Thanks Heather!  but why all the hype about Legacy's new update connecting to LDS??  I still cannot get any concrete answers about this latest update and I still  think Legacy is just trying to get peoples info?!!  (gedcom or something?)  I just don't know anymore!  but thanks again for the help!
  • Ron Ferguson

As has been, stated many times, there are two distinct Family Search processes in operation, neither of which has anything to do with Legacy, other than the fact that through Legacy we will be able to access them.

One is for LDS members only and concerns registrations with LDS (I don't know the actual terms) and has nothing to do with the non-LDS users. This can be access by LDS members now. This not the same as being registered on the Family Search Site.

Ultimately the whole of the new Family Search - which has nothing to do with the Legacy usage above, will also be available through Legacy when finally released by Family Search. It is currently under test by LDS members. Some documents are already available through the Family Search website, via the URL I gave in a previous post.

The current IGI access via Legacy will, I guess, be phased out since it will be replaced by the new Family Search.

This is probably a simplified version of what is going on, but serves as a working model!

  • Florence Romeo Stoneberg

Thanks, Ron.  I thought this had been made available already and I somehow missed it or was doing something wrong and couldn't access it.

Has anyone else had problems with the internet search portion of legacy.  Every time I try it using Rootsweb as my default program it returns that there is no information on this individual.  Even for people that I have personially uploaded to this site.  I know that Ancestry bought Rootsweb several years ago and they may be some colusion with the two different search sites that may be interfering woth this fuction to force people to purchase an Ancestry subscription.  Call me paranoid but there are worst things that have happened in the genealogy search sites.
  • Jane Chapman

@Ronald and anyone else who can help

I have been having trouble for quite a long time with the internet search on Legacy - however, it applies to all sites and I just get a message "error code: file not found" whichever site I am trying to get into - as a result I have been just going direct to the website concerned and putting all the details in - a bit silly of me really as it would make sense to sort out the internet function on Legacy.  My problem is clearly a different problem to yours though but your comment prompted me to seek help myself (thanks for the push, Ronald) So ... any suggestions anyone?

  • Mabel Horrocks

Can photos that are already on your comp. be "transferred" into the Picture Center or Gallery or somewhere so they can be posted to the desired individual.  I have done the scanning bit but want to get to pics that are already on my comp.  ???
  • Bob Rowe

It doesn't matter where the pictures are on your computer. When you 'add' a photo, Legacy simply creates a link to the photo in the database. If you plan to organize your photos you will have to do that before you link them to Legacy. Doing this after will break the link and you will have to go back and relink them to the new location.
  • Sarah Coles

What I do with photos is keep them organized under each individual in folders under each name along with any pertinent data.  Then I make copies of the photos I want to use in Legacy and put those in the pictures folder under Legacy that is located on your hard drive and in my case it's under c:\legacy\pictures.  That way the "link" won't be broken if you decide to move around your originals.  I make folders in the pictures folder of Legacy for each individual.
  • Lewis Hartswick

Sarah I have a bunch of related questions. Would you please contact me direct?

I couldn't find a way to get to you direct. Lhartswick  at  earthlink dot net

  • William Douglas

That is good advice to put your images in a file in the Legacy folder, but how you file them within that folder will depend on whether you then plan to upload them to the internet and what folders that program uses.

For example, if you are using TNG, then your files should represent the folders used there: Documents, Headstones, Histories, multimedia and Photos.

When it comes to technology I am lost. Last year I bought a new HP G62-144DX notebook computer. I have an old IBM thinkpad which I had been using but alot of times I would run out of room on it. Didn't know what programs I could delete. Anyway I had my Legacy program and all of my data, pictures everything on a flash stick. Well when I bought the new Laptop the guy at Best Buy talked me out of buying additional flashsticks and buying a Western Digital My Passport Essential 250 GB USB 2.0. He told me I could use it just like my flashstick. So I brought it home and plugged it in and I managed to somehow make it the backup of my computer and I don't have enough room to backup my whole computer which is not what I wanted to do. It called itself My Passport G: hard drive and CD Drive H removable storage. I do have a few files on the H drive. But this is not what I wanted to do. Is there anyway I can use it like I did with my flashsticks. I only want my legacy program and all my pictures, documents etc. on it. Also when I went to plug it into my Old IBM Thinkpad it was trying to go out to internet or something I can't remember but it wouldn't work on it. My flashsticks I can go back and forth. Right now My Legacy program is on my C: drive with all its data pictures etc. (Everything from Legacy program) plus it got put on My Passport G drive. I probably haven't explained it very well but I sure hope someone can help me. I want to be able to unplug the My Passport drive from one computer and plug it into another computer to be able to use the Legacy program there also. I have the Legacy Deluxe 7.5.0.56 installed haven't even begun to figure all that out. But I know I have alot of fixing to do to get it ready for when we are able to use with new family search. I have 18877 individuals with 7326 Families and 526 sources. I need to learn how to source better and I'm sure I have some duplicate families and I need to get my locations all fixed up. Today I downloaded the Geo Locations but I'm not sure I did it right but I have the downloads on my C drive but I can always redo that if I have to. I'm just mainly concerned about the use of this My Passport. Sorry for the rambling. I'm also trying to figure out this Genealogy Wise Program. I use facebook for keeping in touch with family and friends. But I saw this program on Legacy and thought I'd give it a shot because it deals with genealogy. Any help here would be appreciated. I don't know how to blog. As you can see I'm not real computer literate. I'm a simple person and need really good instructions.
  • Lewis Hartswick

Sounds like you need some local help. Is there a local genealogical club or at

least some one you can have help in person. If you were here in Albuquerque I'd

    be happy to help.

  • Bob Rowe

    Hey Sharon,

I tend to agree with Lewis. It seems that you would be wise to befriend yourself with someone in the know on computers. You must have some teenagers in Fountain that could help. How about your church?

Anyway, that Passport is a fine drive and probably the correct way to go. It may have come loaded with some kind of backup software that you may have clicked on something saying 'yes' to making it your backup drive. You don't have to use any of the stuff that came on the drive. Many thumb drives have similar programs on them. If you have filled up the drive already you can delete it all and start over with a clean slate. Then you can use Windows Explorer to copy your stuff from one computer to the other. The drive letters might be different between the computers so it is important to look at the drive label; "My Passport". Then you know that you are copying things to the correct drive.

    Good Luck!

  • Ben Street Sessions

Where can I hire a genealogical researcher to trace my maternal lineage? I think they came to the U.S. from England, Ireland, and Scotland. and lived in Virginia, Tennessee, N.Carolina, and Mississippi. The surname is STREET.

    Blessings, Ben Street Sessions

  • Sharon Haas

Thanks Bob & Lew. I will have to ponder on this. I think if I move everything off the H drive to my C drive I will be safe to delete everything from My Passport Drive G: I should probably also make sure I move the last backup not sure about that one. I get very nervous because I don't want to mess things up. I have no teenagers in the area So when I have a clear mind I will try to read the manual that I had to download in order to know anything about this drive and I had already done set everything up by then. Wish it came with a printed manual that would have explained it all out before I plugged it in.
  • Ron Ferguson

Sharon, I am only able to give you general information, as otherwise I think I may confuse us both! But hopefully it will help.

For the moment forget all your flash cards, multiple drives and any USB sticks, or whatever you call your add-ons. Simply install Legacy on your C: Drive on all your machines, as recommended by Legacy, if you haven't already done so. It is important that you do this. Whilst it is possible to run Legacy from an external drive, you can only do this for one machine, and for simplicity I do not recommend this for you, it would be better to install the program on each machine. Just use your external drive for your Data.

Imagine each drive as a filing cabinet in which there are a number of folders - providing you have put them there! If, on your main PC you go to the C: Drive and open the Legacy folder, you will it contains a number of folders these you can copy across into your G Drive, or any other Drive. In other words all you are doing is copying the folders and their contents into another filing cabinet. You Legacy data files are contained in the Data folder, so that should be copied across, and then any other which may contain stuff which you want eg. any folder with pictures in it.

Having done that you can now remove the G drive from the PC *BUT* either switch off the PC first *OR* use "Safely Remove Hardware", otherwise you may lose some/all data.

On the second machine, on which you have already installed Legacy in the C: Drive, plug in the G Drive - you may find that it now has a different letter, that does not matter. Open Legacy and then File>Open Family File, in the box at the top of this screen select your external drive and in the Legacy Data folder you will find you family.fdb file, just open that. You will also, in the same way have to tell this machine where your picture files are.

  • Ron Ferguson

Having written that, I wished to edit it a little, but could not see an Edit button! So, as I described for your second machine, you can also redirect Legacy to use the G Drive for your data on your first machine, so that an update on either machine will be there for both. When you are really comfortable with this you could delete your .fdb files from C:/Legacy>Data etc. to avoid future confusion.
  • Sharon Haas

Ron thanks. That's exactly what I want to do. But I will first have to move the info off my H drive. Because WD my passport made G and H. Then I will have to delete everything off G. Then I just have to copy my Legacy Data and the rest of folders to G. and it won't make any other drives. Is this how I am understanding you. Because if it is that's exactly what I want to do.
  • Sharon Haas

Well I'm off to do some Indexing. Didn't get any done yesterday. I will check back later. Thanks for the help I will try it later.
  • Ron Ferguson

    I

As I said I can only give you the basics, 'm afraid that I find the multiplicity of drives to which you refer totally confusing - probably because I haven't got your set up in front of me, and hence cannot form a picture, which I'm afraid is the way my head works!

As I said, I can only describe to you the basics, and I'm afraid that you will have to work out how to fit this to your set-up yourself. If you get stuck on a *specific* point or hit a problems then I will be happy to try and help sort it.

  • Sharon Haas

Thanks Ron. I'm going to try to working on it tomorrow evening or Thursday. I did read the manual but will have to reread it. So I put the manual on a flashstick so I can plug it into my other computer while I work on the drive from this computer.
  • Victoria Turner

My Legacy 7.5 which I downloaded to update my 7 a couple of days ago has somehow suddenly deleted all my Master Lists. View/Master Lists confirms that.

What has happened and how do I/Can I get them back?  I have started a discussion but I am getting desperate as the programme is now virtually useless. Never had problems with Legacy before in all the years I have used it.

  • Victoria Turner

Please ignore my previous post. I have now solved what was actually not a problem.  I had ticked the verified box accidentally Sorry to waste people's time.

I found the Legacy webinar on Dropbox for Genealogists very useful - good information on how to sync Legacy to Dropbox without necessarily moving data files from their original location. For those who may be interested, the archived version will be available on-line until 2 May: http://www.millenniacorp.com/_videos/webinars/dropbox/dropbox.html
  • LeLani von Bober

Wonder if anyone else has this same problem?  I recently did the update for the lastest version and noticed that when I want to print out a report, when I try to reset the margins lower (usually to save paper)  the margins will not change and I end up wasting more paper!  I've tried to do a pdf and can't change them there either.  This was not a problem with the 'older' version.  Can someone help me on this problem?

    Thank you so much!

  • Margi Peoples

    Hi,

I'm new to Legacy and have a question. I put one of my dad's cousin in the the program and she has 13 kids, 50 grandkids and 54 great-grandkids and 1 great-great grandchild. I just want to put the names of her kids not the others. Where would I place them without naming each and everyone of them?

     Thanks for your help.

       Margi

  • William Douglas

    Margi,

I am not sure I understand what it is you are trying to do!

You want to put them in, but not name them?

You can either give them a mention in the comments box, so anyone looking at the details of your dad's cousin would see the detail, and that would mean you do not need a record of all of them.

Or you can list '13 children' without allocating a sex, as a 'child' of your dad's cousin, and below them you can write, again as a 'child', '50 children', and so on.

  • Jeannine

If you do not intend on continuing down any particular line, you can always make notes on the family in the Marriage Notes. e.g. "This couple had 13 kids, 50 grandkids and 54 great-grandkids and 1 great-great grandchild".
  • Carolyn Winterburn

Hi, I always seem to have a problem with Spouses. I am making a report but on one of the family it says "William not found Mary Ann" instead of " William married Mary Ann". I just can`t find anywhere in the manuel that tells me how to make this right. Can anyone help?

    Regards Carolyn

  • Carolyn Winterburn

I meant to add that I have deleted her and added her again but it made no difference.

  • Ron Ferguson

Carolyn, there are two things to check here: 1) go to Options>Customise>View, click the Edit Marriage Wording button and adjust to what you would like, and 2) this may be overrideen for individual marriages by going to the Marriage Information Screen>Wording Options and, again adjust.
  • Ron Ferguson

Carolyn, there are two things to check here: 1) go to Options>Customise>View, click the Edit marriage wording button and adjust to suit, and 2) for individual marriages this may be overridden by going to the Marriage Information Screen>Wording Options, and, again adjust to suit.
  • Carolyn Winterburn

    Thanks Ron,

The 2nd option was the one. I changed it and now it is ok. Isn`t it easy when you know how!

Just went through the discussions and didn't see matching question:

I have been transcribing a family tree from a book into Legacy and there are numerous

instances of a child, either died at birth or "in infancy" with no name. I have been

entering " unknown " for the given name but Legacy displays this a real name

with capitol U ( Unknown ). I think this is a bit confusing and thought it may be

possible to either make the first letter lower case or some other "convention"

to denote this fact.  What ever technique is adopted it should be consistent

with a gedcom to enable others who may use this source. Any ideas or suggestions?

     Thanks

Hi, I have saved an item to my clipboard but, even after looking in the manual for help, I can't find how to look at it. It must be easy.

Thanks Brian , the clipboard that I saved to was from a report book.

  • Marc Ordman

hello, i downloaded the latest version of Legacy.  now, when i select Temple, Go to Temple Ordinance Tracking Center, i then get an error box that says Command Line Error, Not Enough Command Line Options.  so, i can't get in.  is this a software problem with the latest version?  thank you for your help.

  • Lewis Hartswick

I have a problem with linking to existing people.  Scenario:

One family (A) entire family with descendants etc (no parents).

Second family (B) complete with both up and down generations.

Find that the father of husband of A is the husband of B (ie he was not on the

list of children of B). I discover this and try to link by right-click on the box for

the father of husband A and click "existing person" from the list of names I

double click on the right person. The name shows up for the father but not the

mother and the A person does not show up in the list of children of B.

What do I have to do to get the entire group of both families to link???

I even tried to do the same for the mother and get some response that she is

already linked to the person "Do I want to link again?" or something to that

    effect.

     Thanks for any help.

       ...Lew...

  • Rick Hammond

Lew: Simply go to family  B and click add another child and select existing person then input the husband of family A as the child of the parents of family B. That shoulld work fine and bring everything over in line as he is now attached to family B.

  • Lewis Hartswick

OK. Thanks. I'll give that a try. I came up with the info from the other direction so

that was the way i started but what you say makes sense. :-)

  • Andi Durbin

I want to search my database to find anyone that has Ireland in any of the fields.  Then I want to output those individuals to a summary individual report.  Seems pretty simple but darned if I can figure it out.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Andi

  • Ron Ferguson

Only you know know which fields may include "Ireland", so I will limit myself to the obvious ones, birth place, christening place, death place, burial place, events place. You may have others, but the search principle is the same.

Go to Search>Find>Detailed Search. In the first row select Individual; Birth Place; Contains; Ireland. Then select OR and in the second row: Individual; Chr Place; Contains; Ireland. OR third row: Individual; Death Place; Contains; Ireland.

Legacy only allows 3 conditions at any one time. So, check that "Clear list before this Search" is checked and click the Create Button, and on the new screen select Options>Advanced Tagging. On the next screen select a convenient tag, say, 1, and then "Everyone in Search List", and close.

Click Search>Find, and you will return to the main search screen. Change the first row to read Individual; Tag 1; Equals; Tagged. OR second row: Individual; Burial Place; Contains; Ireland. OR third row: Individual; Event Place; Contains; Ireland. Check that "Clear list before this Search" is checked, then repeat the create and tagging routine as before, but choose, say, tag 2.

Now use the Search button to return to the main Search and search for individuals who have tag1 AND tag2 tagged.

There are other ways of doing this but I have chosen the one which I think is the most straight forward.

  • Andi Durbin

Thanks.  I did it a slightly different way by tagging from the Master Location List (thank goodness I wasn't doing England!) but got the same result.  Appreciate the help!

  • Ron Ferguson

Like I said, there are various ways of doing it. I wouldn't fancy going through my Location List and tagging all those with England in either!

  • Carolyn Winterburn

Hi, I did a silly thing. I thought I had finished saving a report and so, as I wanted to tidy up the files in My Documents, I changed the File name. I then realised I hadnt done a relationship record. When I tried to save it as a PDF file it said it couldnt find the location. I tried to save it in another place but it wouldn't do it. I changed the file name back but that doesnt work either. Any suggestions?

    Carolyn

  • Rick Hammond

What I usually do when I create a report is always select screen/printer option first then I view the report and if I like what I see I create a pdf file of it. It then opens the window to where I want to save it and I can change it to any place I wish. So either I am missing something from what you stated or are you trying to make a report from another report. If the problem keeps happening go to your file menu click file maintenance and then click check and repair. I am sure everything will return to normal.

    Rick

  • Carolyn Winterburn

    Hi Rick,

The save button just didnt work, so I did what you said then restarted and BINGO.

    Thanks so much

  • Cindy Abrams

Is there a way to combine two files? I checked the help section, but couldn't find anything. Thanks!
