This is the best genealogy data-base program I've ever used, and hope they keep improving it. I'll try to contribute as much as time allows. I've tough classes on Legacy, and will do a 12 week class in basic genealogy for the Renaissance Society at Sacramento State University.
I am new to Legacy and so far looks like a great program. I have been using
FTM so am trying to correct some information before puting it in to Legacy.
Wow, lots of erros in my FTM should I clean them up first?
Barb
Hi Barbara, I too started with FTM some years ago, tried another one a bit more sophisticated and ended with Legacy about five years ago. Most users seem pretty happy with it and are very supportive, as is the Millenia team. I want it to help organize my research data and most importantly, a ton of sources and notes. It does a good job of it.
Since you recognize that your FTM data may need some cleaning up, I would suggest doing as much of that as possible before transferring over. You will probably have to go thru a GEDCOM file translation to make the move, so it's best to do that with "clean" data.
I would also suggest reviewing the comments on the Legacy Users Group (LUG) archives on the Millenia website concerning making the data transfer,.cleaning it up and entering events and source data.
Good luck and enjoy Legacy.

Hi All. I am a new user of Legacy. I began with FTM about 6 years ago and then switched to The Master Genealogist which I have used for about 5 years. I was reasonably happy with it but when it was time for an upgrade I decided to try Legacy and so far I am quite happy with it. I bought the training DVDs and I think they are very good.
Hi all.
I've been a Legacy fan since version 3, I have found it to be a very user friendly program and more than that I have found the Millenia team most helpful and very quick to respond to both questions and problems. Though i have not had any problems with such a brilliant program.
Keep up the good work guy's and gal's.
Great program! In my opinion, Legacy exceeds all the other programs I've used in terms of abilities, user-friendliness, ease of learning, and support. I'm also enjoying the Personal Historian program!
I've had the program for about a year, and I'm almost finished with a narrative history of my father's side of the family. Next project is Mom's side! The program works much like a basic word processor, but with extra benefits that help organize your work, provide timelines, etc. The only criticism I might have is a desire for more word processing features like tabbing. Otherwise, I've enjoyed working with it.
I was doing genealogy on-line but I switched to Legacy last year and now I can check to clean up my data and when it is all complete then I can post to the internet or create GEDCOM's to send to other family researchers. I really like the program and encourage others to use it.
Several years ago and many program versions in the past, I noticed a "bug" that has never been resolved because most deny it exists. At the time, others on the Legacy User Group, also said they did not experience the problem.
Step-by-Step to recreate the "bug":
1. Select the Name List from the Family tab view.
2. Within the Name List view, select the Family tab at the right.
3. Next, within the Name List view on the left, select an individual whose family member cause the scroll bar to appear on the right side of the Family tab view.
4. Within the Family tab view on the right, select an individual and attempt to scroll the the list of family members using your mouse's scroll wheel, if it has one.
5. I cannot scroll up or down within list of family member using my mouse's scroll wheel.
6. The mouse used years ago was a Logitech model on a different PC than the one currently in use. The current mouse is a HP model on an HP PC.
If anyone on the Group can recreate this "bug" as described, please post your response comments with the Group forum..
I just joined GW today and checked the Lagecy Group where I found there is a new version 7.0.0.97, so I downloaded it (I downloaded it 3 times) every time I start Legacy after loading the new version I get the following messages:
"The Message File Record #13252 was not found"
"The Message File Record #13268 was not found"
"The Message File Record #13240 was not found"
Does anyone know how I can resolve this?
After I click OK on these three message I can load my data file and things seems to be find. Next time I open Legacy I have the same three messages, which I have to click OK and than load my data file...........
I am using Windows Visa, Home addition. Any help would be appreciated.
Comment to Donald DeZarn - following your instructions my system scrolls up and down the 'Name' List not the 'Immediate Relative' List. I suspect that it is a programming bug and the "focus" for the scroll action has not been set to the correct list.
I was a long time user of Family Tree Maker until I tried Legacy's free Version. Just from the free version I was hooked! I have never regretted the change.
I finally, able to get a good download and update. Everything seems to be working fine now. You never know how much you are going to miss a program until something does not work correctly.......... Thank God for Legacy..
To those who responded to the Scroll Wheel bug I posted last night, thank you very much for confirming its existence.
I just submitted a bug report to Legacy, and I cited the responses on the group forum.
Like others, I started out with FTM but became unhappy with it. I have now switched to Legacy. There is clean up to be done but I really appreciate the ease with which Legacy allows you to source and document your material.
I have a couple of Gay cousins, and I'm sure Gay ancestors, I tried to add my male cousins partner's name as his - well - partner, and Legacy wouldn't let me do a same sex couple, I reported what I thought was a bug but got a response back that to allow same sex couples is just too difficult to do! Apart from this, yes I love legacy and would never change, unless I could find a programme that could do this, how do I tell my cousin his Partner doesn't count?
I have been a user of Legacy for some years now as I had to buy a new programme as my old one was purchased by Ancestry and discontinued. It is called UFT- Uultimate Family Tree. Some of you might recall it I still use it without any problems but sadly iut hasnt moved on. I find Legacy a great programme, incredibily easy to use. I have never had it crash on me or had any problem. Thank you millenia
Hi,
Right now I have Family Tree Maker and I downloaded the Legacy. I like the toolbar in Legacy. But you can by the books for FTM at the bookstore. Which one is better or are they about the same, etc. If I do go with Legacy, is it better to go with the free one or should I upgrade. I also have taken a Beginner Class on Genealoy at the locate LDS Church it was so good I took it 3 times already and since they don't have an advance I will take it again. Anyway they use PAF, I not to crazy about that one. I don't want the LDS members to make my relatives Mormons unless those relatives say so.
Any advice would be helpful. Thank you
