    :) that's great!
  • Sandy Monza

I am researching family members who settled in Western Pennsylvania, i.e., Allegheny and Beaver Counties. Names I am researching are Gahles, Gehles, Troeter, Miller, Snowden
  • Vicki Koller Hartman

I am researching my and my husband's family. We are concentrated in Adams, Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton County, (late 1700's to mid or early 1900's), however I also show signs of being in Montgomery, Northumberland, York, Bucks, Philadelphia county. The list of names is long. My paternal line is Koller, Manwiller, Hiester, Mertz, Merckel, Kirby, Hottenstein, and is focused in the Fleetwood/Reading/Kutztown area of Berks county. My maternal side is the same area as well as Lehigh county. Adam(s), Fritzinger, Dietrich, George. My husband's paternal line is focused in Adams County, PA with Hartman, Oyler, Stoops, Bushey/Buschi, Arendt, Rice, Lady, Knouse, and many many others. My husband's maternal line is in primarily Northampton county with names including, Albert, Bitz, Heimer, Brinker, Ackerman, Hahn, and others. I have also started DNA testing on my husband's Hartman line. (I Haplogroup).

I actually have family on the far eastern half of the state and far western half of the state -- Reading/Adamstown/Reamstown and Pittsburgh.

Does anyone have any Heilman family in their tree?
  • Sandy Monza

I have a Heilman from Pittsburgh, originally from Donnersdorf Bavaria.
  • Caro Nally

    Really?!
I'm looking for my grandfathers family. He was born in Reading, Henry Conrad Heilman, but his father, Henry Conrad Heilman Sr, was born in Pittsburgh. His father was Harris B Heilman and his wife was Matilda. Supposedly she was N.A. but I doubt that since the story is that she was a princess.
Anyhow, does any of that sound familiar at all? Harris is the last person I have and I can't seem to find out anything more about them. I really would love to find them. My grandfather died when my mother was a child so I never met him and I was never able to ask him all these questions.
Thanks for any information you can give me!
  • Sandy Monza

To my knowledge, my ancester Elizabeth Heilman was the only one to leave Germany and come to Pittsburgh. She married Mathias Gehles from a neighboring village in Germany. Soon after coming to Pittsburgh in 1857, he enlisted in a German speaking unit in the Civil War and was killed in Freeman's Ford Virginia in Aug 22, 1862. My information on Elizabeth came primarily from the Pension records.
  • Caro Nally

Hmm .. Harris was born in 1833 in Pittsburgh (forgot to mention the date) so I guess they wouldn't be the same family, at least not immediate family. Oh well. The information I have on Henry Sr's parents comes from his birth certificate, which I found on Familysearch.org. I've been to my grandfather's grave and his father's grave since they are both in Reading. I just really have no idea how to find out more information on this family. I feel I've exhausted almost everything. Oh well. Back to the drawing board I guess!
Thanks anyway. I greatly appreciate it!!
  • Sandy Monza

I understand that Heilman is a very common name. I have not been able to get any information before 1830. Sorry.
  • Caro Nally

Really? Interesting. I didn't know that. I started a group on the Heilman surname but so few people have joined it that I just assumed no one else was interested and that it wasn't too popular. Hmm .. I'll have to do some more digging. I'll let you know if I come across your Elizabeth, though.
  • Kate Steere

    Hi Caro-
Just taking a quick look on the 1850 census, I find a "Horris Heilman" born 1835 in PA, living in Philadelphia, parents(possible) William and Rebecca, with other children Clara, Emma, William. Anna(who I'm assuming all to be 'Horris's'
siblings. There is also a 19 year old Henry Heilman living with them, who was a cabinet maker. It appears that William the 'father' was a flour inspector.

  • Linda J. Guy

I'm researching the in the Eastern part of the state, Philadelphia area. Looking for parents of James M. Hickman married to Susan Schrank. I only know James father was also a James Hickman, DOB about 1774. Any other information on this couple would be very much appreciated.

I currently live in Bedford County PA and am willing to do research needed for others in my county.
  • Caro Nally

Kate - that is awesome! I'll have to check it out! Thank you so much. It certainly would be great to finally find that line. They are the ones with which I have the most trouble.

PS: I went to the Cocalico historical society to do some research on my Reddig and Ream family. And guess what I found out?! You remember the guy after whom Reamstown was named, Johann Eberhardt Riehm? He's my seventh great grandfather!! How fascinating? I had no idea. I'm so excited to learn that new information. I didn't have the time to copy all the pages from the book they had there but I'll be back on Saturday to do that. This is so cool!

    Heidi

Do you have a Feietta Rauch in your tree? She was born in 1819 and died between 1853 and 1857. She was married to Samuel Swoyer and had seven children with him. (After she died, he remarried and had eight more children!!) The children of Feietta and Samuel were Caroline, John, James, Jacob, Charles, Maria Anna, Olivia.

    Sound familiar at all?
  • Caro Nally

    Katy

So I found that census report. The problem is I can't find anything else. I found a death notice for a William Heilman in 1870, having him born in 1811, which is entirely possible. All it says though is that he was white and married and a farmer. That's it. I can't seem to find them at all in 1860. I'd love to say this is the right family, but I just can't be sure. Oh well. I can at least save the census report for later. I might find something then.

  • Cynthia A. Brewer-Dooley

Hello....Westmoreland County seems to be the hot bed for my Brewer family, with my 3 great grandfather being born there: James W. Brewer, he moves to Tuscarawas County, OH., then on to Clay County, IN. With him in his moves there were others from Westmoreland, that moved to Indiana. They had surnames of Armel/ Arnel, McCurley, Arnold, who I have traced to PA. These families married into the Brewer Family.
    Any comments or matches?
  • Caro Nally

How about FAUST and HAAS? Is anyone looking into them at all?
  • Linda Smith

    Hi,
I am happy to find this group with an interest in PA genealogy.
I am researching Campbell, Wray, Postlethwaite, Wright, Douglas and Cartilidge ... mostly in Huntingdon Co.
  • Caro Nally

    Linda:

What Campbell family?! My great grandmother was a Campbell and I haven't been able to find anything beyond her parents.

Elva Campbell was born 23 March 1890 and died September 1981. She was the daughter of John G Campbell and Martha (Black?)
  • Kate Steere

    Hi Caro--
What evidence do you have for Elva?
  • Jim Avery

My PA Names include Avery, West, Collins, Ayers, Peters, Wolford Wohlford Kleckner Snook Kraemer, Koch, Bartels, Kleffman, Ferguson and Allen. I am especially interested in Wolford-Wohlford anywhere. I am also especially interested in Avery and West in the Bradford Co PA area.
  • Caro Nally

Hmm .. I believe I have her death record and I have a census report from 1900
  • Caro Nally

    Katy:

I found William Heilman and Rebecca Kreiser on someone's Ancestry account. William's birth date in that tree is the same as the birth date on William's birth certificate, which I found on familysearch.org. So I did find them. BUT .. and this a huge but .. the ancestry account tree doesn't have any children listed for them so I have no idea if this is right family. But hopefully it is. I have no idea how to find out though since I don't have enough information to request a birth certificate. Hmm I'm sure some more investigation will help. William was born in Lebanon so I'm sure the historical society will have something on them since apparently Heilman is a common name there.

Thanks for finding that census report for me. I greatly appreciate it!!
  • Kate Steere

:) you're welcome! I'm sure it will piece itself together if its right.
Do you know when Elva Campbell married? SHe would have been about 20 in 1910, so she might be under a different name by then if she married.

    K
  • Caro Nally

She married in 1912 to Elmer Redcay. I can't find the certificate (long story, I think they went to MD to do it) but the 1920 census says they've been married for 8 years .. They are both still living with their parents in 1910.
  • Linda Smith

    Hi Caro,
My Campbell line starts with my great grandmother Iowinah Campbell b. 1846 in PA, USA; her father - Johathan Alfred b. 1806 also in PA; his father Matthew D. b. 1781 in Donegal, Ireland; his father Matthew b 1760 in Donegal, Ireland; his father John b. 1720 in Argyll Shire, Scotland; his father Allan b. abt 1685 in Ardchattan, Argyllshire, Scotland; his father John b. abt 1660 in West Argyll shire. I have not run across an Elva Campbell - sorry, but if I do I will pass it on. Linda
  • Caro Nally

Thanks Linda .. greatly appreciate it!
  • Gen Story Girl

The family lines I am researching in PA are Stagner (York Co), Bishop (Bishoff) (York & Adams Co), Etter and Scott.
  • Heidi Walcutt

    Caro,

"Do you have a Feietta Rauch in your tree? She was born in 1819 and died between 1853 and 1857. She was married to Samuel Swoyer and had seven children with him. (After she died, he remarried and had eight more children!!) The children of Feietta and Samuel were Caroline, John, James, Jacob, Charles, Maria Anna, Olivia.

I looked at the information I have but none of those names show up. Do you happen to have information on Feietta's siblings or parents?
  • Caro Nally

    Heidi

I don't, since the information was given to me by a cousin and our family is off the Swoyer line .. but I will definitely look into it. I'm trying to get all the spouses' parents' names at least but that isn't exactly the easiest of things to do. (I want my Register Forms to be as detailed as possible, so I want to be able to say So-and-So married So-and-So [ daughter of whomever] on this day etc etc)

I'll let you know what I find!
  • Dianne Welch

Dianne, you might try the " Revolutionary War Ancestor" group. They could probably help you out with DAR since a lot of them seem to belong to DAR or SAR.

I am researching PA ancestors in the Lancaster area. Particularly Lancaster borough, Salisbury, Earl, and Intercourse areas. Names I am researching are Shee/Shay, Cron, Biegler, Rehrer/Rohrer, Mowrey, Lafferty, Troop and possibly Pool and Muldoon.
Also looking for information on Bridget, Catherine, Martin, and Patrick Ford siblings who immigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1884. They were without any adults so I am trying to discover who their parents were.
I am not in the area so I do not have the historical society or cemeteries nearby.

  • Keith McKain

Caro said "apparently Heilman is a common name there." - Check out the 1870 Census for North Annville Twp, Lebanon County (18/251) (look up Cyrus Heilman - age 22) -- on the page there are 25 Heilmans (only 40 persons on the page)!!!! Even a town nearby called Heilmandale!!
  • Keith McKain

    Hello,
I am interested in contacting anyone researching McKain, Riale, Erisman, Leiphart, Ulrich, Heilman, Horn, Stiely, Meyer, or Wilhelm in Lancaster, Lebanon, Chester, York or Schuylkill Counties. What I know is shown on my website (below).
Additions/corrections/suggestions are welcome. I will help anyone that I
    can!
