PhpGedView was a free, collaborative genealogy program it is no longer being maintained.
It was replaced by WebTrees, which is much more stable - check it out at - http://www.webtrees.net

Thanks for the info. Some of this I knew, but it was good to hear your opinion on it. I have wondered about changing and will now look at it more closely.
I found this review that Dick Eastman did back in 2010 when webtrees first launched, there is a some talk about the technical differences, more in the comments at the end.

I would say the big difference is speed, we live rurally and sometimes our internet connection is slow, my PHPgedview page got to the point where most of the boxes on the homepage we just hopelessly spinning.
I think this new program handles the media differently some how, I am no expert.
But for me the fact that it is getting regular updates means that it isnt falling behind things like browsers, I am no expert but my host has gone to a new version of HTML, PHP and SQL just in the last few months, and I feel like they did last year too??? I don't know for sure that with out updating the software, that PHPGedview will work forever???
I will just repeat speed, it is so much nicer.
Hope this helps
Randy
Randy C,
Can you help me understand some of the primary differences/updates to "Webtrees" when compared to PhpGedView?
Hi all,
Just thought I would let you know that it looks as if Phpgedview has kinda died out.
But the good news is that some of the original guys have forked off and started "Webtrees" and it is going great
