Hmmmm. I didn't find exactly what I'm looking for. I had heard that gg grandma was put in an Orphan Home in Jacksonville, Ill. in 1867, at age 7, when her mom died. There is no orphan home in Jacksonville as far as I can tell, only a school for blind & deaf children (which gg grandma was not) and a home for the insane (which I don't believe she was). The nearest one is Normal, Ill. I can't get any info on who might have been there in the 1860's & 1870's. I saw a link about the Orphan Trains, and since gg grandma (Jennie Etta Bixby born 27 Feb, 1860 in Bath, Mason, Ill.) showed up in Kansas in her 20's and lots of kids were sent to Kansas, I thought maybe she might have been one of these orphans. But when I went to print out the form to BUY the search, I couldn't even fill out the form, as I don't know (if she WAS an orphan on the Orphan Train) if Bixby is her birth name or if the name was given her later. And don't know if in fact she was a rider on the train. I only recently came across the last name of Bixby through another ancestry user. We had only known gg grandma as Jennie E. So I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas on what I might do next to find out more?

Checked 1860 census, and Mary's Husband was James, they had children Harry/Henry, Albert, Eloise, Lucy; and SMITH, George,18; BROWN, James, 16; McCOMBS, Martha,16. So these must have been children they'd taken in and had left by the 1870 census when they had Jennie living with them.

Hey Lisa! WOW! Thanks for the info! I have the 1880 Census, and I thought it listed her as a servant in the Shepherd home! I would love to see any more images you may have involving her! I am having trouble finding her dad who I believe is named Dr. Charles Bixby from NY. He supposedly died in Andersonville Prison during the Civil War, but I can find no record of him having been there. I can't find any records at all in Ill. for Charles Bixby. His wife (and Jennie's mom) was Malinda McCormac, who remarried to an Isaac Brown and had a kid with him, then she died in 1867, and I have heard Jennie was sent to an orphanage in Jacksonville, Ill. I wonder why her stepdad dumped her?

It said she was listed as a house servant.

Looks like Bixby sustained injuries from the assault and taking of Arkansas Post. Since Bixby was a doctor, I wonder what his role in the battles were? Did he just shoot and fight, or did he care for the wounded? He was the only casualty from his unit in that battle.

Ok, you geniuses! Since you've kicked down one of my worst brick walls, I might as well ask you about something particularly PA. Do you know anything about the Walters family? My gg grandpa Andrew Jackson Walters (born 1828 in Fairfield, OH) is kinda another brick wall for me. I have been trying to discover his parents, and have come up with a mess instead! I guess there are lots of Walters around the western PA/ eastern OH area. The ones I have as his folks are Andrew Walters (born 1776 in Fayette Co, PA & died abt 1830 in DeWitt Co, Ill.) and Elizabeth Dillon (born abt 1775 in Fayette Co, PA death unk). My problem is when I went to look for the older Andrew's folks! The only ones I thought would come close to being them is Andrew Walters (born 1752 in German, Fayette, PA and died abt 1830 in DeWitt, Ill) and his wife Sarah Weedman (born abt 1722 in OH & died 1809). Sound like the same Andrew, but the second one has an earlier birth date, and a MUCH older wife, who couldn't have been Andrew Jackson Walters' mom, as he wasn't born until 1828, after Sarah had died. I have called about 25 different places in the Fairfield courthouse in Ohio trying to find a birth record for Andrew Jackson Walters, but was told that they didn't keep records that far back. I can't find him in church records either. So do you guys have any suggestions how I can untangle this mess I've made of my Walters line?

"Suses County"?? If you mean Sussex - that is in Delaware (if North America) - not PA (except very early on - well before the Revolutionary War).
