That is what I am afraid of. Thankfully, I remembered that I have an older version of Legacy on my notebook - haven't used my notebook in a little while, so what I did was export my data to a gedcom from my updated Legacy program and then did an import with the older version of Legacy. Ta da, it worked. The version on my notebook is 7.0.0.76.
I'm glad you reported the bug Ron and thank you for your response.
What is it that doesn't work with 'Show Line Back to Starting Person'?. I've just tried it and it seems to work but then I am not aware of what it used to do.
What version of Legacy are you using? The newest build Legacy Deluxe Edition 7.4.0.6 has the 'Show Line Back to Starting Person' but when selected does not do anything. Instead of seeing "Judy (Louise, Michael, John)" as one would expect one just sees "Judy".
Sorry, I should have confirmed that I was using 7.4.0.6.
As far as I can see, it is working on my system (Vista sp2). Whatever name I select in Create Report for Descendants of'' I get a full report of descendants. (Albeit broken down into sections by Generation).
Even if I select my son (who is the starting person in Set Relationships) I get a report that shows his parents.
Will,
When it works properly, after each main name will be shown the individuals ancestor line using initials. eg.:
Ron Ferguson (JAF,WAF,WF etc) meaning RonFerguson, son of JAF, grandson of WAF, great grandson of WF. The person's number is also added after the initial.
Which method is best? I moved all my family info into Legacy. Would someone who has been using the software for awhile let me know which is the best method to use for adding pictures - the Picture Gallery or the Picture Center?? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you. Karen
Hi Karen:
The picture Gallery alows you to link pictures to an individual, a marriage or an event. The Picture Center allows you to view all the pictures and to whom they are attached. Using this you can attach the same group picture for instance to several individuals. Be sure to use the help files by clicking on the icon of the same name. Quick difference, but I hop it helps.

Thank you for responding to my picture question. I think I understand what each one does and Picture Center seems to be more useful. But does one have to use one method or the other or can I use whichever one I want when I want? Aren't all the pictures stored in the same Legacy Picture folder? As you can tell I am very new at Legacy.
Karen
The pictures can be anywere on your computer. I don't use C:\Legacy\Pictures at all. Mine are on a separate hard drive in various folders. Legacy creates a link to the photo. If you re-organize [move] any of the linked photos the link is broken. I have done this a time or two. Relinking is easy though.
Thanks for your info on pictures in Legacy. I assumed I had to put the pictures in the C:/Legacy/Pictures so since I don't that will save me some steps.
Karen
Thanks Legacy Family Tree for sponsoring the Immigration Family History Expo next week. And all of you attending remember you will have a chance to win the Acer Netbook PC that the Legacy group will be giving away to a lucky winner. And that's not all it will be preloaded with the latest and greatest Legacy software!
Mysterious curley brackets appeared next to individual's name [v. 7.4.0.6].
In family view I have the letter 'B' inside curley brackets and I don't know where it came from: John J. Smith {B }
Does anyone know how or why that was added to his name? When I go into 'edit individual' the 'B' does not appear. I have checked 'Help' and came up with nothing.
It sounds to me like you have the LDS Options turned on (Options > Customize > General tab. LDS features = lower right corner of that tab) and John J. Smith has information entered in the LDS baptism field. If you don't want the {B } to display on the Family View, uncheck the box for "Show BEPSC on Family View." I hope that helps! :)
A few weeks ago I commented on being "left at the gate" on the new version of Legacy and the disappointment that the church did not include "the rest of us" in access to the data base that many of us volunteered to create. Legacy announced that it was the church that did the blocking although the block was part of Legacy. I now have an email from the church that indicates there will be a announcement next week about letting the rest of us use the new data. My question now is will Legacy allow us to get by the "Block" and if it is possible how does it happen?
David, I am less than certain that the email to which you refer actually has the meaning which you have taken from it. Certainly I am less than convinced, and will await further clarification from FS, before jumping to conclusions.
David, as soon as you are able to sign up for a new.familysearch.org account, the nFS features in Legacy will be available to you. We (Millennia) don't have any further control over the restriction. If you have an account, it can be used. If not, it cannot be used.
Help, please? In Family View, some of the people have >> after the Husband or Wife label. I know I've seen this before, but I can't remember what it means, I can't find it in Help, and I can't see anything common among the people with those brackets. If you can tell me what those brackets mean, I'd appreciate it! :) Thanks!
Go to OPTIONS - Customize - Data Format and see if somehow the boxes were checked. Be sure the first 3 have the "Don't change what I enter" checked - might work... Keith
On Windows 7 - 64 bit OS, the "Program Files" folder is for 64 bit apps. The "Program Files (x86)" is for 32 bit apps. I did not load in either. I installed in the Legacy-default "C:\Legacy".
Greg--I took your advice and used Mozy for backup. Now my computer is a mess and I can't get much of anything. I downloaded the Mozy material--i.e. saved files. What do I do now? How do I get it on the various programs? Sorry to bother you, but I just don't know what to do.
Here is a great opportunity for those of you who live in Southern Arizona and want to know more about the
Legacy Family Tree genealogy program as well as those who already use it.
This coming Wednesday afternoon, April 21, 2010 Geoff Rassmussen from Millennia, producers of Legacy software, will present a seminar in Sun City Vistoso.
The seminar will be held in the Vistoso Center, 1565 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd.
in the Apache Room from 1 - 4 p.m. If you have heard Geoff speak at any
conferences or seminars in the area, you know what a great teacher he is.
Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited so reservations are
required. We would be happy to have persons from your society attend. Geoff
will be teaching sessions on Legacy software. Please contact Barb Krecklow
at rubrb@comcast.net for reservations or information.
There is not a way to do this directly, but if you know some SQL and have Open Office, you can. I imagine that it can also be done using Access, but I do not know that program. To open your .fdb file in OOo see my Tutorial at http:www.fergys.co.uk/Blogs/OODB.php
William I had a similar problem entering a mixed case surname e.g. DeJong. With the default options, I could enter it that way, but if I chose another surname data format option (Options/Customize/Data Format), then I could not get back the mixed case option. If I chose "Don't change what I enter" under Letter Case of Surnames, then the Apply button was disabled.
I finally fixed it by choosing to Reset to Defaults on the Customize screen, followed by Save. Unfortunately that resets all customizations.
Has anyone addressed the question of whether a person should be listed as a Jew if they were a prcticing Jew or a Jew (from Isreal). It seems to me that if a person is a practicing Jew their offspring may not be considered Jewish.
I have one that was is from Lithuania and I mistakenly assumed that he would have "tribal" Jewish roots.
A couple questions: How do I get rid of the "bookmarks" at he bottom of the page?
and I have some sort of a "link" problem. When I look at my own entry by opening
there and then clicking on my father, I see only myself as children, but if I go to
my father by starting at my grandfather I see myself and the three brothers. as
children.. It depends on where I "approach" the entry for my father what it
shows a children. Any idea what I have messed up? And how to correct it?
Thanks.
...Lew...
Clearing the bookmarks is very easy just click on the book to the left of the bookmarks and select clear all if you want them all gone. Or just delete the ones you want to remove. The other problem I would check to make sure you have not entered him twice in your tree first and if so just merge them. Hope this helps
Thanks Rick, I cleared the bookmarks but the three little "windows" at the bottom
of the page still have a person listed as a "jump to" sort of thing.
The other problem is not a double entry, at least in the index, of names. I do see
a double of myself when I look at the list of siblings of my brothers. ie. with one
of my brothers in the main person and click the siblings icon. They are both
shown as [1] + so I don't know how that happened.
Any other ideas? Thanks.
Can I ask you this question when you click on your father from you do you see his parents. I think you may have a duplicate entry and you are attached to that entry. Have you checked for duplicates in your file yet. It would seem you have one person in twice. And you may only be attached to a duplicate entry for your father. Did you start from scratch with your tree or did you import it from another tree after you had entered your data. I would mean you have to merge the duplicates and make sure as you move back from yourself they are linked to you. It may be a very simple fix but not being able to see your tree its make it diffucult to see what the problem is. I still think its a duplicate entry one linked to you the other not.
Yep I started with ME and then wife then brothers and then father etc. And yes
I can start with myself and go up all the way, if I go beyond my father, to granddad
then back down it's fine. I's just that one step, up to dad then back down that
doesn't work . I've checked all the entries in the index and no dups. :-(
But thanks for the try. :-)
lew
I had done that but deleted the the one and re linked the right one . That must be
what it is that causes this. Now how do I rectify it. ? I thought that had been
taken care of. I guess there are hidden links that did not get replaced. Should I
just delete my whole family and re enter it?
Thanks.
Hi, I have various photos for each individual in the Photo Gallery, however when I create a web page only one photo per person is available for view on the web page. How can I get the other photos of my choice available for view on the web-pages?
Thank you,
Danny
Lewis
I had the same problem. To make matters worse I had two relatives with the same name. I deleted the link (unlink) to the parents and relinked them to the desired person. The problem goes on if the off spring are also linked in error. You have to "disassemble" the line and put it back together without deleting the individual with the associated notes and data.
Dave
Danny, It is not straightforward. Using Legacy you would need to create an event for each of the picture which you wish to include and attach the picture to it.
Personally I add them manually to each web page as this allows me to put them where I want them instead of being at the mercy of Legacy. In the tutorials on my website I give an example of who to do this using javascript which you can copy and put into your page http://www.fergys.co.uk/Blogs/PicInsert.php.
If you try it an hit any problems, please feel free to use the mail option at the bottom of that page.
I wonder if it is possible to copy master sources from one family file to another. I have several family files for different friends (I do the intial data entry for some), and often times I use the same sources for online databases etc. Is there a way to just use (copy, share) the master source that I have created in one family file in another?

The software generated a bug (OK, these things happen), but it meant I had to re-import my database, which has in excess of 150,000 individuals.
Many of these have '1st of'' etc. as parts of their names - e.g. 1st King of Norway.
Now, convention has it that '1st' is '1st' and not '1St', and 'of' is 'of' and not 'Of'.
But Legacy does not agree, and has converted all my entries like this into capitals.
The upload took nearly two hours, and now I am having to go back and do it again, ensuring the 'Format names and places' is unchecked!

I brought the data in from a gedcom, which I used yesterday to transfer the data to my website. It all went on OK.
Now, after a second attempt to bring it back into Legacy, and having unchecked the Format names box, the data STILL is in uppercase!
It only took an hour this time, though!
