name changes

my grandparents stopped using their lithuanian surname of ambrazaites and replaced it with kennedy they were married under ambrazaites but buried as ambrazaites known as kennedy. they had not done this via deed pole yet ambrazaites does not appear on birth certs after my fathers generation only kennedy. has anyone else encountered something similar or have a theory  as to why they would do this.
