JONES Surname Meaning & Origin:
A patronymic name meaning "son of John," the given name John deriving from the Hebrew Yochanan meaning "Jehovah has favoured." Jones is a popular surname among European Christians, as the name John was bestowed in honor of St. John the Baptist and many other saints by the name John. JOHNSON is a common English version of this surname.
Jones is the most common surname in Wales, where "son of" is denoted by the "s" ending.
* William Jones - born about 1520 in Machen, Gwynllwg, Monmouth, Mid-Glamorgan, Wales
* Hugh Jones - born abt. 1635 in England; settled in Salem, Massachusetts about 1650.
WOW! I didn't know that the Jones surname originated in Wales. That's interesting to me. My late grandmother, Jalie was born to a Mr. Elton Jones and Mrs. Carroll Margaret Cooper-Jones.
Hi,
My Jones line is from Kershaw Co., SC. My 4th ggrandfather was William Jones b. around 1725 in Wales. William ended up in Kershaw Co., SC in the 1750's. Does anyboby have any Jones line from Kershaw Co., SC?
I have three brothers Daniel, John, and Joseph Jones who came from Maryland to SC. Daniel's son Thomas W. Jones b 19 May 1716. Wm Jones b abt 1748 SC, d Casey Co Ky 1789 this Wm was the grand father of Wm who lived in IN and later moved to IA 1851. Wm Jones b 13 Aug 1776 son of Wm and Mary (Vandever) Jones, married Abigail Davis on 18, Dec 1817
Too many Joneses.....not enough time. LOL When I retire I'll devote more time to tracing the genelogy. In the meantime, maybe through limited participation, something or someone will "click the light on" in my ageing brain.
My Jones family is out of Somerset County Maryland. I'm researching a Hampton or Hamilton Jones whose son Zedekiah Jones relocated to Camden County New Jersey, circa 1895. Don't know much else about them, save what's been gleaned from the 1850 census on. Anybody out there from Somerset County Maryland who can put me in touch with current day Jones relatives?
I am currently researching Nicholas Hamilton Jones, born 1819 in Somerset County, Maryland. Hamilton is my great grandfather. I recently found a good genealogist in Maryland who is familiar with the various Jones families in Somerset County and other areas of the Eastern Shore. She also is experienced in tracing African-American families in the area.
My Jones line comes from the Danville/Catlin, Illinois area. My gggrandfather Evan John Jones married Sarah Anne Thomas. Her father and his brother came to the USA in a sailboat around 1852 and landed in New York, with the rest of the families coming in 1853. I'm needing help in filling in dates for the Catlin area.
Sarah Jones b 1857 Pennsylvania, Mary Ellen Jones b 1855 Pennsylvania d 1932, Moses Jones b 1866 Pennsylvania, John Franklin Jones b 1860 Pennsylvania.
Willis M Jones b 1908 Pennsylvania d 1972 Pennsylvania, William Oscar Jones b 1895 Pennsylvania d 1933 Washington City,DC, Viller M Jones b 1908 Pennsylvania, Harold E Jones B 1906 Pennsylvania d1969 Pennsylvania, Donald R Jones b 1915 Pennsylvania d 1994, Charles H jones b 1892 Pennsylvania d 1940, Mattie S Jones b1907 Pennsylvaniad 1995 Pennsylvania, Jennie E Jones b 1903 Pennsylvania d 1986 Pennsylvania
still looking for information about my Jones/Thomas line that ended up in the Catlin/Danville, Illinois area. Seems my gg grandfather isn't Evan John Jones after all...guess I need to get my gg grandparents marriage cert anyways.
I would like to know if any folks posting here might be related to this line of Joneses? It might be confusing with the name Jacob, but these are different generations. Jacob Jones’ father’s name was Joseph “Jo” Jones, and he was born in Corsham, Wiltshire, England in 1620. They from from England to Maryland on the Defence and Abigail. No information is available on his wife’s name and there is no death information for Joseph Jones; however, I suspect one of these two women was his wife, Elizabeth Bayly or Edith Simonds. According to ship manifests, Joseph “Jo” Jones, age 11 or 15, travelled to the United States about 1630-1635 with parents, siblings, and perhaps an aunt. They settled on the Bush River Lower in Harford County. John Jones’ parents were Jacob and Elizabeth (Stevens) Jones. Jacob Jones was born in Swan Creek, Harford County, Maryland, in 1644. No death date is available for Jacob Jones, but he died in Harford County, Maryland. Jacob Jones married Elizabeth Stevens on January 9, 1667, in Swan Creek, Harford County, Maryland, in 1672. Elizabeth (Stevens) Jones was born in Swan Creek, Harford County, Maryland, in 1648, and she died in Harford County, Maryland, in 1716. Jacob Jones’ parents were John and Martha (Lovell) Jones; they were married in Swan Creek, Harford County, Maryland, on July 8 1695. John Jones was born in Swan Creek, Harford County, Maryland, in 1672. Martha Lovell was born in Swan Creek, Harford County, Maryland, in 1674. Children of John and Martha (Lovell) Jones were Benjamin Jones, 1696-1739; Jacob Jones, 1698-1729; William Jones, 1706; and John Jones, 1715. While there are no death dates, data shows that they both died in Harford County, Maryland. Elizabeth Lovell’s parents were John Lovell, 1650-1699, and Mrs. John Lovell, 1650. William Jones’ parents were Jacob and Elizabeth (Peregoy) Jones. Jacob Jones was born in Hartford County, Maryland, in 1698, and he died in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 28, 1729. Elizabeth Peregoy was born in Hartford County, Maryland, in 1700, and she died in Baltimore, Maryland on December 2, 1740. They had four children, Jacob Jones, 1720-1773; William Jones, 1723-1791; Stephen Jones, 1726; and Benjamin Jones, 1728. Stephen Thomas Jones’ parents were William and Elizabeth (Williams) Jones. William Jones was born in Joppa, Hartford County, Maryland, on January 10, 1723, and he died in Joppa, Hartford County, Maryland, January 22, 1791. According to Individual Records of the Family Data Collection as well as Maryland Marriages 1655-1850, and Maryland Revolutionary War Records, William Jones married Elizabeth Williams on January 22, 1751, in Baltimore. Elizabeth Williams was born in Joppa, Hartford County, Maryland, in 1733, and she died in Maryland in about 1778.The oldest child of Stephen Thomas and Elizabeth Larroe (Knight) Jones of Virginia was Mary Emiline Jones, who was born in South Carolina in 1793, and died in Nacogdoches County, Texas, in 1862. She was married in 1816 at age twenty-three to Samuel Brimberry of North Carolina, 1785-1836. Their children were Eliza Brimberry born in 1819; and William Anderson Brimberry, born 1824. The family had migrated to Nacogdoches County, Texas, prior to 1850. Stephen Thomas Jones and two of his brothers, Isaac and Samuel, were in the Maryland Militia and had migrated south through South Carolina and North Carolina (Abbeville) then to what was then Georgia, where my ggg-grandfather William Jefferson Jones was born in 1815. Stephen Thomas Jones received land grants in Dallas and Wilcox counties, Alabama, where they settled. After the Civil War, Stephen Jackson Jones, the son of William Jefferson Jones, migrated to Navarro County, Texas with the Skinner (of Maryland), Kyser, Albritton, Robinson, and several other families.
I am descended from Francis Jones 1714, Isle of Wight, and his son, William. I would love to share information about this line. I have hit a wall with William but have proved his line from his son, Thomas F. to myself. Please contact me at my email: millersj@aol.com
I am looking for any inforamtion on Sina Jones b. 1807. I know not where, m. Timothy Biram Vining 22 May 1826, Meiggs County, Ohio and d. 1891 Meggs County Ohio. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Looking for parents of James Jones (1790 - 1862), who was born in PA or MD; lived in Greene County, PA. His wife was Elizabeth Henderson. They had four children - William (married Rhoda McClelland), Nancy (married Reason Dye), Hannah (married James McClelland, sister of Rhoda)' and John.
Family legend has Robert Jones as James' father, but have no documented evidence of this, however. It is reported that Robert had at least two brothers - Charles and Andrew, who located in Columbiana Co., Ohio in the early 1800 s. One or both of these brother may have relocated to KY later.
It is likely that this Jones Family came west from eastern PA, Maryland (Harford Co. (?) or VA. I have DNA data indicating that a Richard Jones (b. 1815) with ancestral roots to Charles City, VA in the late 1600s and early to mid-1700s is related. Richard Jones would be a 4th cousin or less.
I am researching the ancestry of James Jones (1790 - 1862). He married Elizabeth Henderson in about 1810/11. They had four children, William (married Rhoda McClelland), Nancy (married Reason Dye), Hannah (married James McClelland, sister to Rhoda)' and John.
James and Elizabeth Henderson Jones lived their entire lives in Greene County, PA.
Family history suggests that James Jones' father was Robert Jones. Robert found in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Census living in Cumberland Townshio, Greene Co., PA. Also family legend is that Robert Jones had at least two brothers - Charles and Andrew, who moved to Columbiana Co., Ohio in the early 1800s. However, I have no confirmed evidence on these items of information.
It is likely that this Jones family came to the Greene Co., PA area from eastern PA, MD (Harford Co. area)' or VA in the mid- to late 1780s.
I may have data on your Greene Co. JONES for PA. I wish I could locate my JONES cousin of MD. Because good chance same kin. I am having difficulty locating an M. Richard JONES. I do not know what the "M" might stand for nor do I have a DOB. My best guess is that Dick is 65+possibly born in the 1940+/-. I have very little to work with obviously. I did find a match on the name thru the SS Death index and the guy died last year at the age of 82. This sounds too old for Dick but I sent for the death certificate from NC nevertheless in hopes of finding out for sure or at least maybe find a connection.
