Hi all I am a member of Ancestry like you and love working on my Lineage as you all do. My Lines are as follows: Smith(maiden) and Davis my married name. I've been doing genealogy since the 80's and have found alot of information from Ancestry and also through alot of hard work from other people. Oh I've done my fair share too. But if it wasn't for people like you and who like to share I don't think we all would get very far very fast. I just want to thank everyone who have helped me locate important information on my lineage. And would converse with everyone who warrants it.  Sincerely, Judith Davis

I've used Ancestry for the two years I've been researching.  I've always fallen into a "duplicate record" trap - from their "hints" to add people that are already on the tree.  I've become much more careful but it still happens.  My tree is over 5,000 records.  Now periodically, say quarterly, I gedcom a file to Reunion; then use that to export a minimum text file to a spreadsheet.  From there it is pretty easy to test for dups & correct them in Ancestry.  Thought I'd pass this along as I've not seen a better way to clean up a large file.  Jim

Yea ! their "free Offer" Ive been trying to use it for two days and it always just sends
me to the subscribe page. I saw the ad on TV. :-( So much for Ancestry.

Anyone having difficulties this weekend downloading trees from Ancestry? After many tries I was finally able to download a GEDCOM file for use in Legacy software. However, when I try to download a tree for use in my new FTM2011 I am getting a script error which I'm posting here. I went through much of the Help FAQ's on Ancestry but cannot find anything related to this problem. I even tried my old version of FTM2010 which has always worked and now that doesn't either. I actually uninstalled the new FTM2011 and reinstalled with no luck. I'm getting very frustrated. I did write an email to Ancestry about the problem. I thought maybe it might be due to overload on their servers this weekend due to the free offer they have going on. Java and JavaScript are enabled on my Firefox browser. This is the message I get:

That didn't work. What it did was append the ', Sr' to the end of the surname, making his surname spelled different than his father's or children's.

Hi Marilyn,

Not trying to "one up on you" but I have immediate family that has a tree but refuses to respond to my emails. Maya Angelou said, "When people show you who they are, believe them the first time!" I have gathered a lot of information over the years and thankfully I know how to do the research. I did not post any of my information because I don't have ancestry.com or any other service. I hope you get the information you are looking for because success is the sweetest revenge (for a lack of a better word). Hopefully with your information out there, someone will contact you or you will be able to contact another family member. I have been doing research for ten years on and off; so it takes time.

I think my 1st cousin, would top your distant cousin. He has had access to all of his mother's information and will not share any information or answer my emails. His mother recently passed away and now I can not even get copies of the pictures she had from her mother, my grandmother. I did get a few through the years and his mother did give me copies of some work done by a distant cousin in Texas. But from him I get nothing. So frustrating, but I check his tree on Ancestry on a regular basis. I still have mine private because I need to do some clean up. I am waiting for him to see all the Death Certificates, I recently acquired.

What troubles me about research posted on genealogy websites is that information is almost never exclusive to the person posting it. Some where we find information that someone else has researched: Too many times, I have seen blogs where someone asks for information that gives clues. In one case, a distant cousin asked for information, copied it, and then refused to share it. He now has over 2,000 people on his tree and does not respond to email requests to share the information.

I understand how frustrating it can be to post public your family tree but keep in mind that someone has helped you to gather the information at some point in your research. We cannot take or expect to get credit for research that someone else has helped us gather either through clues or direct information.

I think the answer is Jr and Sr should have a comma after the Surname. No comma when III, IV is used

What is the proper way to add suffixes (Sr, Jr etc) to a person's name in an Ancestry.com family tree, so that it will appear properly in a gedcom once it is downloaded?
