How do I export my Ancestry.com tree (via gedcom) to Family Tree Maker 2010 and merge new information to existing people without creating duplicate entries? For example, assume I have the exact date of birth. I merge my online individual with my FTM individual, having marked my FTM person DOB as "discard fact" and don't save source. I still get a duplicate entry.

Any suggestions?

I am trying to find my great great grandfather,i was told his name was Samuel Campbell. My great grandfathers name was Charles Caper Campbell,he had a twin brother named John Byron Campbell born 1877 in New York. Have found Charles in the 1880 census with his mother Mary Francis Terbush, and his brother John living with his mothers brother. Their last name is spelled Cammel and it says that Mary is a widow. Then in the 1900 census i find Mary and John in the 1900 census living with Mary's father in Poughkeepsie New York. I don't find my great grandfather again until the 1910 census living in Mt. Oliver,Pennsylvania. Any info on Charles father would be appreciated, te Campbell names stops here for know. Would like to trace it back further.

Robert, thanks for the explanation. I now feel comfortable downloading the Ancestry GEDCOM. You've also reinforced my decision to keep my tree on Ancestry broken into four family group, i.e., father (paternal and maternal), mother (paternal and maternal). I'm finding it easier to work with smaller groups online. Along with the four groups, I have one combined tree in FTM so I can just merge the individual ones into the combined.

Robert,
Question: in downloading the GEDCOM from Ancestry and importing it into FTM 2010, are the private notes, etc. that are in FTM retained? I suspect they are but I'd confirmation before I try your method of maintaining the trees in both locations.

Jo, I believe I found your Eleanor Hallet. I can send it through your web page but I think you have to accept me as a friend first.

Cecily

PS, you must be proud to be Canadian!
