I am researching my ancestors who came from Rannoch. I am particularly intersted in how the Cummins came to be in Rannoch as it is a name originally from Aberdeenshire. They were not wealthy nor landed folk. I was in Rannoch two years ago and was sad to know that there are no people of that last name there now. The last one, a James Cumming, with whom I had corresponded in Crieff several years before, was desceased. My people lived in and around Innerhaddon and Aulich. My 3x great grandaprents were Alexander Cummins and Mary Menzies and their son Allen, my 2x grandfather emigrated to Canada in the early 1800s. Are there any school records about? I've got rent rolls for the confiscated properties taken over by the Crown after the '45. I have not ,however, been able to find anything with Allen's name on it except in the christening dates of the church at Fortingall. I doubt that my family would have been able to attend church as the distance from ther home was prohibitive. Were people baptized by deacons in the church who travelled to the outlying communities? Were there provisions for schooling of the crofter's children in the early 1800s? How long ago was the Gaelic still spoken in the area? Whgen did handfasting stop? I would appreciate knowing any of the history of Rannoch at that time. I currently have Alexander Stewart's book about Fortingall, A Highland Parish, as well as some publications by a Mr. Cunningham about the area. Should anyone be able to share more information about the 1700-1850s in Rannoch and the lives of the common people, I would be most appreciative. I teach in Dubai during the school year and have only internet access to help me in my family history pursuits
