Asaph COLEGATE was born in Baltimore and fought with the Maryland Line and received a pension and land grant for land in Virginia, now West Virginia. He migrated to Huntingdon County Pa. untill around 1816 and then went to WV. His children were born in Huntingdon County. Birth records don't go back that far. Am trying to get confirmation for his daughter Nancy Colegate Welsh. He is a Patriot that is not listed in the DAR. Iam the first to try and get him in. If anyone has any suggestion where I might look for her I would appreciate it. Dianne Welch

I would suggest trying Rootsweb World Connect their are all family trees. Another suggestion is try to post a message on Ancestry or Rootsweb to see if someone might have some information for you.
It looks like you have already gotten very good advice. If, for some reason you don't find what you need, post another question. From what I have read you can go after proof several different ways.
How can you go after proof different ways? I have all my births and marriages and deaths down to his daughter Nancy and can't find a birth certificate for her. She was born in Huntingdon County, Pa. I called them and their births don't go back to 1790. i'm about ready to give up. I was told the DAR Rep. would help me. They have access to more documents and sites than I do, but is not happening. no help at from their Rep. Dianne
There are many way of going to get proofs.
You can use census records, wills, marriage records, land records etc.
Do you have anything that proves that Nancy is his daughter?
Is Nancy going to be patriot daughter?
Im surprise nobody hasnt gotten back in touch with you on this matter.
Dianne
Do you have Nancy's marriage record and death record? If they mention her father Asaph then thats all the proof you will need sweetie. You will not need her birth cerifticate for her at all.
All you need is proof that Asaph Colegate is her father.
I found his pension papers last night If your interested sweetie.

I have all I need for him. Got it off of footnote. Too bad she didn't have some documents. I have census from 1800 and 1810 with Asaph Colegate in Huntingdon County, Pa. of course no other names, but the children are in the age range of Nancy and sibblings. dianne
She died in 1860 in Marion County have looked for her death certificate. I even know what little town she was in. Her marriage was in huntingdon county, Pa. no record. I have wills by her husband deeds no reference to maiden name. Her father and mother lived across from her for 3 or 4 census. She named a daughter after her mother. Her son was a witness for her Patriot father in his application for Pension One of her sons named a son after him, Asaph her mothers name was Rosanna both not common names. Her father was in the census with her living together in 1850, her as a widow and him as a 87 year old widower. I know he is her father. I'm going to try and find a will. If he had one. I believe they were buried on their farm. I'm just at a loss as to where i can find her. I have a great lady from Texas helping me, but she is there and i'm in WV. without her I would be nowhere. Just looking for fresh ideas. Yes Nancy is the Patriot daughter her husband was a Welsh the same as my husband
Have you tried to contact the local library or county Historial Society or RAOGK to see if you can find an obituary? It should list next of kin. If the local funeral home is still in operation its possible they would have next of kin in the records. Baptistal records may be available or a family bible.

Here is a couple of things I found online in HQ and google books

Thats amazing what you found. John Colgate was Asaph's father. Nancy was born in 1790, i understand, but you know how that is. LOL. I have been working on this for 6 months and I'm sure you can tell i don't know a lot about where to look except court houses. What is RAOGK? I never heard of that, and what is HQ @ google books. How do I get to these places? Maybe I can find something there. Been about read to give up. There were no funeral arrangements that I could find. I think they were buried onthe farm. Dianne

I have a nice lady in Texas that lived in WV once that has been helping me. I live in Fairmont. I am looking at the chapter in Morgantown, because my daughter lives in Mon. County. I havn't met with the Register yet. I still have some Births and deaths to get. She says I need a real connection to Asaph from Nancy. That would be great to have the state Register's addy. Thanks a bunch Patsy. Every little bit helps LOL Dianne
