    THOMAS Surname Meaning & Origin:
Derived from a popular medieval first name, THOMAS comes from the Aramaic term t’om’a, for "twin." The Thomas surname is of patronymic origin, based on the first name of the father, meaning "son of Thomas," much like Thomason.

Thomas is the 14th most popular surname in the United States and the 9th most common in England.

My Thomases are from Mississippi and Texas. Matthew Thomas had a son, Charles Dawson Thomas who was born in Mississippi in 1850. He died in Burnet Co., TX. He married Laura Emily Ferguson. They had several children, one of which was my great great grandmother, Nola/Nora A. Thomas, born in Texas in 1886.

Re:Thomases from Mississippi and Texas - The Matthew Thomas you refer to is found in Lowndes County (1837 census) and Oktibbeha County (1840, 1850 and possibly 1860 census) in Mississippi. Those of us who are related to Thomases in that same area have tried to determine if he is as we suspect related to one of our lines. I believe him to be related to my GGrandfather Benjamin S. Thomas (b1822 TN), who married the daughter of a neighbor of Matthew Thomas. This neighbor, William Noel Valentine is one of the people who traveled to Lee County, Texas by wagon train in the mid 1860's along with several Thomas decsendents (possibly including the Charles Dawson Thomas you mention) and other former Oktibbeha County natives. I am aware (as you probably are) of the old story about Chalres Thomas killing someone and having to flee Mississippi, and that is why he ended up in Texas. I have no idea as to whether that story is based on fact or fiction. I would be happy to discuss this family further if you are interested. JM Thomas

J.M. Thomas, I have emailed you, but haven't heard from you, so thought I would email you here. I haven't ever heard the story about Charles killing someone. Very interesting. I have found Matthew Thomas in the 1860 census in Miss., but not the other censuses. I would definately like to dicuss these Thomases further with you.

I am attempting to trace my Thomas line which apparently started in France. William Thomas and his brother (no name) came to this country just before the Revolutiionary War, in 1774. He and his brother were scouts and settled in WV. Williiam married, started a family, and then was killed by indians. I would appreciate anyone's telling me how to search in France. Thank you. Tracing Thomases is like trying to count dandelion seeds while they're floating away. Anyway, I've traced my Thomas, in WV, line back to William Saul Thomas (known as Saul) whose father is also named William. Saul Thomas, my gggrandfather, was born in 1826 and died in 1905. "William" was a popular name in my line. I think the William Thomas who was a native of France goes back another two generations. If you (anyone) can tell me how to start a search in France , I would appreciate it. I have no other information on him. Thank you. Roberta Baum

My grandmother was Mary Myrtle Thomas Elder. There are many llines to the Thomas name that I'm just trying to find members of my line. She was descended from William Daniel Thomas and Etta May Gorrell. She had four surviving brothers: Fred, Saul, Walter and Archie. So maybe there are Thomases descended thru them. I would like to find out. The only brother I knew was Walter who had two sons: Walter, Jr., and Charles Bernard (Bernie). Thanks. Roberta

I am researching my son's family from Arkansas. George Lleeland Thomas and his ancestors. George Lleeland (Leeland) Thomas died in the early 1960's in Little Rock, Ark (Pulaski County). He married Margaret Reynolds and had 3 sons, George Jr, Gregory Lee Thomas and one other whose name now escapes me.

The youngest Thomas son and Gregory Lee Thomas are now deceased. Gregory was my sons father. I am trying to research blind and could use any help I can get. I have not had contact with the family in nearly 30 years.

    Thanks so much!

Hi, I'm new here to the actual site, although I joined last year. My Thomas name originates in either Hungary, or presend day Romania, Szatmar County. The name was spelled "Tamas," with an accent over one of the letters. My grandfather was Frank or (Ferencz) Thomas (Tamas) and he lived in Hudson, (Columbia County) NY. Born in 1897 in Hungary or present day Romania, and died 1927 in Hudson, NY. I may have some relatives in California who contacted my now deceased grandmother sometime after leaving Hungary in or around 1956. Would love to hear from anyone who may be related. Thanks!
