A descriptive or nickname given to a person with very light hair or complexion, from the Middle English "whit," meaning "white." The name may be also local, derived from the Isle of Wight, on the coast of Hampshire.

My 5th g-grandfather on my maternal side was Thomas White. He came to Virginia in the late 1700's with three sons, Thomas Sylvester "Allegheny Tom" White, David White & William White. I have been unable to ascertain who the wife & mother was. I presume she was deceased before they moved from Chester County, PA to Hardy County, VA. I descend through David (b. 19 June 1774 in PA) to Thomas Emanuel "Soldier" White to Levi White but I also descend through David's son Joseph and daughter Sarah, who married Thompson Elsey/Elza. I would very much like to find out who my 5th g-grandmother was in this line!

My White line (that I'm certain of) started with Samuel White b. 1795 in Abington MA. He moved to Pearlington MS (maybe after service in the War of 1812). In the early 1900 my gf moved to Chicago then in 1921 to Oakland CA. Any cousins out there?

I want very much to find my Catherine (WHITE) BUTKUS. I have no definite dates. I believe she died sometime between 1893 and 1907. She had two daughters that I know of, Anna Butkus b. 1892 and Elna Butkus b. 1893, both in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. Husband was George BUTKUS. They were both from Lithuania. Possibly Kilonia. I am not sure if Catherine died in Shenandoah or in Chicago, Illinois. George moved the family to Cook County, Chicago, IL in 1907. I believe he married someone named Gertrude but not sure whether in Shenandoah or Chicago...but I think it was Chicago. Daughter Anna married a Matthew Polaconis/Polakonis at the age of 14. I find her sister Elna living with Anna and husband in New Haven, CT in 1910 census. George BUTKUS (if he's the right one and he's the only one I can find at the right approximate age) died in Cook Co., Chicago, IL in 1925. I can find no record at all of the family in Shenandoah, PA. I do find a Butkus family in Illinois where two Butkus brothers marry two White sisters. Just so happens...those brothers have an Uncle George who doesn't appear to be the right age to be my George...but he is the only member of the family not accounted for...no dates, no info...just his name. Could he have run away to PA with another WHITE female??????

I don't know a whole lot about the history of the Whites in my genealogy. I do know that they were in Texas, but I don't know a lot about settlement dates, etc. I haven't really done much research yet on that branch of my family tree.

I am stuck with my ggg grandfather, Royal Osborne White, married to Avis (Mary) Crocker and Sarah Perkins. Royal seems to be a popular name, as I have 3 more. He was born in NY or MA 1805, lived in Mendon, St Joesph Co, MI, died about 1864 (no proof).
I can not find anything on his birth or death. Rumor has it that his 2 brothers married women with the last name of Lamphier in St. Joe Co. MI also. I am at a total dead end here. If anyone has anything I would be as happy as a clam!!!
    Thanks

The White family of my focus is that of Moses F. White who was born in 1802 in Georgia. He had sons Humphrey, Moses F. Jr., Virgil C., and John C. and 2 daughters of which I have no information. He married Sarah Wills in Meriwether, GA in 1830 and possibly Sarah Wills earlier. The extended family lived in Madison Co., AL, Bedford and Coffee Co. TN, , and several counties in northeast TX.
I would like to make contact with anyone who has info about this family and their descendants. I have worked about 15 years and have much to info to share.

In my earlier post I repeated the name of Moses F. White's wife, Sarah Wills, where I should have used Sarah Dobbs, who is believed to be his first wife.
I recently traveled to Coffee County and Bedford County, TN to research. I found records of land transactions and a petition for a peddler's license that contained interesting personal information.
I welcome discussion with anyone interested in this family.

This weekend, I've been focusing on a collateral branch:  Ervin Havelock White, who was born in Nova Scotia & moved to Essex County, MA.  Out of the 11 children he & wife Alice had, 10 lived to adulthood.  Kind of makes up for my sparse line (his aunt Jennie, who had just 2 kids)!
