Hi MS Group! It is a good thing to find a group for Mississippi roots. I am researching my father's side, surname Crisp of Wilkinson County; and my husband's maternal ancestry, surname Johnson of Yalobusha County.
Willette, I will keep looking. Do you have any other information to go on. Such as the County in Mississippi your grandmother and grandfather came from. Which names did you find in the white relatives side? Do you think they came from same town in Mississippi or they met in Arkansas? Every information gained helps.

I am the eldest grand of Johnny L Sullivan of Laurel (Jones Cty) MS and wife Alice Britton, looking to find additional information, I will provide additional update once I reach my cousin who lived in my great-grandparents home along with my mother Dorothy Annette, aunt Precious, uncle John Lewis there in Laurel in or around 1949 thru 1950's.
I'm looking for information about my husband's grandmother. Her name was Mary Martha Smith "Mattie". She married first Thomas Hila James in Copiah County and second Luther Ernest Bailey in Lincoln County, MS. I am trying to find her parent's names. Some information gives her father as Joseph and her mother as Margaret Brooks. It looks as if she had a brother named Rowan and a sister who married a Parrott/Perritt.
She was born in 1877 and married very young the first time. She had two James children when she married Luther Bailey.
My husband also descends from the Vines Smith family who moved to Copiah County from Alabama. Vines daughter Sarah married Thaddeous Ferrell.
I'd love to find some connections to these families.
My families are mostly in Adams, Franklin, and Jefferson Counties. Among others, they are King, Dove, Dunbar, Stampley, and Swayze.
I'm looking for information about Francis M. Ewing. He was in the Civil War in Vicksburg and lived before and afterwards in Holly Springs, MS. he was born in KY abt 1826.
Hello! I'm researching my families the counties of Adams and Wilkinson, MS and into western Louisiana. The surnames I'm researching are Washington, Rounds, Thompson, and Galmore.
My Mississippi African American family was from the area of Water Valley near Oxford. They were the family of Marsh Reese and his wife Matilda Stein. Both were born enslaved in the mid 1800s. Her mother, Nellie Stein was in the household on the 1870 census for Yalobusha County. Matilda was said to have been born in Banner which is no longer a town. He is buried in Paris and she in Springdale. Any information or research tips would be greatly appreciated and I would be glad to assist in other's Mississippi research. I suggest trying the Educable Childrens List. Many of the schools in MS counties kept them. I have the letter my aunt wrote to Yalobusha County and their response stating that she had in fact been enrolled by her father in 1910. She had no birth certificate and was applying for Soc-Sec. Hope this helps someone.

My Grandfather (ROARK WINBORN) was born in Mississippi. I dont' know the area he was born in. Would appreciate any information on Winborns, Winburns, Winbornes and other variants of the surname. I am very willing to exchange info. Thanks
I am searching for more information on my great-grandmother - Lenorah Alice Deshazo (Disfuyo) who married Marion Frances McMullen.. My grandmother is Suetta McMullen Livingston. She was put in an orphanage in 1910, so I believe that is the year Lenorah died. I would like to find where she might be buried. I think it in either Webster or Grenada County.
My grandmother ; Ellen JOHNSTON (WINBORN) WAS BORN ON 1 JUL 1881 in Carroll County, MS. Another of my ancestors born in Tippah, MS. on 15 FEB 1842. His name was John D. WINBORN . Please get in touch if you have information on them or other members of the Winborn family. Thanks
I have found out so much news concerning my ancestor it dates back to my great-great great grand parents of (Anna Pearl Drish) Dellie & Ada Drish, great grand parents, John L & Anna Pearl Sullivan who lived at 604 S 7th Laurel MS, they had 5 children, Johnny, Margaret, Florestine, Woodrow, Dorothy(in which my mother was named after.
Hey everyone, I have just joined this group. Great Group! All of my ancestors(one's I can find info. on) are from South Mississippi. My 4th GreatGrandfather, Alexander Denny Callender(1755-Aft.1820) was in "Natchez Country", MS. territory as early as 1782. He later moved to Jefferson County. He married first Mary Coleman, Granddaughter of Rev. Samuel Swayze. They had six children of which most of the MS. Callenders come from. I grew up in Lincoln County, Brookhaven, MS. I am researching Callender, Meynard(Minyard), Newton, Carrell(Carroll, Caroll), Hoggatt, Furr, Ratcliff, Case, McRee, Summers, Falvey, Crawford, White.
I am struck by how far back most of you can trace your ancestry. Some even to 1690! Sadly, that is not the case for most Black Americans. We often hit that brick wall prior to 1870. In order to continue beyond that date we must identify the last slaveholder and hopefully some records that mentions slaves by name. Please if you have family records that would be of value to an African American researcher share them, donate them to an archive or post them online (preferably at www.afirquest.com) but do get them online. Someone is looking for a link to their heritage and you may hold the key to their past. I know it would be greatly appreciated. My personal brick walls are in Water Valley, Yalobusha County, MS.
I'm looking for any info on Joseph Washington Jordan born 1829 Mississippi Died btwn 1870-1880 married around 1850 lived in Neshoba,Leake and Madison Mississippi according to census. Census has his wife with four different names Permetta, Fernetta... or any info or any jordans in this group
I am researching ancestors who settled in Old Tishomingo Co., MS in the early 1800's. The main family lines I am researching are Helton, Parsons, Nunley and McCoy. I have made connections with cousins who live in the area.
I joined because my paternal ancestors are from MS. I have had very little success when I go to the MS archives. I haven't been able to go into the county seats yet. I am hoping someone on this board will see my surnames and can offer some help. My ancestors come from Amite, Lincoln and Pike County. Surnames are Alexander, Cotten, Wallace, Sa(u)nders. Other surnames that figure into the history are Anderson, Cain and Ames.
Could you be a little more specific about what surname goes with what County? There are a lot of Wallaces from Bogue Chitto, Lincoln County. I might could do some searches for you if I knew the Given names.
Thanks,
Claude Callender

I've done quite a lot of WEBB family history in and around Lafayette County (Oxford, Paris, etc.). Would be willing to share if anyone is researching this line.
It is important to remember that just because a person with the same surname as your ancestor lived in the county you are researching, do not assume they were related.
I am researching the descendants of Peter "Jake" Helton b. abt 1822 in TN & Thursey McCoy b. 1825 in TN. They married 27 Dec 1841 in Tishomingo Co., MS.

I did not recognize the name Dewey Helton. My Helton cousins did not recognize her as one of our relatives.
I started by searching for Dewey Helton on the Census Indexes. Dewey was listed as George D. Helton on the 1900 census living with her parents Jim & Winnie in Beat 1, Tishomingo Co.
She was listed on the 1910 Census in Iuka with her parents Jim & Winnie Helton. Dewey was born abt. 1899 in MS. Jim was b. abt. 1871 in MS. Jim's father was b. in GA and his mother was b. in AL.
After more research, I discovered that Jim was James Daniel Helton b. 18 Apr 1876 in Tishomingo Co. Jim's wife was Winnie Bell Busby b. 17 Nov 1880 in MO. They married 14 Feb 1897 in Tishomingo Co.

Sara Jane Spradlin b. 15 Jul 1842 in GA. This info was posted by a woman who was researching the her Province, Helton, & Busby family lines.

I am researching the surnames of Hyde, Feemster, Spann, Williams, Harmon, Dancy, Brookshire, Shanklin, Dew, Pippins, and Pipkins. The counties are Noxubee, Winston, and Lowndes, Mississippi.
Good morning Mississippi researchers. Is anyone doing community research in Wilkinson County, Mississippi in Woodville and surrounding localities? My research in that area has led to a migratory pattern from LA --> Wilkinson Co. --> Adams Co. Looking to find anyone who is researching. I have some contacts in Wilkinson county who have been helpful and the county historical society is doing a historical survey. I'll be heading to the area in early November and I'll be doing additional research. The surnames I've discovered in that area which are in my family tree are Moore, Barnes, and Washington.

Does anyone know of any good sites for early marriage, birth and death records for Mississippi? Family Search doesn't have them for this state and the Genweb websites for Miss. counties don't seem to be much help for 1800-1850 vital information.
