My grandmother Dorothy Marie Vollmer was adopted by Henry Jacob Vollmer and Stella Theresa HARRIS. They had a naturally born son who was a Catholic priest. My grandmother was born in 1914.

I am hoping someone here has some reference to a Stella Theresa HARRIS in their records, as I have nothing on thier lineage.

John Earl Harris was born in 1798 in Greenfield, Saratoga Co., New York. He married Nancy Ormsbee in 1820. I haven't been able to verify his ancestry.

Well I'd say my genealogy knowledge is mediocre; but my computer knowledge and Ning knowledge has provided a few contributions around GW. My Harris line is a couple generations removed; Debbie wasn't getting any takers, so thought I'd step up. Let me know if there is anything I can assist with as group admin.

My Harris' as far as I can go back started of in Donhead St Mary, Wiltshire. My line moved from there to Chicklade, then to Codford (both in Wiltshire), Upton Noble in Somerset and then on to Lambeth in London.

Is there anyone from the John Harris (son of Sir William Harris of Creeksea) line here? He landed in Jamestown , Va. in 1624.
  • Irene Blackburn

The earliest Harris in my tree is Isaac Harris who was living in Publow, Somerset by 1803 and died there in 1832. His youngest son Cleopas (b 1813) moved to London and changed his name to John Cleopas Harris, his son Thomas Charles (b 1853) ended up in Northumberland where our branch of the family has been ever since.

    >From the Above Title -
    HERIZ

The firft mention I find of this Name, is in 18 H.2. [1172] under theTitle
of the Scutage of thofe Barons,
who did neither attend the King in Perfon into Ireland, upon hisExpedition
at that time thither, nor fent him
either Soldiers or Money for that Service: Where it appears, That therewas
iv l. then paid into the
Exchequer, for thofe Knights Fees which did belong to William de Heriz. For
    this neglect, I prefume, it
was, that the Lands of this William were (about this time) feifed into the
    King's hands: for in 20 H.2.
[1174] he gave C Mrks Fine, to be repoffefs'd of them again.
This William had his Refidence at Wyverton (now vulgarly called Wozton) in
    Com. Nott. and took to
    Wife Maude the Daughter of Raphe Lord Baffet of Drayton, in Staffordfhire;
    with whom he in
Frank-marriage, certain Lands in Wyndefclibe, of Six Marks per annumvalue:
    but died in 26 H.2. [1180]
or before, leaving Robert de Heriez his Brother and Heir, who then paid Cl.
    for Livery of his Inheritance:
Aeliva, another Wife, furving him, who gave C Marks to the King, that fhe
    might not be compelled to
marry any other than whom fhe her felf pleafed.
To this Robert fucceeded Ivo his son and Heir; who in King Richard the
    Firft's time, obtain'd a special
Charter from John Earl of Moreton (the King's Brother) to himfelf and his
Heirs for free liberty of Hunting
in all his Lands and Woods in Winefeld, in Com. Derb. with divers other
ample Privileges: And in 1 Joh.
[1199] gave ten marks of Silver to the King, for confirmation thereof.
In 16 Joh. [1215] this Ivo gave a Fine to the King of CCC l. for certain
Lands of Raffe Baffet. And about
the later end of King John's Reign, when thofe high Contests were betwixt
that King, and divers of the great
Barons, he adhered to them; for which caufe his Lands were feifed. Butupon
the coming of King Henry the
Third to the Crown, [1216] thofe Stirs being quieted, he return'd to hisdue
Allegiance, and had reftitution of them again.
To this Ivo (called alfo John) the King gave refpite until the Feaft of
Pentecoft, in that year for receiving
the Honour of Knighthood; and ftrict Command to the Sheriff of
Notinghamfhire, that he fhould not moleft
or trouble him for not receiving it at Eafter: But all that I have farther
feen of him, is, That he held
Winefeld, Lybhmes and Dicroft, for two Knights Fees; and died before 30H.3.
    [1246] leaving Sarra his
Wife furviving; who afterwards was married to Jollan de Nevill, a Perfonof
great Note in thofe days, being
    a Justice-Itinerant in that time.
To which John de Heriez fucceeded Henry, and to Henry, another John, as
    Brother and Heir. Which laft-
mention'd John died before 27 E.1. [1585] leaving John his Son and Heir, who
then doing his Homage, had Livery of his Inheritance.

THE HARRIS FAMILY PAPERS by Krentzman

The Harris family Papers by Krentzman gives the family seat as Weston
Hanges, Kent. There was a Manor
House at Westenhanger, near Hythe. He continues - Londric De Beaugency of
    Orleans, France was ancestor
to the powerful Barons of Beaugency and had two sons John and Hericeus, who
    lived around 996 to 1031
A.D. Hericeus had a son Ancelin de Beaumont who went to England and held a
    Barony in Nottingham
about 1086. Ancelin's son Ivo Fitz Herice or de Heris was Viscount of
    Nottingham before 1130 and his
sons were Ralph Hauseline, Robert Fitz Herice (executed by Henry II),
    Josseline, William (who held three
fiets in Nottingham and four in Lincoln), and Humphry. The French name
    Herice seems to have been
changed to Harris, by their sons who became increasingly more English. They
arrived in Essex early in the
16th Century, and spread themselves all over the Dengie Hundred. Their
influence was felt in all the
villages, especially at Mundon, The Friary, Maldon and at WoodhamMortimer.
    In Burnham they held
property interpreted as Troyforde and in Southminster, Rattleborough
(Ratsborough) 23 acres with 102 acres
of pasture called Sheepcote and Lodgelades and 128 acres of meadow called
    Highfield. Morant lists
Westwick Hall, Eastwick, Stokes, Luthymes, Shopland Hall, Cristell Hall,
    Cage, Iltney, Newhall, Woodham
Mortimer, in this area and in all some eighteen entries.

    And from another friend-

In discussing the colonial Harris haplogroup I stated that the Harris surname
arose from the French word heries, meaning hedgehog. This is totally wrong.
The French word for hedgehog is herisson (with an accent grave over the e), and
the only association with the Harris name is that the coat of arms of one
Harris bore three hedgehogs, presumably a visual pun on his surname. Someone
mentioned that the name Harris means "son of Harry," and that is, indeed, what I
find on several web sites. Most of those sites are in the business of selling
bogus merchandise, such as copies of the "Harris coat of arms," which of course
does not exist, so I am not sure how much they can be trusted. In any case,
the Harris name appears to have originated with Normans who followed William
the Conqueror to Britain after 1066, before surnames became common in Britain.
Two possible lines of Norman ancestors have been identified by J. Mortimer
Seaver and summarized by Robert E. Harris in his book From Essex England to the
Sunny Southern USA: A Harris Family Journey (1994; published by the author). One
of these lines begins with Landric de Beaugency, who was alive in 1028 in the
Orleanois region southwest of Paris. He had a son named Hericeus or Herice,
who had a son named Ancelin de Beaumont. By 1086 this Ancelin held a large
barony in Nottingham, England. Ancelin had a son named Ivo Fitz Herice or de
Heris, who was Viscount of Nottingham before 1130. One of his sons,
Humphrey-Humphrey Harris, seems to have been the first to use the modern spelling. The second
possible origin of the English Harrises may have been a Ralph Heris from
    Normandy, France.

At a stand still with our Harris line. I have a John Harris b.1843 in North Carolina d:?, he had a son William P. Harris b.1862 in Virginia d.? William married Sarah Ellen Johnson b.1868 in Virginia. Their son was Walter Harris b.1896 in Brunswick, Virginia d.1976 he married Eunice Estel Wray......
I know Harris is a common name, but it is belived one of the these Harris men were at least half Maherin Indian, no one knows if it came from the Harris line or if they married a Maherin woman. But I don't know where they orginated from in NC and only know where they ended up.

according to Miss Clara C. Harris, the family historian, of Concord North Carolina, are descendants of a certain Robert Harris who married Dorothy Wiley, who had the following children: 1. John Harris m. (1) Grizzel Steele (2) Rebecca McBay. 2. William Harris m. Elizabeth Glenn 3. James Harris m. Mary McIlhenny 4. Margaret Harris m. Alexander Poer 5. Thomas Harris m. (1) Mary McKinney (2) Agnes 6. Samuel Harris m. Martha Laird 7. Robert Harris m. Frances Cunningham (2) Ann Harris Caldwell 8. Charles Harris . (1) Jane McIlhenny (2) Elizabeth (Thomson) Baker Miss Harris says these brothers came from Pennsylvania to Mecklenburg County, N.C. about 1750, all except brother William Harris, who stopped in Cecil County, Maryland, where he and his descendants remained. She is a descendant of James Harris and his wife Mary McIlhenny, through his oldest son Robert, who married Margaret Harper (b. 1737), who had a son Hezekiah Price Harris (1800-1869), whose son Richard Sadler Harris (1835-1911) had Wade Hampton Harris (1858-1935) who married Cora Springs. Col. Robert Harris is listed in "Harris Ancestors," NCHarris.AOL as a son of Robert Harris and Dorothy Wylie, born in Donegal Co., Ireland abt 1714. (Rev. War)(DAR #64977). His will is dated 25 Jan 1798. He is described as "of Reedy Creek." Dates of birth and death obtained from World Family Tree, Vol 1., as b. 1714, d. 1796.

Ancestors & Desc. of Robert Harris Sr. 1702-1788 by Mary Harris Staratton has Caldwell info.
It is speculated that Ann Harris was the daughter of James Harris and his first wife, Mary Simpson, before they came to America between 1740/1747, and it is felt that she and her husband, David Caldwell, must have lived there or close by (Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland). Her grandfather was Edward Harris who married Flora Douglas. She is descended from a long line of Harris' that are traced to the 1000s. The citation I have on this is: "Isaac Harris of Havana", published in 1938. From Dorothy Alford

At his death, her husband, David Caldwell, bequeathed to her all household furniture, 2 cows and her horse and saddle as well as her bed as well as two negroes Nightingale and Emmy

Note: According to research conducted by Isaac Harris of Havana, Cuba published in 1938, this was the father of James Harris, b. 1660 in Ireland and d. abt. 1726 in Pennsylvania. This Edward Harris was of Glenmarquin and was a Ruling Elder of the Raphoe Presbyterian Church. A chart included in the book, ?Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Harris, Sr.? by Mary Harris Stratton (1967) the Harris line is carried back through the centuries and purports the Harris line to descend from most of the crowned heads of Europe, and to Charlemagne, Emperor of the West who died around 814 A.D. Kings included in this lineage are: Robert the Bruce of Scotland; David, King of Scotland; Malcolm Cannamore, King of Scotland; Alfred the Great, King of England; William the Conqueror of England; and many of the Magna Charta Barons, who at Runnemede in 1215 forced King John of England to sign that famous document which laid the foundation for parliamentary government. This lineage, as is usually the case when more than one genealogist get together, is questioned by some. The author has not researched it extensively to determine its authenticity you might do so. Some genealogists feel that this Harris line was at one time located in the Vendosime Region of France, possibly bearing the Gallic name of Heriz. Another excellent source of material on the Harris (Herries, Harries, Heriz, etc.) line is the book: ?Harris, Dunlop, Valentine, and Allied Families? by William M. Mervine, a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. This book was printed in 1920 and is in the Library of Congress and other libraries. It is a good study of the Harris Family and contains a great deal of documentation and historical data. Source: Ancestors and descendants of Robert Harris, Jr. by Mary Harris Stratton (1967)

This is the second page of I.L. Harris dated Jan. 12, 1930 That portion of the Harris family that settle in the Southern colonies had its origin in Wales. From there they went to France and became allied to the great family of Vendosine, prior to the Norman Conquest. Members of the family returned to Great Britain, and became prominent after the Conquest: and from the armorial bearing of the various brances, particularly the three Herrious, we are assured of a common origin for the Wiltshire and Ayrshire Harrises. Of the Wiltshire Harrieses were the Earls of Malmsbury. From here came the Harrises of Virginia and Maryland. From the Yorkshire branch came the settlers who founded Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. A third branch went to Scotland before the reign of Alexander II. about 1150, and became leaders in teh struggles that terminated in the struggles with the winning of independence under Robert Bruce. The fifth in line of succession was created Baron Terrigles, and the sixth Baron was created Lord Harries--a title still existing in the nobility of Great Britain. They lives in Ayrshire, where the third Baron Terrigles married a daughter of Archibald, fifth Earl of Angus--celebrated in Scott's "Marmion". She was a sister of Janet, who married his brother, the second Lord Harries, and from this couple Roger and Miss Douglas, are descended the Scotch-Irish Harrises of the U.S. Edward Harris, born about 1620, was the ruling elder of Glenmarguin, near Raphoe, county donegal, Ireland, and married also into the Douglas family in the person of Flora Douglas. They left three sons, Edward, Robert and James. This was the third intermarriage between the Harrises and Douglases--the first about 1410, the second about 1520, and the third about 1650. COME TO U.S. One branch of family to Pennsylvania. Edward had two sons and a daughter. Robert had seven sons and a daughter; James had four sons. All immigrated to Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, early in the eighteenth century. Robert, whose wife was Dorothy Wylie died in sight of land, and was buried in Philadelphia, Pa. His seven sons settled in Lancaster, and bought land from Thomas Penn in 1737 and subsequently. Thomas had married Mary McKinney and remained in Pennsylvania. He was a captain in a militia company in 1748, died in 1801. aged 106. William had married Elizabeth Glen and moved to Creil(?) County Maryland, with family of 14 children. The other five sons of Robert--John, James, Robert, Charles and Samuel--about 1750 to 1755, moved to Mecklenburg county, North Carolina (now Cabarrus County) and settled on Rocky River. John later moved to Blount County, Tenn., with eight children. His brothers remained in Mecklenburg and reared large families. From them are descended the Harrieses known throughout the South as the Scotch-Irish Harrises of Mecklenburg, and who scattered throughout the land, pioneering as each generation pushed out into the wilderness, looking for new fields to develop.
lived in Ayrshire prior to moving, sometime between 1640-1660, to Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland. Dan Brown

Hi, I am 5th grt grandson of Thomas Harris and Mary McKinney, mentioned by Katheryn on October 19th. Msg me if you are related and would like to correspond. One thing I am working on is to find the gravesite of Sutia Harris who died October 2, 1813 in Philadelphia. She was the wife of Thomas Harris's son Matthew. If anyone is good with gravesites in that area and can help I would appreciate it. Cheers, Evan

In the Harris field there is, or was (25 years ago) one row of tombstones left unplowed; one, half the height of others, as if broken and replanted, but it is not; it is just deeper hideing the Old German writing below. A local genealogist in her book dismissed it as, some old German verse. What is said is proximately; Now she is with Gott, the same Gott who will punish me if I am responsible for her death, but if I am not, surely Gott will not harm me". What is the meaning of this hidden, lost message?

Was Henry Miller's mother's maiden name a German, "Haro" (or Harro)? My Henry does not seem to be the Henry Miller, the son of Lt. Wendel Miller.

I descend Henry Miller's second wife, the widow of War of 1812, Pvt. John Sossaman and daughter of DAR Patriot, Capt. Frederick Fisher by first wife Sybilla (most DARs descend second wife Ann McBride), Mrs. Emelia 'Milly" Fisher Sossaman. Henry ran the old Sossaman-Miller-Foil Miller on Dutch Buffalo Creek untill his Sossamon step-children came of age. On the bridge below the Mt. Pleasant waterworks dam, look downstream perhaps 200 to 300 yards on the right bank and in the water, you could see some remaining foundation. The three millstones, removed atop the bank perhaps another 100 yards downstream. The grist mill may have become a fleece fullering mill?

With the circa 1920's advent of electricity, it was removed to Mt. Pleasant and under another name, ungoing untill the 1970's when I was last there (retired Charlotte as a Piedmont Airlines/US Airways mechanic). On an earlier visit I espied on a grain hopper, seemingly in pencil with early 1900's date, that the writer had just observed a named pilot aloft, then being "the first man to ever fly over Cabarrus County"; I wrote the name and quote (above from poor memory) down and lost it. Before retirement to the Carolina coast, I went back for the data to see if the pilot was ever FAA licensed.

Alas the owner said that bin was in his barn (late Concord pharmacist Thom Moose's familie's 1830's Pennsylvania Connastoga? wagon from Penn. to Cabarrus Co. was in a barn and now in the N.C. Museum of Transportation, Spencer. Perhaps the grain with early aviation inscription should be there too, with it). Who was this first pilot?

Henry's second wife had Frederick Haro Miller to the Republic of Texas, Samuel D. Miller fate unknown, Alexander 'Sandy' Monroe Miller to Rowan Co., N.C., thence Illinois, and my John Cyrus Miller (1811-1893), wed Sophie Propst, to Zeb/Franklin, old Mocksville Rd., Rowan Co., N.C.

I'd love to know more about my Cabarrus Co., N.C., Euphrain Drake Harris kin.

Hit that "Friend Request" button then lost private e-mail link to you. Computers drive me nuts. Thank you for your Ephraim Drake Harris response; and note: I can't spell. I live up the road from you off Long Beach Road (to Oak Island) near Southport. Ephrain's 1816 possible wil?. Does he mention his Ridenhour grandchildren or former son-in-law Henry Miller, even if negatively; or anything about Henry Miller's wife, Ephrain's daughter Barbarah Miller, especially her death? Jim P.S. Your Bennets. I descend Bute/Warren Cos, N.C., Malone's Mill Creek, Rev. War Ens. Wood Malone who served under Capt Bennett Wood; later Baptist Rev. Bennet Wood who removed to north Georgia to preach to the Indians. Wood Malone's widow Barsheba wed Wm. Noyal Norswothy. Son Thomas Malone, Sr., land clerk Raleigh, circa 1803 or 1805 (Alabama Biography) with slaves via Indian country, removed to Ft. St. Stephens, Ala., as US Land Office agent, US magistrate, Asst. US Indiam agent, and with Lt. Gaines helped arrest Arron Burr. His wife was Mary S. Malone, maiden name unknown. Seemingly Bennet Wood may have been Wood Malone's kin. His father was John Malone of Malones Bridge, Dinwiddie Co., Va., and perhaps a mile up-stream, Malone's Crossing (ford). Possibly his wife was a Wood or Bennet? The home of 1600's Gen. Abraham Wood still stands, perhaps two to five miles away.

I have been reading with interest all the comments on the origins of the name Harris. There have been several mentions of French/Norman names & Scottish nobility from various books, but has anyone actually traced their family back to these origins? I am having trouble getting our line back past the coalminer Hugh Harris born circa 1770 in Kirkconnel, Dumfries. Coalminers were vertual slaves, owned by the mine owners, which is a long way from lords and land owners in those books. The documentation in the 19th century is very good, with the Scottish certificates giving valuable information, Any suggestions on how to proceed backwards gratefully received.

I can trace my Harris line to Robert Harris (1787-1865) of Juniata County, PA. His father was probably John, who died in Juniata County (then Mifflin County) ca 1805, and supposedly had a son, Robert.. John lived near Captain Thomas Harris, whose brother was William of Harford County, MD. I believe William's and Captain Thomas's father was Robert, son of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas. I would like to make the definite connection between my ancestor, Robert, and the Edward Harris line..
  • Ricky Harris

John, I can also trace my ancestry back to the PA Harris. See my forum called The Pennsylvania Harrises. Also, would you please email me at rick.harris09@gmail.com

In the early 1950's at Whitaker Elementary School, Winston-Salem, N.C., my fellow classmate was Nicky Harris; with the shocking death of his father, I came to know the difficulties that he (and another sibling I think), and his mother had lived under. With my enlightenment, my heart then went out to Nicky and his mother.  It's true over the last half century, I might not think of Nicky and his once situation each year, but there also have been many years, I have remembered. If anyone by slight chance knows Nicky Harris, tell him his once classmate Jim (also known as Al) Miller has not forgotten (now of Southport, N.C.) and hopes he and his mom are healthy, healed survivors.

I am seeking descendants of Peter Harris and Cindia Harris.   In Brunswick County VA around 1900.  Their children were: Joseph, Maude, Junius, Ned, James, Henrietta, Bessie, Carrie, Rosa, Ruth, Sydnor, and Polly.  Peter died in 1916 from an injury. They are both buried in the Good Hope Baptist Church cemetery in the Blackridge area of Brunswick County.  Junius was my father.

I am seeking information on Henry H. Harris, born 1865 Darlington Co, SC: died 10 Apr 1935, buried at the Cypress Cemetery, Cypress Crossroads, Lee County, South Carolina.  His mother was Amanda Jackson.  I believe his father was Henry Harris, a slave owner.  Amanda Jackson was one of his slaves.

I am trying to find the slave owner, Henry Harris, in a cemetery, or a death record, or something else about him.  I'm trying to get behind that Harris line.

Does anyone have access to Darlington and Lee County, SC records?

Hello Harris researchers! Does anyone have any info on Samuel Harris, born in NH around 1777?  He married Sarah (Sally) Holmes. He's the last person in my Harris line.  He was a Jr., but I haven't been able to find his father.  Obituaries say the family was of Scots-Irish descent and started off in MA.  This line of Harris's went from NH to NY to MI.

We're in group 22 of the Harris DNA Project, matching up with a Bryan Harris b 1800 in Canada and a William Harris b 1798 in Wayne Co PA.

Hello all, I am researching my Harris line and have hit a brick wall. I have gotten as far back as Kimbrell Harris born 1813 in TN (not exactly sure where). He was residing in Smith Co. Tn in 1838 I know for sure. He married Prudence James and they traveled to Phillips Co. AR. Prudence died and Kimbrell remarried. Kimbrell had a sister Fannie and Martha that both married a John Hutches. I beleve that he also had a brother named George W. Harris.

Kimbrell's parents are shown on the census to have been born in NC. Looking at tax records from Smith Co. TN, I have found a John and Mary Harris living in an area close to the James Family. Kimbrell's first son was named John Alexander. I believe John from his Grandpa Harris and Alexander from his Grandpa James.

If anyone has any leads for me to follow, it sure would be appreciated. I have not done the DNA thing yet but plan on it soon. Again any info is appreciated.

Hi all!  I belong to Stephen Harris (1795, Georgia) and Phebe Hawkins (1798, Georgia).  That's where I'm stuck.  Our Harris', as far back as I can go, were from Georgia before the Civil War but then about the time Hilliard Harris served (1862) in the Arkansas militia, the family settled in Bradly County, Arkansas.  My grandfather was the first to move to Louisiana and settled in Calcasieu Parish.

Just discovered this forum. I also have a PA Harris - Samuel Harris married to Elizabeth Slicer, Only thing in his family Bible was that he was born 1 March 1808 in PA, ( we suspect Chester Co and possibly that he was Quaker) Married Elizabeth 24 January 1833 and had four of his 7 children in PE John Thomas, Joseph, Mary Elizabeth, William Henry and the other three in Cecil CO MD -Sabina, Deborah Kirk, and Caroline. He and his wife are buried in Brick School House , Calvert MD, Quaker cemetery. I am looking for any information as to his parents, where born, where married and the birth of his children in PA. I have a detailed account of his family up to my birth and my Mom Helen Harris. Hope to help anyone completing his family tree! Thanks!

    Hello all,
I am searching for a family connection between the Harris Family of Pa and Conn. I am descended from the Thomas Harris(1655-1697) that married Ruth James in 1680. Many people have him mistakenly identified as the son of Daniel Harris and Mary Weld of Ma. This is not correct. At this point his parents have not been proven but clues are pointing to the fact that he was orphaned at a young age and had a brother named Walter.
His son, Nathaniel Harris(1693-1775) of Cumberland , NJ, married as his 2nd wife. a young woman named Elizabeth Harris (maiden Name) (1697-1773) in 1722.  ELIZABETH HARRIS is reported to be Nathaniel's 3rd Cousin and descended from JOHN HARRIS of Pa.
If this is true then these 2 families are linked and the great mystery of Thomas' heritage and that of all his descendents may be closer to being solved.
I have been searching for the parents of this Elizabeth Harris of Pa. I am hoping one of you may know of her and be able to help me. I found recorded on someone family tree that they were a John Harris and Elizabeth Rowe...but i can't find an Elizabeth Rowe either.
     Thank you for your time.

Hi,  I'm a new member today.  I'm descended from Robert Harris 1695 York Co. VA and his wife Mary Starke.  This line goes to/through George Fuller Harris, illegitimate son of William Fuller (son of George Fuller) and Mary Harris.  Is anyone else searching this line?
