In case anyone was wondering the picture is of the North Devon coast at Hartland Quay, a treacherous spot and the scene of many shipwrecks!

I am looking for information on my Hawkins family. From 1851 thru 1881 I can find James and Jane Hawkins with their children (Thomas James Robinson, Charlotte, Clara and John) living in Devonport. After that time James and Jane Hawkins came to St. Louis, Mo USA. I believe Thomas died in Austrailia, Charlotte in Plymouth and Clara in Somerset. Charlotte married Thomas Leaman, Clara married John Weatherdon, Thomas married ? and all died young. John came to Missouri and married Lillie Coghill and died young but with one child where I have picked up the genealogy and I come through. Need help on finding the parents on James Hawkins and his wife Jane Robinson Hawkins. Hope this group can give me some ideas where to go next with research in Devon.

There doesn't seem to be any way to reply to a specific Comment - maybe queries about Devon ancestors should be posted under Discussions? I don't know if 'Discussions' allows for replies - we're all stumbling round in the dark in this new place!

Anyway, to answer Janice Marie Hartman:

To be sure of their parentage, you need their marriage certificate which should give the names and occupations of their fathers. FreeBMD (www.freebmd.org.uk) has the following entry:

    Marriages Sep 1844
HAWKINS James Stoke Daml 9 473
ROBINSON Jane Stoke Damarel 9 473

An unattributed 'postem' attached to the entry dated 08/07/2007 says 'James Hawkins married Jane Robinson on 21 Jul 1844 per marriage paper'.

To get the certificate go to the General Register Office (www.gro.gov.uk) and follow the instructions to order online. It costs 7GBP wherever you are in the world. When you have the names of the fathers, you may be able to identify James and Jane in the 1841 census and trace their baptisms.

I think it might work best if people started new discussions in the discussion forum. All the discussions on one topic or surname will then all be kept in the same place and will be easier to find.

    Hi
I have just created a group for the parish of Buckland Brewer. I'll be doing the same for Bulkworthy and Bucks Mills shortly.
I would like to get in touch with anyone with ancestry in those areas.

    Janet

I'll add links to your new groups when they're set up. If anyone else finds any other Devon groups let me know so that I can add them too.
  • Janet Few

I'll attempt to work out how to do the same!!
  • Debbie Kennett

Hi Janet, You need to use the group text box. Highlight the words you want to link and then click on the reel symbol in the editing toolbar. There seem to be an annoying pop-up that you have to clear before you can add the URL.
  • Janet Few

'Tis done! If I can do it anyone can! Maybe other OPCs will follow suit

I have just created a group for Bishops Nympton - my OPC Village and home to my Pincombe, Rowcliffe, Manning, Tapp, Blackmoore, and Snow families:

    http://www.genealogywise.com/group/bishopsnymptondevonhistoryandgenealogy
  • Debbie Kennett

Elizabeth, I've added your group. For future reference for everyone when you create a group it's a good idea to truncate the URL eg,

    http://www.genealogywise.com/group/bishopsnympton

    rather than

    http://www.genealogywise.com/group/bishopsnymptondevonhistoryandgenealogy

It'll then be much easier to pass the URL on to other people.
  • Janet Few

Oh bother that was a sensible idea - is there anyway of altering the names for the groups I've already done? Bucks Mills and Bulkworthy (with ridiculously long names) now added.
  • Debbie Kennett

If no one has joined it might be easiest to delete the group, copy and paste your formatted copy and start again!

I am looking for the birth town of Thomas Gribble Bevan who was born in Devon in 1831 according to his tombstone which is in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. I have searched many sites but cannot find any information. Can anyone help, please!
  • Sonia Turner

    Hi Julia,

I have just explored Ancestry and there is one Public Member's tree with the following information.

Thomas Gribble Bevan born 1833 Lewtrenchard, Devon.

His father is Roger Bevan ( 1801-1842) and mother Mary Gribble ( 1796-1846) both born in Lewtrenchard also.

Thomas appears to have three siblings. Silas ( 1827-1865), Seth ( 1829-1888) and Jane ( 1831-).

    Hope this helps.

Can do some more research if you would like.

    Best wishes

    Sonia Turner

I've now set up my final group http://www.genealogywise.com/group/northdevonemigrants for all those who have ancestors who emigrated from North Devon. I am collecting biographical information and photographs of as many as I can.
