Hello Irma - I have been busy researching in Chaska.  I did find one burial spot; there are others in N. Minneapolis.  My search has compelled me to ask why the immigrants were drawn to leave their home and come over to MN in particular.  Can you add your thoughts about what may have been going on in Netherlands, Switzerland, or Germany in the 1850's?  I know folks came over seeking land, however, there was also deadly fighting in MN with Native Americans and I doubt that the immigrants knew what they were getting in to.  What was going on in European countries to drive them out?   Also, can you tell me briefly what route immigrants took to get to Minnesota once they arrived in America?  To New York and then the Great Lakes possibly?  Or just to New York, then by land to MN?  I am also seeking your advice on reputable organizations in Germany and Switzerland to contact for genealogy info.  Thank you,  colleen macfarlane

Irma - 3rd attempt - I have continued with my research on Kerker Family who settled in Chaska, MN.  Have found a gravesite for Agnes Kerker, who killed herself at age 21.  I was unable to find details via newspaper accounts.  I am compelled to wonder what was going on in Germany and Switzerland in 1850's and 1860's to drive people out?  and why MN?  I know it was promise of land, but at what price?  they paid for it with harsh conditions, and fighting with Native Americans - and I believe they did not know what they were getting in to.  Can you offer some insight about what was going on and why choice of MN?  Also, what was the typical route to Minnesota once they arrive in New York.  By land across the USA or by boat via the great lakes to Northern Minnesota.  Also, can you recommend a reputable research organization for Germany and Switzerland?  I want to research great great grandparents who did not come to America.  colleen macfarlane
