Many thanks for pointing out that the expanding images on my tutorial were not working. I completely rewrote the site a short while ago and the odd error still crops up. I have now fixed that one at http://www.fergys.co.uk/Blogs/PicInsert.php. I had omitted to put the script in the header.
I had better look at those scattered through my site - hopefully they will be OK as the are on a separate system.!
I am exporting a gedcom file, which includes source information, to my website which runs on the TNG software. I noticed today that the "text/Comments" in the source detail is flowing through with the gedcom file even though the check box on the source detail screen, to include the detail on reports, is NOT ticked. I had assumed if the box was not ticked that the detail information would not be included in the gedcom file.
Is there a way to exclude the detail information flowing through into the gedcom, but permit the source information to flow through to the gedcom.
Has anyone run Animap on a Windows 7 64 bit machine? I'm thinking about upgrading to the latest version of Animap and I am aware that there are programs that won't work on 64 bit machines running Windows 7.
I have printed out a 'Descendant Book' under Reports with a 'Report Option' to 'Suppress details for living people'. The problem is that this option also removes the person's RIN number which I very much want included. Is there a way around this?
I assume you have the RIN after the name? The only way I can think of at present is to have the User ID the same as the RIN, you can do this automatically using Options>Customise>Other and select to use this instead.
This does not work either. It puts the user ID only after people who are no longer living or after those who married the person in question. Thank you anyway.
Hmmm. I can't think of anything else. Whilst I generally do have my RINs or User IDs on reports etc. I do not bother about them for the living, so hadn't noticed that they are not there.
Thank you Brian for your suggestion but the problem with using the Descendant Narrative Report instead is that one does not have the option to show the generation line back to the starting person, ie. Judy Schneider [41] (Louise, Adelard, Phillipee). I very much want to include this information as well. This option would be a bonus to have in the Descendant Narrative Report as well.
Has anyone heard any news on Legacy and syncing with the New Family Search? Back when they released an update in January or February the newsletter said that update to release 7.5 should follow in a month. Still have not seen anything and I don't find anything on their web site. Any news?
I have the 7.4 update and new.familysearch is on that. I haven't figured out just how to work it yet, I find it much easier to go into new.familysearch direct. When you click on the new.familysearch link within Legacy, you still have to sign in, and if you are not a member of the LDS church you won't get in yet, anyway.
Has anyone used the timeline feature or has a suggestion as to where to find one.
I have a separate file that I store "possibilities" in. Sometimes I come up with siblings or others that fill a void in my main data base.
I am looking for a way to have multiple candidates, not currently related, sorted by time.
Dave, I am not really with you here, what would be in the GEDCOM?
You can easily have a look at the Legacy Timelines, which are text files, and hence can be opened in any text editor. Often when constructing a timeline for Legacy I will make it in the OOo Spreadsheet, and then copy it to Legacy\Timelines.
I don't see the advantage of using a GEDCOM; all the tags would have to be removed and correct separators included etc. Perhaps you could illustrate your intention by telling us what you are intending to do.
Ron
I have gone about as far as I can go in my lineage but keep on trying. My family originates in Portsmouth, but there are many loose strings in the surrounding area, so I collect them in a separate file and look for connections, such as brothers, etc.
I was looking for a way to take these (unattached) names and put them in a time line to see if some fit together.
Maybe I am just not sure how to do it in Legacy
Dave
Here is one way. Make a copy of your Legacy file and import your candidates Legacy file into that copy. In the copy, hook the youngest member of each of your candidates lines to your father as a sibling. Generate the timeline chart for yourself. All your candidates will be on the timeline chart, but you will have to figure out which family they really belong to.
Dave, I have been having a think about this, on and off, and I think this can be done by creating your GEDCOMs and using Gedxlate from http://www.gedmagic.com/GEDxlate.htm. This is free, but it reads the GEDCOM and will convert to various formats including Excel or CSV.
I would think that be playing around a little one would be able to compare the two files. My own thinking would be to convert to CSV, import into Open Office spreadsheets and compare them. I haven't tried this but it would be the way I would have a crack at it.
I thought this Gedxlate sounded great and I installed it only to get a run-time error '339'--"component comct132.ocx not correctly registered file is missing or invalid." Sorry to say it won't run on my computer. I uninstalled it and tried again to no avail. Disappointed. Any thoughts on this?
Just discovered the problem. Gedxlate won't run under Windows 7 so I had to make it compatible by running under Windows XP, SP2. It opened this time so looks like it's good to go after I download a GED file into it.
Stephanie
I am running it on Windows 7 and had no trouble installing it. I am having problems with accuracy. I have a bunch of dates that show up as 1907 when there is no such date in the file
Dave
Stephanie, I don't know much about this program except that I do use it from time to time.
David, I can only suggest that you have a look at the GEDCOM file in Notepad, or any text editor - Notepad2 or PSPad would be better and see if the date is in the GEDCOM - I cannot see how the program can invent a date :-)
Well, just downloaded a GED from Ancestry.com and opened it in Gedxlate after selecting the fields I wanted included. I then saved it out to open in Open Office as a CSV file and it worked like a charm. I did some reformatting on the dates and checked out a few things and it seems to be fine. I love it! I'm going to find this quite useful. Thanks for the great tip, Ron!
Was checking out my spreadsheet here that I made from using the Gedxlate. Problem is with the date format. When I enter my dates into Ancestry.com I use the day, month, year formula (ex.: 6 Apr 1900). In cases where I don't know the day I put in Apr 1900 and other times I might not even be sure of the year so I'd put in "abt 1900." Well, in my spreadsheet the date 6 Apr 1900 appears as 4/6/00. Not good as that doesn't tell me if it's1900, 1800, 2000 or whatever.
Stephanie, how have you set up the date in your spreadsheet (which is it btw)? I am wondering if you have it set to only display the last two numbers in the year.
I have had a look at my own GEDCOM and in Gedxlate created a csv file, following which I imported into OOo. Like you only the last two digits of the year displayed until I reformatted the Date style for that column.
I figured out my own problem and will put it on here so others can see what do do if they are working in Open Office with this Gedxlate. You have to change any dates from the automatic "standard" to "text" on this screen you get when you create your file to be put into a spreadsheets. This will give you the complete date as you have in your file. Be sure to highlight all columns that contain dates you wish to keep in text format.
Ron, Stephanie
I find that my "date problem" happens in OOo. If I use the date format xx,xx,yyyy then most of my dates appear correctly. For the ones that don't (1904) I can switch to default format and the correct date appears - I'm working on it.
Stephanie - if you use text formatting, the sorting of the data base is odd.
Dave
Help! I must have done somethng, but I don't know what. The button bar with the picture icons for sources, notes, etc. has disappeared from the Individual Information screen (except for the temple). When I open the screen, all the buttons flash on, and then disappear, just leaving the temple. To add sources, I have to cick on the temple, get into the ordinances screen, then click the source button, and scroll to the event I wish to add a source for.
Can't for the life of me imagine what I have done (not aware that I did anything, actually). I have gone into Customise and tried to figure out what I need to select, but I'm at a loss. With my old dial up, it takes minutes sometimes to open up just one screen, so going the long way round is REALLY inconvenient and time consuming.
This may have already been discussed but I can't find the discussion. With all the little netbooks coming out now, has anyone tried using Legacy on them? Is Legacy even compatible with them? They look easier to pack around on a research trip than a laptop.
I have a netbook that I use when I go to the library and I use Legacy on it. I have a thumb drive with all my info on it. I really like it, it is much easier to carry around than a laptop.
I have been using a netbook for a couple of years now. In fact I am on my 2nd one. The first was small and only had a solid state drive. I now have an Acer and really like it. It has 120 gb harddrive and 1 gb ram. It has a built in webcam. The only potential drawback is it doesn't have a CD drive. I have no problems using Legacy on it.
I am creating a report which includes an illegitimate child of Sarah. I put the father as Unknown but then it says Sarah married unknown. As far as I know she didn`t marry the father, or anyone else that I can find. Does anyone know how I enter it so that it gives the correct info.
Carolyn
The inclusion of Sarah Married Unknown" can be corrected by going to the Marriage Screen and checking the box labeled "This couple did not marry", at the top left of the screen.
Your "Peter marries someone Alice Smith" may be due to a ghost marriage. You need to check the marriage list and see if there are two marriages for Peter.
Having eliminated that option you may like to go to Options>Customise>View, click the Edit Default Marriage Wording button and change all the content of the boxes and delete all the "someone"s. Mine simple say married, next married, partnered, next partnered, as appropriate.
Thanks Ron,
Thanks for the tip about editing the defaults. I did it and then deleted the entries for them and then added them again and it came out ok.
Carolyn
I have the same issue as Carolyn with the "married someone Alice Smith". I don't have any other marriages (no ghosts), but it's also not with every marriage. Most of my marriages have the correct wording, it's just this one that says "someone". Neither individuals nor their marriage are private. By deleting the spouse (the "someone") and then re-entering it, it now has the correct wording.
Missing images
I added an image last night, and it is still there, but older images have just disappeared, leaving a nothing on the page, but there is a blue question mark on the insert image page - and when I ask Legacy to search for the image, it cannot find it.
Is there any info about the latest update at Legacy (7.5.0.56). Legacy said it was going to write more about it but I haven't seen anything. Can anyone tell me what this update really did? I am concerned as I noticed that when I do a 'family search' through Legacy with the password etc, it states that Legacy is asking permission to 'see' my database and I NEVER get through to family search anyway even though I have signed up etc. So can anyone tell me what the update is all about and is it worth it? I recently went through a Legacy glitch and had to re-load everything (had backup) but it is frustrating!
As a second thought - where do you put the Cemetery listing?? I managed to get it on the family view screen but it won't print!? This has been a quirk of mine for a long time! I can't understand why it's more important to put the "burial date' on screen and not the cemetery!! Anyone have any thoughts about this?
Legacy 7.5.0.56 is out and has been for a while. If you have the deluxe version you can update from the Legacy Home Tab. You can always tell the current version by visiting the Legacy Website. The history of the updates can also be accessed from the Download Update page.
The password required for the IGI page is the one you used to register with Family Search and not your Legacy Password. However this search is rapidly becoming irrelevant by Family Search and I suggest that you use https://www.familysearch.org/ instead.
Am I missing something? I am still unable to search LDS through Legacy. I do have the latest Legacy, and an account with familysearch.org. Any idea when we will be able to do this?
Thank you very much for the help! I will take all the advise and put it to good use! I too am still unable to search LDS through Legacy as Florence but it is easy to just open a tab and click a link anyway!
For Lelani & Florence - currently you cannot sign into LDS through Legacy. I tried the same thing and eventually contacted LDS who were very helpful. At this point you still need to sign into LDS independently of Legacy.
