Missing great grandfather

I am searching for my great grandfather, Berend Borgers.  Berend was born on 14 January 1857 in Ede, Gelderland, Netherlands.  He was united in marriage with Hermina van Beek on 12 November 1881 in Ede.  He and his family arrived at Ellis Island 21 October 1892.  Their final destination was Alton, Iowa.  I know he passed away shortly after arriving in the States but do not know when nor where.  Received a hint from a relative that he may have passed away en-route to Alton.  Any suggestions where to look/search if he passed away on the way to Alton?
