Do you have ancestors from Ontario, Canada West or Upper Canada? These are all the province of Ontario in Canada. This group is for those interested in the history and genealogy of Ontario.
Sandy.. Melina not Melinda Jacques d/o Joseph .. ;) was born in Quebec and moved to (memory blank) in Ontario near Windsor I believe. My db is on another computer!
My husband's grandparents were married at St. Hugue's parish in Sarsfield, Cumberland Twp. Ontario in June 1922. At the time it was Russell county. I have looked at the parish records on microfilm about 20 years ago at a FHC, and have searched Ancestry.com, but no official record of the marriage seems to exist. Before he died, grandfather's youngest brother told me he remembered attending the wedding. He would have been 8 yrs old at the time. How is it possible for there not to be a record? Are there any other resources?
My grandfather's family was from Ontario. I'm researching SUCKLING, STULL, ROGERS, WHITMORE, SERVOS in the Niagara region. I'm also searching for FARRELL in Perth county.
My great grandfather John was born in Puslinch Twp., Wellington Co, Ontario in 1853 to Duncan McNabb and Hannah Cameron. I cannot trace Duncan further back, but Hannah was the daughter of "Castle" John Cameron and Annabelle McLennan who came from Ullapool, Ross-shire Scotland. John came to Michigan in 1879. I wish to find out more about these families.
I have three Canadian born ancestors all born in Ontario - my mother, her father and his mother in the London, Ontario area. My surnames of interest: ROUTLEDGE, GRAY, PINCOMBE, BULLER and BLAKE. All the rest of my ancestors were born in England. I have quite a bit of information on these families including their ancestral locations and their migration stories.
I tend to describe my family as very North American. The Hillmans today are a mixture of English(Hillman), Scottish(May, McKay, Turner, Steele), Cornish(Thomas), and Mennonite(Shoemaker). We can be found in Elgin County, Middlesex County(London& Mos township), Lambton County, Sanilac County in Michigan. Ancestors have come from England, Scotland, Switzerland, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
Elaine, you say you are looking for a 1922 marriage record. Can you give us the bride and groom's names and ages? Perhaps the group can help find them!
It is possible the marriage was not registered, but there should at the least be a church record. Catholic events were often not sent on to be registered - was it a Catholic wedding?
Hi all, the marriage and death images on ancestry.com are great for Ontario. I went searching last year and I got hit after hit on the Keffer and Puterbaugh/Putterbaugh lines.
Yes, Lorine, it was a Catholic wedding. As I stated, it was at St. Hugue's in Sarsfield, Ontario. At the time, it was most likely either Russell, or Russell-Prescott County. I've even viewed the microfilmed records from the parish, about 20 years ago, and was unable to locate it there at the time. That's why I'm so frustrated with it. I've even checked the Drouin records available at Ancestry.com.

It's a French-speaking parish, and one time when I sent a note mentioning the "English" button on the parish website didn't work, I got a message that it was because French is the language spoken by parishioners. It was a bit snippy. I don't know how receptive they'd be to any inquiries. So, I've left them alone.
My connection to Ontario is my ancestor Jacob SNYDER and his wife Nancy ESMAY/ISMAY. They died about 1825-26 and are both buried in Ernestown, Midland Dist., Ontario. Jacob was from a Palatine family (Schneider) who emigrated to New York. During the Revolutionary War they were sympathetic to the British and migrated north and then into Canada. Their son, Isaac, returned to the U.S., and I descend from him; but I believe that other sons remained in Canada. I would love information on this family. Nancy Esmay/Ismay Snyder is a dead end for me.
My husband's family came over from Scotland with the Lanark Society Settlers in 1821. Most of his family stayed in Lanark County and some went to Renfrew County. I am willing to do look-ups from the material and research that I have already done. The Angus family married into several families that had also arrived from Scotland via the Lanark Society Settlers.
