ethnic backgrounds of surnames
I am in need of a good site to research the ethnic background of several surnames. Families were in Germany prior to 1800s. Any ideas?

What do you mean by ethnic? do you means origins? Have you tried Y (male line,surnames)DNA through a surname web-site such as www.one-name.org
I expect to find north europeans with my surname.

May I ask what surnames are you researching? My grandparents surname is Heilig which is a german surname and my grand dad is multi racial.
If someone sends you info regarding a site, please let me know.
