    I see you're looking for Schlams. Mine also spelled their name Schlamm.They came to the U.S. from Germany/Poland/Preuben before the Civil War.There was a New York branch and a San Francisco branch.Any connection?

    I just looked on Ancestry and found Eva Shlam in the Census in Philadelphia,and once I knew she spelled her name without the "c" I looked her up again.There is a listing for her born about 1824 in the Index of "The Philadelphia Jewish Exponent"!! Too bad we aren't at the IAJGS Conference right now or we could. look it up.See Ancestry.com or Jewish Gen to see how to get a copy. If you could find it,it would answer a lot of questions.
