BROWN Surname Meaning & Origin:
Brown is generally a descriptive surname (nickname) referring to the color of the individual's complexion, color of hair, or garments, from the Middle English br(o)un, from Old English or Old French brun, meaning "brown." As a Scottish or Irish name, Brown may also be a translation of the Gaelic donn for "brown."
Brown is the 6th most popular surname in the United States and the 5th most common in England. The variant surname, Browne, is also common in England and Ireland.
Fun Facts About the Brown Surname:
Brown is the second most common surname among African Americans in the United States. Some freed slaves adopted the surname Brown following the Civil War for the obvious reason that it described their appearance, but there were also many who adopted the surname Brown in honor of abolitionist John Brown, as well as for other reasons.
My Brown lines starts with Elizabeth Brown - she was born in 1808 in Chester County, Pennsylvania -- her parents were William Brown and Sydney Stapleton/Stepleton. William Brown's parents are Jacob and ? -- so if you have Chester County Browns, I would love to hear from you..
My husband's grandfather, Howard Harrison Brown, was born in Champaign, OH in 1862, and moved around a lot: IN, KS, MO, NE, where he died in 1940. Census records indicate his parents were both from Scotland. Hit a wall with his father.
I hope someone can help me. I'm looking for information on Esther Brown. she married Phillip Sylor. I have one child listed: Esther Margaret Sylor. Esther Margaret was born 1786 in Augusta, Virginia and died Aug 22, 1860 in Lee County, Virginia. This is all I have on this family.
My father Thomas Crawford Brown came from Belfast, Ireland in 1920 to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was only 14 years old and got a job with the Canadian Pacific Railway by saying he was 16 years old. One family story says he added the e on Brown because his father already worked for the CPR and they had a rule that they did not hire relatives. Another story states that when he was called in for work they could not find his name in the Winnipeg phone book because of all the Browns listed. Adding the e made it fast and easy to reach him. Regardless of the reason I grew up with Browne. When my dad retired he had completed 51 years of service with the CPR.
My Browns are from the Hemmingford area and my greatgrandfather married Marietta (Henrietta) Tallman. Looking for any further info that anyone would have on them.

Margaret Elizabeth Brown (1834 TN-1866 MO), daughter of Squire Brown (1795SC-MO), and Elizabeth Williams (OF Coffee Co., TN to Missouri). She married William Smith, and died young in Phelps Co., Missouri.
Elizabeth Brown married Benjamin Meader/Meadows, a minister, of Bedford Co., Virginia c1800, migrated to Barren Co., Kentucky in 1850 census, living next to her daughter, Edna Thornhill. There is an indication Elizabeth may be related to Daniel Brown of 1700's Guilford Co., NC. Edna, was confused about her birthplace, so they may have lived in different places, although Bedford Virginia seemed to have been home.

Robbyn, I have a 4 Gr Grandfather, Archibald Brown, who immigrated from Scotland (not sure where or when) and married Martha McMullen/McMillan from Argyleshire, Scotland and lived in Buffalo, NY. I know Brown is a common name, but maybe there is a connection. They were married at the Scottish Reform Church in Buffalo in 1851. They had 3 sons: Hugh, born in 1855, Neil, born in 1858, and Archibald (jr?) born in 1859. I only have info on children of Archibald and none of them are Spencer. All of the brothers died after 1900. If any of this makes sense or you want more info, contact me. I'm happy to share what I can! Do you live in the Buffalo area? I don't, I'm in AZ, but go back every once in awhile.
Hey Cyndy, I'm not sure about the connection, but I'll check it out. I don't live in Buffalo, I live in FL. If I did live in Buffalo, I'd definately be a snowbird! I'm sure all the people at the genealogy societies, the libraries and court houses would be out waving bye to me in the fall b/c I would bug them to death all summer!

Greetings, my Browns are from Johan Wendel Braun from Germany through the port of Philadelphia in 1738 and in Westmoreland/Fayette Co., PA by the 1750s. My lines are from his sons Maunus and Adam, both of whom fought in the Revolutionary War. I am still digging away at their history during the border conflict. It is hard to figure out where the records might be, PA or VA. I'd love some help and I'm happy to share.
I'm looking for George William Brown, possibly born around 1860-65 in Canada. He married (maybe) Eva Virginia Conklin (daughter of Aaron and Lydia Conklin) about 1884 and they had two sons Lyle and Cecil. Eva was from Macomb, Michigan. I haven't found any marriage certificate. At some point they moved to Helena and/or Butte, Montana where George "disappeared." This probably happened before 1900. I know what happened to Eva and her son Lyle. I can't confirm anything on her son Cecil F. Brown born 20 Oct. 1885. I'm thinking he may have died young. I can find many George Browns but can't connect any of them to Eva or Lyle. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
