  • Fred Close

Just started researching the family of Alexander Erskine born May 1842 somewhere in Scotland and Marion Morris born the in December 1850. I believe that both traveled to Pittsburgh and met and married there and began raising a family with the first born, Janet in 1873.

I am looking for resources as Scotland seems quite different than England.
  • Kay Campbell

I am reserching ALL McGeorge names worldwide.

Do you have any other information that would be helpful? There's 2 candidates in the 1851 census transcription:
parents Jane & William, in Edinburgh
parents John & Susan, boorn Fife, living in Lanark.
Do you have their Pittsburgh marriage certificate?

  • Jolene Rebecca Connelly

My Scottish ancestors according to census records would be Isabella Mason, daughter of Andrew Mason. They moved to Pennsylvania (Norristown area.) I believe Isabella came over in May of 1822 (according to passenger logs) from Greenock, Scotland with Jean, Hugh and another child on board the Sachem. (Andrew was not aboard this ship, and I have not been able to find when he came across the pond.) I have not been able to find any information about them IN Scotland, though.

Has anyone come across the Masons? Isabella was born ~1820.

Have a look at the catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland, it's amazing what they have. Also, have a look at the discussion thread I started on "Where They Lived". You may find some useful material there - for example the original Statistical Account of Scotland was written in the 1790s, and the Ministers often referred to how their parishes had changed in the last few years.
  • Kay Campbell

  • John Archer

  • Donlyn Arbuthnot

I am an Arbuthnot. Our ancestry can be traced back to Northern Ireland but exactly how we are connected to the Arbuthnott's in Scotland is unknown. This part of the tree seems to be missing. I would love to be able to continue the tree back to Scotland and our roots - but I have no idea how to do that. I fear that we will never know. Today, I dress up as my Arbuthnot ancestors (the women who married Arbuthnot's) in Colorado and share our history and how they lived their lives as wild west gold miners and later as homesteaders in Colorado Territory.
  • Barbara Butler

Hi, Just a note to let you know that if a child dies and they have more children they name them the same name. So you may find more then 1 person with the same name

Quoting Joy: " have an ancestor Rev. Dr. John SMART b. 23 Feb 1764 at Eckford Moss, "

Do you know which Denomination he was a Rev in? Or any of the parishes he held? I've looked through the Fasti for the Church of Scotland (available for download at the Internet Archive) and I can't find him.
  • John Archer

Hi Joy, I guess they could be related but Pringle is a reasonably commom name. I don't have a lot about mine except two brothers married two sisters.
  • Liz Loveland

Hi all, My ancestors and their collateral lines and allied families lived primarily in Fife, especially in Kirkcaldy, Cupar, Markinch, Dysart, and Abbotshall. The closest line moved to Edinburgh in the late 1800s and my line moved to the US in 1880. I have traced my Philp and Anderson families to the 1830s and my Wilson, Deas, Honeyman, Pearson, Ness, and Elder families father, and have also traced some of the allied families. I have a couple of brick walls that I hope to write a post about in the discussion board soon.

    Hi Everyone,
The Reids that I am looking for are Thomas Reid and Ann(nee Ferrier or Ferria) They were married in 1889 March 30 in Dundee. My grandmother Helen (Ferrier) Reid was born 1897 13th June in District of St. Clement in the Burgh of Dundee. In spite of all this infomation I can't find them anywhere, mainly due to the fact that so many have the same name.
Are any of your Reids from the same are or have same names? I think there may have been a sister Margaret but am not sure.
    Happy searching.

    Hello All,
I've just joined and am looking forward to reading all the posts. My primary interest in Scotland is my husband's HENDERSON families. Other name interests: GREIG, Edinburgh; CURRIE, Edinburgh; GLEN (or Glean), Fife; HUTTON, PATERSON of Fife; HODGE, Fife; HOPE of Dirleton, E.Lothian; CAMPBELL, Argyll. I'm happy to share any info. on these families.

  • Heather Fyfe Ellis Fitzgibbon

To continue with Bobby Timson's comment about the naming trend for the Scottish, I was given a naming pattern list and it definitely helps to knock down the brick walls.
    It is as follows:
First son is named after father's father
Second son- named after mother's father
Third son- named after the father
Fourth son- name after the father's oldest brother
Fifth son- named after the mother's oldest brother
First daughter- named after mother's mother
Second daughter- named after father's mother
Third daughter- named after the mother
Fourth daughter- named after the mother's oldest sister
Fifth daughter- named after the father's oldest sister
  • Bobby Timson

    Thanks Heather, that is great.
  • Liz Loveland

In my experiences, the beginning of the list is pretty standard but the later part of the list varies somewhat from family to family. These are the ones I've found to hold true for almost all families:

First son is named after father's father
Second son- named after mother's father
Third son- named after the father

First daughter- named after mother's mother
Second daughter- named after father's mother
Third daughter- named after the mother

As others have noted, Scots were quite willing to reuse names of children that have died, so that can throw off the naming pattern.

Lastly, I have found it to be quite common to use the last name of the person one is named after as the middle name or to have the middle name be of a relative or other close person who has recently died. Between that and how commonly maiden names are recording, it's a nice change of pace from researching in so many other places!
  • Dave Watts

I have found that in my mothers family (Reid) that the eldest son always receives the surname of a certain illustrious scientist ancestor as his last given name. This has been perpetuated until the latest generation decided it just wasn't cool to do this!
  • Simone Kay

    Hi all

I am new and from South Africa. I am trying to biuld my husband's familytree. He is a Kay from Glasgow. With the help of Scotlandspeople and Familysearch I have managed to trace back about 6 generations, but I have no siblings for any of the ancestors. Are there anyone who have Kay's in their database?
  • Bobby Timson

Simone, have you looked at the Census on the Scotlands People site? If you look up the people you do know you sometimes get the list of the entire family to include siblings living at home.
  • Simone Kay

Thanks for that one. No, I have not done that, but will!
  • Cynthia A. Brewer-Dooley

Hello...My surnames are: McIntosh and Riddell. I will add more later, very excited to find this site.

    Hi,
I am researching a Campbell line starting with my great grandmother Iowinah Campbell b. 1846 in PA, USA; her father - Johathan Alfred b. 1806 also in PA; his father Matthew D. b. 1781 in Donegal, Ireland; his father Matthew b 1760 in Donegal, Ireland and finally to Scotland ... his father John b. 1720 in Argyll Shire; his father Allan b. abt 1685 in Ardchattan, Argyllshire; his father John b. abt 1660 in West Argyllshire.
I got most of my information from A History of the Campbell FAmily by John Carl Campbell @ 1991 and would like to know if it is in fact correct. I am fairly sure thru Matthew but after that I am having great difficulty finding confirmation. If possible, I would like to take the line further. I would appreciate any help I can get . Thanks
