This group is for anyone who is interested in the history of the parish of Buckland Brewer in Devon or who has ancestors who come from this parish. Some of the key surnames include Blight, Cole, Fulford, Heal, Ley, Stapledon and Squire
Good morning to the small, but very select group,
Serendipity is wonderful! It was only yesterday, as I was trying to extend the Rowcliffes of Merton (married into the Marshalls in 1784), that I found the name Rowcliffe in Buckland Brewer.
John Rowcliffe (perhaps x2 given the spread of dates) is shown in the list of Devon Freeholders.
Then today I find news of the Buckland Brewer group in my In-box.
All that I need now to cause my cup to become overfull is to find that one of you good people can show me a connection between Buckland Brewer and my Andrew/Anthony/William Rowcliffes in Merton.
Unlikely isn't it?
KR, Bob Marshall.
Hi Bob,
I can't help with the Rowcliffe Buckland Brewer/Merton link - however I do have information of the Marshalls of Buckland Brewer if anyone needs that. This group is very new and I won't have time to add much to it until the autumn. I will then start advertising it more widely so by then people will hopefully be more likely to make some connections.
My connection with Buckland Brewer is through an elder brother of one of my maternal 2xggm Elizabeth Ann KENT. His name is James KENT 1843-1903 born Westleigh, Devon.
In 1861 he was a carter/servant for William L C TUPLIN a farmer of 173 at Tythacott, Buckland Brewer.
1864 Married Ann LANG 1841-1922 from Buckland Brewer
1871 James and Ann were living in Parkham, Devon with 4 children
Their eldest son John KENT was born in Buckland Brewer in 1864.
Yes, that is my 3xg uncle James and his family. They were living in Barton Cottage in between the church and the vicarage in 1891 and in the village in 1901.
I'm searching for any information on the DACIE/DACEY/DACY. John DACEY was christened here 3 Sep 1637. He had siblings Mary (1639), Robert (1642) and Eliszebeth (1645), all christened in Buckland Brewer.
Their father was Robert DACEY and I think his wife was Ann.
If anyone knows anything about them I'd be v. interested to know! Many thanks.
My interest is in the Cole an Heal(e) families. My connection with buckland Brewer is through William Cole (which Janet and a couple of other people there helpe me with - thx again Janet). William and his wife Charity Heal are my 3xg-granparents who I believe lived in what is now Manning-Cole building. Just came across this site and thought I would join in and see what it is about.
If anyone is connected with either family please let me know.
Hi
Not sure what stage we were with the William Cole/Charity Heale story when we were last in contact. It now seems definate that they are connected with Richard and Mary Cole nee Wakely who married in 1719. This family seem to have owned what is now my house.
I am still working on getting the birth and marriage PRs of the Cole family members that I have as well as the ones you provided me. I did contact the registry office, but haven't gotten any yet. However, I do now have the banns document for William Cole and Charity Heal from a cousin in Toronto. I also have a birth document for their daughter Anne Cole from another cousin in Kitchener ON..
I am now wondering if the Cole and Manning families of Tithecott Mill ever intertwined? Do you or anyone else know, if so, I would appreciate very much being informed.
Hi, im am researching both the Ashton and Frain family of Buckland Brewer and surround. I have an 1861 Census of Henry and Ann Frain living at Tythacott, Buckland Brewer. Anyone else researching these families?
Hi - in Morris and Co.'s Commercial Directory and Gazetteer. 1870, there are the following entries for Tythecott:
BOND Samuel, miller
SMITH George, farmer, Palmers
TUPLEN Wiliam Lawrence C., farmer, Thythecott mill
Hi, i plan to visit Buckland Brewer soon as i only live in Hartland so it will be really interesting to see. My Frains were shown in Tythacott village in 1861 and again in 1881 so i would of presumed they hadnt moved in that time. They only made it as far as Putford after that, so never moved far!,
Hi all,
My LEMON ancestors lived in Buckland Brewer from about the mid 18c for around 100 years, they were also spread around the surrounding villages such as Frithelstock. Would love to hear from anyone related to or interested in this name. Also of the Barnstaple area.
One of my connections with Buckland Brewer is through my gr grandmother Bertha Chapple (she married James Churchill), but Bertha's father George Chapple born 1855 (he married Emily Braddon) and Bertha's gr grandfather Henry Chapple born 1804 (he married Rebecca Broom) were all from Buckland Brewer.
Would love to hear from anybody with connections to this family.
Hi Everyone, My connection with Buckland Brewer is through William Cole and Charity Heal; although my ancestor's death registry indicated her surname was Ale and one of his siblings listed it as Hale...I thought I'd just post in case others are interested in the same line :o) Thanks! Rhondda
William Kelly married Sarah Jane Fulford in Buckland Brewer and moved to Chelsea London where he became a manufacturer of carriages and also raised a family.
They returnedto Buckland Brewer about 1900 and died soon after.
