Thanks, I do have all that. I am looking for a document that shows the link of Michael Christian and his son Henry. like a will, record of birth...anything
I would think there would be a DAR document floating around somewhere that Henry would link them? I do have his Revolutionary War pention record, but it's not in there.
You might not find a record of birth. But surely in all the above records there's a hint somewhere that Michael C. Shofner was his father....like the family tree of someone else for example. Look up all the records on all his children...they were bound to mention grandfather somewhere.
Henry shofner who married Chloe/Clara Hart was not a son of Michael Shoffner Sr (Johann Michael Schaffert).
I'm a direct descendant of Michael Shofner/Margaretha Fogleman. My grandmother was Mary Emma Shofner. Her line went back this way: Robert Christopher-Wilson Brown-Christopher-Martin-Michael.
My interest is in Catherine Cooke. Please tell me where the name Roundtree comes from. She was only 18 when she married Martin Shofner, so I doubt that she had been married before, and that name isn't on most other genealogical sites..
I have another question: Can someone tell me how to view a copy of Martin and Catherine's marriage bond. in Duplin County, NC? There would have been a bondsman's signature on it, and that would have been a close relative, so it should be a clue as to her family.
How do you think Martin and Catherine met since Duplin county is quite a ways from Alamance County? She must have been brought up in Duplin, because that's where they married. If so, who were her parents?
I think that the man we are looking for was the one who 3 Feb 1779 signed ‘a petition to the General Assembly from the inhabitants of Duplin County asking that no part of Duplin County be annexed to any new county or to any existing county’;[1] was taxed in Duplin county 1783[2]; was the best man and George Huffman and Betsey Shoffner’s 15 Aug 1804 Orange County wedding[3]; and 20 Feb 1808 purchased or mortgaged for £100 a slave Peggy from Peter M Fogleman Sr.[4]
Family history says her father was John Cook. Also that she was a descendant of Francis Cooke of the 'Mayflower' (which I don't believe, I think we are looking for someone who was an ethnic German, a Johannes Koch).
I'm looking at 3 John Cooks in 1783 Duplin 'John of Isle Creek', 'John on Maxwell' and 'John on S Creek'. Today Island Creek and Maxwell Mill Pond are in Duplin; South Creek is in Beaufort County. In which district were these places in 1783? In 1784-1786 Duplin there was John of Stallin's District, of Kenan's District and of Southerland district and John Cooke in Stallin's District. I'm ruling out John of Kenan's District as this was a young family, husband not old enough to have had a daughter of marriagable age. 1790 there were 2 John Cooks and John Cook Sr in Wilmington District, Duplin. John Sr might be the John Cook (William, Reuben, William, William Philip, Richard) that was b 1714 Isle of Wight VA died 1799 Duplin and married a Mary.

Actually, her being Roundtree makes sense, because it would explain how Martin met her. She could have been a young bride living in Alamance County, and when her husband died she might have gone back to her parents in Duplin, and then Martin went there to marry her. Family records say she was from Alamance. She couldn't have been married very long to her 1st husband, because she had no child, and they usually had a child in the 1st year of marriage, and we can agree she was fertile, since she later had 10 children. She could have become a Lutheran after marriage to Martin.
I was unable to open the marriage record.
Their children's names were English and they married non-German-sounding spouses. I think the children's names could be a clue as to her family members. There's a John and a Margaret ( after Margaret MacRae?)
I am intrigued by the Henry Cook Jr. who witnessed Michael's will. He must have been a relative, and his father must have been Henry Cook, Sr. He might have been Catherine's brother or cousin or even her father. And he must have moved to Alamance County by then, also. And Christina Cook--had Catherine's whole family moved to Alamance ?
My father was Jordan Floyd Watson. His father (my grandfather) was called "Jord" pronounced "Jerd" , not "Joe". Clyde was James Clyde. I never heard Lois called "Lo". The last one was Mary Jordine. she died in 2011. Most of them were called by their middle names, which I assume was a southern custom. I have extensive information about all of them if you want it.
Many of these sites call her Catherine Roundtree Cooke. That doesn't sound like she was born Cooke. Rather, it sounds like Roundtree was her maiden name. and Cooke the name of her 1st husband. .Or that Roundtree was her middle name, which would have been odd for a girl at that time. Or that she was the child of her mother's first marriage , and Cooke was her stepfather--hence two last names. In any case, it's very curious.
Michael Christian Shoffner and Anna Margaretha Fogleman were my 5th great grandparents;
4th - Martin Shofner, Jr and Philabena Duirr
3rd - Daniel Shofner and Elizabeth Warren
2nd - Nelson Walton and Marticia Shofner
