New York State Archives Information Leaflet #2
I am a resident of New York State [although not a native] and have learned a little about how to research within the political subdivisions of the State. The political division is of importance to those who wish to research ancestors who lived or worked in New York State at some period in their lives.
New York City
New York City, although a political subdivision of New York State, maintains its own records, both current and historic. None of these records are publically accessible through New York State agencies, libraries, or archives. New York City is comprised of five boroughs [Dutch designation] or counties [English designation]. It is okay to refer to the five boroughs by either designation, but care should be taken when researching to give the proper designation:

Brooklyn ~~~~~~~~~~~ Kings County ~~~~~~~~~~ Borough of Brooklyn
Manhattan ~~~~~~~~~~ New York County ~~~~~~~ Borough of Manhattan
Queens ~~~~~~~~~~~~Queens County ~~~~~~~~ Borough of Queens
Staten Island ~~~~~~~~ Richmond County ~~~~~~~Borough of Staten Island
First Tip: The Boroughs of New York City are not 'boros' and the use of that designation can lead to not getting the information you are looking for. There are several large colleges in Albany and a student from anywhere in the United States or from abroad may be assigned to complete your research request. That student may not know that your use of the word 'Boro' equates with 'Borough'.
Second Tip. Direct your inquiry, where possible, to the apropriate agency. Leaflet #2 [shown] will assist you in determining the appropriate agency with which to log a request for information. The names and addresses on Leaflet #2 may be outdated, but you will be re-directed to the appropriate address. The importance of Leaflet #2 is that it gives a summary of the records that are available.
