I do think it is something we should discuss, especially now that Ancestry have extended the searchable birth, marriage and death indexes right through to 2005 (though there is still a gap between 1915 and 1984 for the death indexes - soon to be completed I hear).

However, the details on Ancestry are only available to people who are prepared to either pay an annual subscription or to use a pay per view access - which is not quite the same as us publishing the information about recent births, marriages and deaths on our Adamthwaite Archive where they would be freely viewable to anyone with access to the internet.

One solution could be to create 'members only' pages on the Adamthwaite Archive, which contained the more recent details. This is quite feasible with the new website design program I am using, and requires people to register with Moonfruit (the web design co) and apply for a password to give them access to the sensitive pages. It is a minor hassle at first, but then you just log in whenever you want to view anything on the private pages. This would also allow us to include photos, stories and recollections of living Adamthwaites. If anyone wants to see how the system works, I have just started to update my own family history website with just this system - what I have done so far is at http://www.mastel.moonfruit.com/# I have only completed the Appleby/Mastel section so far. Only members can access the details about 'generation 1' after clicking on the red button at the bottom of the page. If anyone wants to test it out and give me their views I am very happy to let you in!!

The fact the you have to pay to make BMD records "freely available" is not in my opinion a reason to limit adding those after our cut off date on the ADAMTHWAITE ARCHIVE. You have to pay to find certificates and afterwards purchase the actual documents. You can purchase any that you choose whether they are your own name or not. To me that means that they are in the public domain. If you accept that then the only reason for limiting what we put on the ARCHIVE as to avoid possibly offending someone. Bob

Thanks for your comments. I am not dogmatic about recording recent BMDs but thought that it would make things much easier if there was no date cut off. I seem to forget the cut off date and go into the ARCHIVE to search only to realise that the later BMD's are not there. What will happen to all the data that we have collected individually?
Another snag is that people tend to live longer and longer so the cut off date must receed over the years if we are to avoid upsetting anyone. .
