IM  TRYING TO TRACE MY GREAT GRANDFATHER JOSEPH AMBRAIZITIS. I KNOW HE LEFT LITHUANIA AROUND 1902, 1903. HE WAS BORN IN VILNIUS REGION OR MAYBE JURBARKAS AS I HAVE LEARNT A FAMILY WITH THE SAME SURNAME LEFT FROM JURBARKAS AT AROUND THE SAME TIME. I HAVE CONTACTED THE ARCHIVES BUT THEY COULD NOT HELP DUE TO CHURCHES AND RECORDS BEING DESTROYED DURING THE WAR. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF RECORDS WERE MAYBE MOVED AND HELD SOMEWHERE ELSE. ANY HELP APPRECIATED.

Have you tried looking up the name UMBRUS as it is a derivative of the name.

You should try Scotland and English passenger lists as most Lithuania went via those countries

Other Names for the town are :

Jurborg, Jurburg, Yurberig (Yiddish)

Jurbarkas, Yurbarkas (Lithuanian)

Georgenburg (German)

If your family has a Jewish Heritage, I can refer you to some Genealogical sites that may help.
