Hello. Very happy to join the Genealogy Wise Group. I have used Legacy and PAF for many years. Legacy, I believe, is the best genealogy program--with all of its wonderful tools--available. PAF, a great basic program, as we know, is designed for all computers all over the world--a gift from the LDS Church. I have always been impressed by the great courtesy and help from the Legacy staff. Good to be here.
  • Joseph M. Reed

Dear Margi Peoples, I have just read your comment. I wouldn't worry about the LDS Church making your ancestors members of the Church. Your ancestors will have their freedom to decide whether or not to become members. The Church cannot force them to become members. Your question about purchasing the Legacy up-grade is a good one. I think that, for the small cost of up-grading, you will then be able to enjoy the additional tools and be very pleased to have done so.
  • Barbara Krecklow

Margi, As an ex FTM (Family Tree Maker) user and now a long time Legacy user, I can recommend Legacy. I also would recommend the Deluxe version. If you go to the home page you can not only download Legacy, but you can purchase a user guide that is very helpful. You can also purchase tutorials that answer many questions. Good Luck. Barb

I use Legacy 5 deluxe still. That is mainly because I haven't found a UK supplier and I begrudge the import tax of double the cost of the cd. Particularly if there is little difference between Legacy 5 and Legacy 7.
    Is there a UK supplier?
  • Ross James Stacey

    Hi Victoria,
If you download the program instead of importing the Cd would you still have to pay the import tax?.
  • Victoria Turner

I probably can download from Legacy and not pay import tax, but I prefer to have a cd so that I can reload direct in case anything goes wrong in the future.
  • Victoria Turner

Addenda to my last message. I can only download the standard version 7 or upgrade from Legacy 6 as far as I can see. I have Legacy 5.
  • Ross James Stacey

    Hi victoria,
You can download and burn to your own CD. Yes you will download free version. Then you will have to purchase serial no. to upgrade to deluxe version.
  • Eric March

Victoria, why do you have to pay Import Duty. I also live in the UK and had version 7 CD + Training CD's supplied without paying any extra duty. I bought them direct from Lagacy and paid in US$.
  • Bernard Doddema, Jr.

Is there a way that the Legacy classes will be made available for DVD? I'm disabled and there's way that I could attend these wonderful classes. I'm especially interested in learning about the newFamilySearch integration.
  • Victoria Turner

In short, Eric. When I bought the Legacy 5 deluxe package by credit card direcat from Millenia several years ago I had import tax and excess to pay to the Post Office before they would deliver it.
  • Geoff Rasmussen

Bernard, one of the Legacy classes is actually available online at www.legacyfamilytree.com/videos.asp. Just click on the View Now button for the "Legacy Family Tree: an Overview" seminar. Once we officially release the new FamilySearch tools, we will also publish online videos specific to it.

i love legacy. i switch from ftm several years ago and love the layout for legacy.
  • John Taplin

I switched from Brothers Keeper about 8 years ago to Legacy V3 free version then moved up to free version V5 when it came on and now running Deluxe V7.
I am in New Zealand and all have been down loaded from the Legacy site.
  • Karen A Hickman

I use Legacy deluxe 7 I find it great & easy to use I am putting photos in & then I want to make a cd of it all
  • Bob Rowe

Hi Geoff, I am so pleased to be part of your group. I started using Legacy at version 5, I think. I 'sell' it every where I go and even became an affiliate. I was one of thousands who couldn't wait for the v7 upgrade. I love Legacy!

Help please: at some point Legacy changed the location of some of my pictures to an erroneous sub-directory. Let me explain, each person in my database has their own directory named after their RIN number. The base directory is D:\Catudal\People directory. I for instance would be D:\Catudal\People\41 because my RIN is 41. For people with an RIN from 1 to 2899 their photos exit at the base directory of D:\Catudal\People; people with an RIN of 2900 to 4999 reside on the sub-directory off of the base in a sub-directory entitled D:\Catudal\People\2900 to 4999 and so on. Yesterday I backed-up the Media Files (something I don't do often) and it said to check the file locations of some of the media as they did not match. I was surprised to see that Legacy has a link location for about 200 photos as "D:\Catudal\People\2900 to 5000". I have never had a directory with that name. So my question is, is there a way that I can reset those photos with the wrong sub-directory name to the correct sub-directory name? Also, I would be very interested to find out how Legacy could have gotten the wrong name. I know it seems more than likely that I messed up somehow but I don't know how. Please someone help as having to change all of those photo locations manually would be painful. Thank you.
  • Carolyn Winterburn

    Hi,
First let me thank you for your answer to my previous question.
Now I have a problem. I had put the wrong name for a father and had put in notes for him. When I discovered my mistake I edited the name and birth date. When I previewed the report for the family it still contained the notes for the previous person. They are not in the notes of the amended person. Where can I find them to delete them.
    Please help.

  • James G Hunter

I'm ex brothers Keeper, but found Legacy several years ago, now belong to the
Auckland NZ LUG, Legacy's so user friendly.
  • Victoria Turner

I have now found a British supplier of Legacy 7 deluxe and have just ordered the deluxe version. S&N Supplies have it for £41 AND they accept debit cards. I was using Legacy 5 deluxe but downloaded the standard 7 but could not get on without some of the features of deluxe that I had become accustomed to using.

Anyone got any ideas for using the Version 6 CDs? I purchased 4 of them and cannot get them to run on my computer.
  • Ron Ferguson

    Hi David,

Remember that Maestro is a European Debit card and not American. Whilst I understand that most American ATMs will accept Maestro I have yet to find a non-European on line company that will. In particular I do buy a lot of computer stuff from the USA and have never been able to use it.

In fact, I used to pay my Ancestry.co.uk account by Maestro and they asked me to change to a credit card "because the rules had changed and they could no longer accept Maestro". I don't really believe this, but I suspect that Maestro increased their charges!

  • Ron Ferguson

    David,

I should have added that one way round your problem would be to buy a prepaid Visa or Master Card. Having never used them I don't know where you can get them from but I believe they are widely available - Google should help.

Thanks for the free Legacy 7 for having completed the cross word puzzle. Good luck on all your work this week. You will be busy!
  • Victoria

For Brenda Wheeler having a problem with CDs - Can you give more information? How did you try to play them? How old is your computer and what operating system does it run? Just out of curiosity, when and where did you get four version 6 CDs since the ones currently for sale are version 7 and the introductory set has six?

The CDs have a player on them which is designed to open when the CD is read by your drive. I've tried both my desktop and laptop (Vista 64 bit and 32 bit respectively) with my version 7 CDs and they open automatically on my laptop. Autoplay is disabled (intentionally) on my desktop, but the player started when I double clicked on the application on the CD in Windows Explorer.

I teach Computer Genealogy both at my genealogy society and an adult student program through the University. Since I have frequently advised my students to use the Legacy CDs, I'm concerned that you are having a problem with them. My students are often very new to computers and I thought the Legacy CDs were easy enough for anyone to use.

Hope we can quickly solve your problems so you can learn more about Legacy.
  • Brenda Wheeler, PLCGS

    Hi Victoria
My computer is a Toshiba running XP, and I got the CDs from Gould Genealogy here in Australia, who had them on sale separately. I was expecting just to be able to put them in my CD/DVD drive and just play them, but the drive does not even recognise that there is a CD in. I have no problems normally playing any CDs or DVDs. I have tried all of the 4 that I have and get the same response.

    Hi,
I just downloaded Legacy 7 Deluxe. It was 7.0.0.90 Everything went fine, but when I went to download the update it wouldn't I couldn't even get into the Online Help. It seems like I'm not connect to the internet. Has anyone else have this problem. Did I do something wrong when downloaded it? I can't even get into there website.
  • Patricia L. Stevens Banks

They must be doing something or having a problem with their website. You can't connect with them with anything on the Home tab, but you can search IGI or the internet.
  • Mike Fisher

I can't get on the site

  • Sarah Coles

I would like to know if there is anyone out there who has had their genealogy pedigree tree printed by Legacy and if they were satisfied with the results. Any comments? Personally, I love Legacy and it prints out some really nice PDF reports.
  • Kay Fordham

Nice to see some faces to go along with the names for the Legacy Users' Group. Legacy is the greatest!
  • Evelyn Linger Thorn

My only problem with Legacy is that when I enter a picture is looks great on the computer and with some of them I go back a later and in the place of the picture is a white question mark on a blue background and no picture. What have I done wrong? Evelyn
  • Keith McKain

Evelyn - you are adding pictures from a part of your hard-drive that LEGACY has not been told about. So it cannot find the picture. Easiest thing is to put a COPY of every picture you want in LEGACY in the C:/Legacy/Pictures folder. Another way is to tell legacy where to look for your pictures. (OPTIONS-CUSTOMIZE-LOCATIONS TAB). You can also test the pictures in Legacy to see which ones it has lost track of... ENJOY!
  • Chris Sykes

Is there a way to convert a family tree done on Ancestry.com to Legacy?
  • Bob Rowe

I think the only way would be to download a gedcom [if possible] from Ancestry and open it up in Legacy.
  • Alan Jackson

Hi from Australia...I started using genealogy software many years ago and published an Australian branch of an English-based family back in 1993. I wish I had Legacy back then when I was trying to do this. Love this product.
  • Joyce /Shaum/ Rehberg

Hello, I started using Legacy 6 a couple years ago. At that time I also purchased the Legacy Family Tree Video Training Series - Vol. 1. I have to admit I never really mastered sources and notes. My question is; will these lessons still work with Legacy 7?
  • Geoff Rasmussen

Joyce/Shaum/Rehberg - Volume 1 of the Legacy training videos was actually rescripted and republished for Legacy 7. Since version 7 introduced the SourceWriter, the updated Legacy's Ultimate Guide to Sources CD is especially helpful as it thoroughly explains the new SourceWriter. Most of the CDs that you have are probably still okay. We also added a brand new video entitled Mastering Legacy: Names, Dates, and Places. This was not in the series you previously purchased. Hope this helps some....
  • Phillip H. Pitzer

I have used Legacy for several years and having tried many others, LEGACY is still the best, but it does take some effort to learn all the things that it can do, but that is what makes it so great.... I use the Deluxe version, the cost is bargain for all the features you get.

I have a question about the feature where you look up a city, county, State, [ Geo location Database ] This feature along is worth the cost of the Deluxe Version.
Question: Is it possible to have all counties show up with "Co." after the County Name? If I use just the County and State, later I do not know if the two names are City and State or County and State, example:

    Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas, USA

    ***** Sedgwick, Kansas, USA ******

Their is a Sedgwick, Harvey Co., KS, USA, but looking at just Sedgwick, KS, USA, one does not know if is the city of Sedgwick or the county of Sedgwick. If all Counties were listed with "Co." after the name then one would know for sure. I personally change everyone after I look up the county, I have to add "Co." after the name. Couldn't they add another option where I could have Legacy add "Co." after every County? Thanks for any suggestions.
  • Carol Byers

I have taught several Legacy classes, and always recommend their series of videos. They will help you learn the program and how to structure your locations, sources, and events. They have a very good video on handling the census information and how to record it. This allows you to detail and keep track of every person in a family group. I would buy their first series and after you have used them, do it again, several, times...you learn more every time to do. I viewed them several time, and still do it time-to-time. I really like the new source writer and the geo-location data base. Also, the location link to the BING maps, Love being able to see the location from the location list without having to open another browser and re-type the full address.
  • Jo Kotylak

Sorry to say I'm leaving the group, and Legacy. I LOVE the programme, BUT.. a company who deals with families and family trees who in this day and age refuses to add a facility for gay couples to be listed - not good enough. I treasure ALL my family, and want to document all couples. So even though I paid for the legacy deluxe, and the training videos I'm dumping the lot and going to Family Tree Builder, which when you get into it is very Legacy like, but has the facility to add same sex couples. In other words an equal opportunity Family Tree program. So thanks for the learning curve Legacy, but FAMILY FIRST now and always. If you ever become equal opportunity, let me know, I may come back..
  • Sarah Coles

You may ponder that but I have the same problem with people that never marry and have children. In my Ancestry file I have to make note of it but still declare a person as a spouse so the program will work correctly. Same with Legacy and the work around on there is clumsy. I wouldn't give up Legacy though for either reason. I paid good money for it and it works fine for almost all situations.
  • Rick Hammond

I realy do not know what all the bother is about. On my tree I changed the wording from husband and wife to partner and instead of saying married I changed that to same sex union. I did this with the way the program is set up and it looks very respectful for that couple. I would also say the family group sheet I sent to them contained that infromation as partners, not husband and wife. So I really do not know what all the bother is about as Legacy is so versatile you can make it do almost anything you wish. And this couple was pleased with the way I set it up.
  • Susan Maxey

Well...the problem I have exists with all of them and it is just a royal pain.... my middle daughter divorced her first husband and he married the third daughters husbands sister who had a daughter by middle daughters best friends husband but they weren't married and the daughters father married and his wife passed leaving her son by a previous marriage to the custody of my daughter and her (the friend's husband) ...and I really hope you followed that better than I do....

My real question though is: Why can't we use Clooz?
  • Joyce /Shaum/ Rehberg

Geoff Rasmussen- Can you please post a link to where one can order single Training CDs? I would be interested in Guide to Sources CD and Mastering Legacy: Names, Dates, and Places, but could only find them in bundles on the LegacyFamilyTree Store.
  • Sarah Coles

Moral: You can please some of the people some of the time but can't please all of the people all of the time. Like Rick, I just worked around the "problem" and see no reason to dump the program or leave the group because it's a little "trouble" to manipulate.
