KIDD connections

I am struggling to research my grandfather, William Kidd - a very common name! I have found his death record which infers that he was born around 1878 but am unsure where. I believe he married Alice Mabel Pitman in late 1905 in St Thomas, Devonshire. Their first child was born in Devon in 1906 but by 1920, when my father was born (birth certificate indicates my grandfather was a blacksmith) they were living in Preston, Lancashire.

I am looking for anyone else researching the KIDD family in the UK with possible connections OR any ideas on how to narrow my search for my grandfather.
