My maternal great-grandfather John Henfling (I've seen it also spelled Haufling, Hemphling, Hempfling, also with a first name Johan) born possibly October 1852 in Bade (spelled that way in USA 1880 Federal Census), which I assume is Baden, Germany. Came to New York City, NY, USA in early 1870s from Germany. Married about 1876 in New York City to Bertha Lutz, who was born in Switzerland. John died March 1905 in New York City.

I'm seeking any info on his life & relatives in Germany. I speak & read only English, not German or Swiss.

Other Surnames  names connected to Birkicht/Zipperle surnames are Voglin, Bechold, Schwentzerin,/Schwentzer, Obermaennin.

I have Edward Almon (1842/1919) from Studholm Parish, Kings Co. New Brunswick, Canada,  on  04 Sep 1873 at St Lukes Anglican Church, Saint John New Brunswick, Canada., married  Rosina Chirstina Birkicht, (1848,-1949) from Germany. Her father was Jacob Christoff Birkicht.

Another question for you wonderful people...I'm attempting to search my great-grandfather's military service.  I know that he was in the Nazi Army during World War II.  Then at some point he was captured (not sure where) and sent to a POW camp in Yugoslavia.  I know nothing about searching military records in foreign countries.  I've been focused on the Civil War here in the United States.

My question is, is it possible to scan records/search records here in the United States without making a trip to Germany?  The war is a very emotional topic for my grandmother and she was only 10 when the war ended so she doesn't know very much of my great-grandfather's service.  Any help or direction would be very much appreciated.

I am researching Shanabarger which I think is a derivative of Schoenberger.  Earliest name I have is Samuel b. c1800 who married Sophia Brant. They were in Fayette county in 1824. His father may be Wilhelm Schoenberger b c1780 who married Matilda Brannon.  He may have been an immigrant.

Other German surnames:  Buchener/Beckner, Stalnaker, Stemple, Hoffman, Pifer/Pfeiffer.

All ancestors settled in VA - now WV.

I am seeking info on my great grandfather named Eugene Bertz born Baden Wurttemburg Germany.   He was married to a Deborah or Mariah Stowe in NY and had one daughter named Minnie in 1872.  The only record I have found of anyone of this name on ancestry married a Jessie Dixon in Kansas where he died. I do not know if Minnies mother died, or divorced, I cannot find Minnie on any census prior to her marriage in 1888 so this is a brick wall for me.

According to my g-aunt her grandfather came from Karlsruhe Germany. His name on the marriage registration record (married a Swiss gal in Canada during 1876) is Francisi Charles Coy (could be anglosized version - went by Charles Coy on onther Canadian records). His parents as shown on this record are Catherine and Mathew Coy. He is shown as being born in Germany in 1854. According to a Canadian census, he migrated to Canada in 1871 or 73,  making him about 20 years old when he moved to Canada. I am attempting to find his passenger list and birth record. I am also looking for his siblings (assuming there some) as well.  I would also like to find the family history from Karlsruhe on back in earlier history... grandparents, etc. if possible?

though i recently met a new Becker cousin and was given more info that i need to investigate, include ancestors.


I'm also researching my best friends family. All german, but from Bohemia and Russia, migrating to Nebraska.

Peter Reinhardt and Mary Virtz b 1850s in Russia
John Reinhardt and Charlotte Sinner b c 1890 Russia, migrated to Nebraska (she was dau of Jacob Sinner and mary kauser)
Edward Reinhardt and Esther Schneider (my friends paternal grandparents)

then

Wenzel Plaschka and Katherine [unk] b mid 1800s in Bohemia. migrated to Kansas
Edward Plaschka and Ilo Fredericks (see below)
Anna Plaschka and William Robinson (friends maternal grandparents)

Now Ilo Frederick appears to be German as well. I still have alot to do on her line though, which was in the US longer than all others. and moved around alot

Mine is a fair ways back. My Johan Heinrich Becker moved from Hessia to Nova Scotia in the mid 1700s or so. The named morphed to Baker by the early 1800s.
