Teresa, I'm researching the Higgins surname from Illinois as well. Mine is William Higgins who married Spicie Bird and they moved to Texas. His son Blackston Cicero Higgins changed his surname to Huggins. I was told that the Higgins in the family were an outlaw gang who changed their name to Huggins. My great great aunt has newspaper articles re: the Higgins gang, but someone else got them when she passed, so I've never seen them. My dad was told stories of all this by her. Does any of this or these people sound familiar to you?
My ancestors came to Massac Co. in1845 and got land grants. My surnames are Helmantoler, Gurley and Yandell. I taught at So. Illinois University near Massac and got a lot of information.
I received your message by email, but cannot find it here at Genealogywise! (Copied below.)
Two thoughts: I don't quite understand why exactly Nancy Bradley Vance could not be Hiram's mother. And, given that your new information seems sort of dicey, do you have Hiram and his family in the 1860 census? If Hiram died after 1865, you might find him in the state census of that year.

My g. grandfather, Hiram Vance who was born in Pendleton County, WV, followed several of his sons
and his brother Robert's children to Illinois in 1861 after his wife Phoebe Skidmore Vance died.
Hiram died in Illinois and is buried in Johnson Cemetery, DeWitt County, near Clinton IL. Recent
info indicates that his mother Nancy Vance went with him but I can find no record of her death in
Illinois. This info indicates that her name was Nancy Bradley Vance but I don't think so since a
Nancy Bradley Vance with the same set of parents as given in this info married a Joseph Vance. This
Nancy is buried in Arcadia Cemetery near Jacksonville, Morgan County ILL. Her husband Joseph is
buried in Liberty Cemetery in McDonough County, ILL Blandsville Township. Her stone says she died
14 February 1857, wife of Joseph Vance.
These sons of Hiram and Phoebe moved to ILL around the beginning of the Civil War: Elias Vance,
Bell Flower, McLean County, Levi Vance who lived at LeRoy, McLean Co, Rutledge, DeWitt Co., Perry
Vance, LeRoy, McLean Co., Hiram Vance, Jr.,no info, and possibly a daughter Elizabeth and a
daughter, Nancy who married (1) Reece Ballah (2) James Morse.
Any suggestions as to how to locate the death of my ggg grandmother Nancy Vance, who according to
undocumented info died 14 Feb. 1857, in Morgan County, Illinois, but since this is the same death
date as the Nancy Bradley Vance that married Joseph Vance, it can't be right? Do you know any
Vances?
Both my husband and I have Illinois relatives. Some of our Chicago surnames are Trogg, Etscheid, Dorgan, Mundt, Buchholtz & Wilkowski
If anyone has a connection to the Eastland disaste, let me know. I have many photos and a casualty list.
I don't know why it didn't appear here. I will have to admit that I am a lttle confused by this site. I am not sure if you post your comment on one of the group sites if it appears only there on one the main page also....Oh well, I'll figure it out. Is there a Help tab on Genealogy Wise? II just found this site yesterday and am trying to get ready for a family reunion tomorrow in WV, so I am a little bit stressed. But you know how we genealogy nuts are, even with all
my food preparation for the reunion, I am taking a break to check my email.
Hiram Vance was the son of John Vance and Nancy ? a lot of people on the internet and a lady by the name of Carmen Bussard contacted me years ago and we determined that her ancestor, Joseph Vance was married to Nancy Bradley Vance. She has written a book about Joseph, I believe. Joseph and Nancy do not have a son named Hiram; they are not his parents.
According to this new info Alexander Vance and Susannah Sowege (Gliding Swan) Castle Vance had triplets born 10 January 1763 named John, Josepyh and James. The Joseph Vance married to Nancy Bradley was born 10 February 1753. I do not know when my John was born for sure but the
carving on his stone, located in a field in WV, says he was deceased Feb. 8, 1826, age 82 which would make him born ca 1744, so they don't seem to be two of the triplets.
Hiram died May 3, 1876 and is buried in DeWitt County, Illinois. However, he is listed in Pendleton County WV on the 1870 census living with his son Perry. He was supposed to have gone to Illinois in 1861 along with his mother Nancy whoever Vance, but apparently he came back to WV then went back to Illinois. His wife Phoebe Skidmore Vance is buried in WV. My biggest quest is finding out what my Nancy's maiden name was, even though it is listed as Bradley on
several sites, somehow I can't accept that. I have almost come to the conclusion that there were two John Vances in Pendleton County/Virginia, later
WV and their records have gotten mixed up.
Bonnie -- I'm puzzled too but maybe this will work! Seems to me that you are on the right track in being skeptical. It doesn't matter how many sites say that Hiram's mother's maiden name was Bradley -- what matters is what *evidence* they offer for its being true (and I don't mean that someone put it in a book!). Unless somebody has really documented this, my own inclination would be to work on John Vance. For instance, did he own land anywhere? Who did he buy it from? sell it to? Who did he live nearby to? Was he a church member? Do any of his regular associates have a sister of the right age named Nancy? If some of them do, did she marry someone else? This looks like it might be that sort of case, built out of little tiny clues -- but you will have a better idea. Meanwhile, enjoy the reunion!
I am researching families in Putnam Co., Illinois --- Patrick Cosgrove and wife Maria Regan or Ragan. There are no Putnam Co., Illinois marriages on the Illinois State Archives database of marriages. In addition, when I was recently in Salt Lake City at the library, I found very little on Putnam County ... no filmed marriages or marriage extractions in book form. Has anybody retrieved Putnam Co. marriages by writing to the courthouse? Other suggestions for Putnam Co. research?
I research mainly in Randolph, Union, Jackson, and St Clair Counties, with particular emphasis on The French Negroes of Illinois. For the past editions of the ongoing series, look here.
Hi everyone, hope someone can help. I am trying to find a copy of the 1943 yearbook from Wooddale High School. My mom Grace Schubnell graduated from there. I have a photo of her that appears to be taken around that time and want to see if I can identify the guy in the photo. If anyone has a copy I can email a copy of the photo and maybe you would be so kind as to look and see if you can find the guy? Also looking for a picture of Bob Anderson who was in the same graduating class. Thanks for any help. Vicki
Bonnie - I don't think you are going to find Nancy's maiden name in Illinois. I don't see anything Hiram did where his mother's maiden name would come up. The earliest death certificate in DeWitt is 1878.
I don't see how to reply directly to a comment. This is directed at
Ruby Coleman. Have you looked at http://genealogytrails.com/ill/putnam/ and http://www.myillinoisgenealogy.com/il_county/put.htm as well as checking on Putnam county records in the Family History Library on Family Search?
Thanks Frances for your Putnam Co., IL suggestions. I have tried the Family History Library to no avail ... was in Salt Lake City in May. I'll check out those web pages.
I'm hoping to find information on James and Martha Allison of Fulton County. All I know is that they were married in Fulton County in 1863 and they owned land in (I think) Joshua Township. I am also searching out the Carrison and Kerr families from the same area.
My mother's family all lived for ages in southern Illinois. She grew up in Belleville on 78th Street. Her family lived in places like Hecker and Madonnaville. They were all farmers. Surnames include Griffin, Buncher (Bonchur), Kraft, Eschmann, and Harbaugh. If you have a connection, please give me a shout!
Some of my father's family also passed through IL. My grandmother, Ruth Kahly, was born in Cedarville, Stephenson County. My great-grandmother, Ida Santee, was also born in IL before the family relocated to Fairmont, MN. If you have info, please contact me!
Can I suggest adding the "Discussion" module to this group? As time progresses it's going to become more difficult to follow discussions, and reply to queries, in this comment thread.
