When I did a quick check, there was a Stephen Haines from Grey South, around the Dundalk area. I found him in 1871 Census for Canada and he would have been 19 at this time. His siblings listed were Sarah (15), John (12), Annie (10) and his father was Benjamin (48 years). Would you be able to supply me with a few more details so it might help in the search? thanks so much Jo-Ann

Liz - I went back to the 1871 Census records and there were several other Haines living in that area too. I can send that info later if you like - if you think this might be part of your connection. But this family didn't appear to live very long at this address though.

The information about Perth is most helpful - I will continue on seeing what I can come up with. There is one gentleman who spends some time in this area who has a good knowledge of one part of the Haines family so perhaps more information might come from this source.

It is me again. I did one quick search and wondered if this site might be helpful to you. When I went to look up Joseph Haines born between 1725-1729 in Tyron County, New York, USA and died between 1805-1815 in Canada, (according to Ancestry.com), I discovered on "One World Tree" at the very top of the list, Joseph Haines and this site took the history back to Aug. 24, 1614 to the birth of John Richard Haines who was born in Boxgrove, Sussex, England (death 1639 in Northamptonshire, Eng.) I only searched the USA site because I noticed that Joseph Haines was born in Tyron County. But perhaps some of these contributors to this One World Tree might be of some assistance to you.

When I had a few minutes Liz, I sent off an e-mail to the Chesley Library seeing if they had any more details about Nicholas VanSlyke who died there on Dec. 14, 1884. I hope I have the correct person. Will let you know if I hear anything back. This Nicholas VanSlyke was born around 1799-1800 in the USA

That is super. I haven't heard back from the Chesley Library yet, but at least I have a better idea where to check and the names to look for. Chesley isn't too far from us either - if I should get a chance to get over to check their archives, I would be most pleased to forward any info along to you..
