. Patronym = fathers name wit son/sen or datter according to sex
3. "address" = where they lived
1 and 2 remain unchanged their entire life
3 changes according to domicile
Before 1900 very few had what we today call fixed-surname
The link to the 1965 census is at http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=3&filnamn=f60619&gardpostnr=309&personpostnr=1746
I also have a record of the matriarch immigrating to the US..there is also a 1801 census and I've love to find someone there but I'm not familar with the databases
The 1865 census for Aal tellsyou:
The family of Ellef Engebretsen lived at the farm Slaatten. Ellef is aa cotter but does not have any land, he is married to Janinda Thoresdatter. The 9th column show their age and the next their sex (M= male, k= female). 11th column is information about where they were born. All of the except Janinda were born in the same area where they are now living whilst the mother was born in Graven outside the town Bergen.
They have 8 children - 6 sons 2 daughters. The three first boys are working earning and being paien day by day. The next three are supported by the municipal aid to poor people.
Torill, Thanks! I was close but thank you so much for your clarification...so now I'm confused. regarding the surname convention in Norway, how can I locate info on Ellef and Janida (obviously I will know now what town to look for Janida in)? Any thoughts? The majority of this family ended up in Minnesota. Thanks again for your help!
Ellef is born in Aal his fathers først name is Engebret. The churchbooks are online and free so you might find the baptism of Engebret there.
Here is a link to the bygdsbook for Aal: http://www.aal-bygdebok.no/
Maybe you will find him there.I did not find Slaatten there, but tha might be the name of the cotters place and then belonging to a farm we don't know of yet.
The online churchbooks are here: http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar&spraak=e
Choose Read on the first page and when it asks for FYLKE insert BUSKERUD. Then look for aal (remember it is Ål in Norwegian, the Norwegian first letter a with the o above) it is in the very end of the list
Janinda is NOT from Bergen town as such. I assume this is what we now call Granvin. You will find churchbooks under county HORDALAND. Then you have to look for Ulvin/Granvin
John Sander Myhre was b. 30 May 1900 Kongsgaden or Osteraag, Stavanger, Norway, and baptised 22 Jul 1900 St. Petri Kirke, Stavanger, Rogaland, Norway, the son of Johan Gustav Myhre and Sandra Bernoldine Gundeson.
He arrived in New York on 21 Aug 1923, and md 5 Apr 1930 in Cook Co, IL to Agnes Weidlich. They had one son, John Edmund Myhre b. 1931, d. 2000 in Spokane WA.
Apparently, Agnes died not long after that, and her husband, Jobn Sanders Myhre, has not been heard of since. I have hit a brick wall trying to find him and hopefully, some descendants.
can anyone help me?
Torill, you are wonderful! One more quick question..I found the parish records for Engbret, but I don't know what columns are what in the register.....
No, his middle names were Linden Limon. His full name was Lester Linden Limon Olson. Also, his father's name was Ole Grenadias Olson. I have no idea where the names came from. They have baffled the members of my family for many years. Of course, we didn't think to ask when the members who would have known were alive.

Can anyone tell me where someone with Norwegian parents, born in the US in about 1875, came by the middle name of "Grenadias?"
He, also, had a son with two middle names - "Linden Limon." None of my family can figure out where these names came from.
Can anyone here help?

Grenadias is not a Norwegian name. The two last letters ar the Norwegian a with the o on the top and an s. as means hill.
Have you seen other spellings of Grenadi?

The middelname. Are you sure it is Linden, Limon? Could the L be an S? Simon is not out of question
