I had uploaded an abbreviated version of my tree to Ancestry.com so that I could test syncing it to my iPhone-and I have to say that feature is awesome for referring to (I wouldn't do data entry that way though). I had marked the tree as private, but *just* changed it to public tonight. I'll be testing how that goes. The reason for the change was partly the question here, but also to try and make more connections. I would say that if you are worried about people taking your research and claiming as their own, play around with just uploading the bare-bones (ie: I don't have any of my source citations uploaded; if folks want to know, they can contact me). Even as a private tree it will show you the "hints" and that is nice for making connections with others.

I just renewed my Ancestry subscription. I had considered letting it lapse, thinking I was just about done on one side and met an impossible gap on the other, but two things happened. One, my laptop where I have detailed family trees and gedcoms broke down. I cannot acess the information on it, but fortunately I had the trees posted on Ancestry, although with less detail, still accessible to me! The other thing is I was recently contacted by two different descendants of a mutual ancestor from overseas. As I said, I don't travel, and if I had not posted it is certain I never would have been able to pass on my family information. I am the last "elder" on my side of the family, and the few younger generations are still in the yawning stage. So it was pleasing to have someone related and interested to share with.

I realized that my geds saved on cd disks cannot be read by my new laptop dvd drive, and that the hard drive can stop, too, so it's online storage for me.
It was also heartening to know that not all the branches had dwindled away. I kept finding death notices for each generation of young people who did not have issue, so so figured it was pretty much the end of the story. But NO! Life does go on! I feel a renewed interest in the hunt.

I downloaded my family tree on Ancestry and have been in contact with distant cousins who I may not have found otherwise. Unfortunately, people will copy your information. I think the benefits of posting a public family tree vs. a private one is worth it because of the cousins you might come in contact with.

I'm still not comfortable downloading my family tree to Ancestry.com. I have over 5000 family names and my tree would be valuable to others. Anybody have any suggestions on this .Any experiences? I kind of feel people will copy my research and not give me credit. Maybe I should post it as private instead of public?

Anybody here know how to enter "dit" French Canadian surnames into an Ancestry.com tree? For those who don't know this "dit" means "known as" and was used to denote various braanches of the family. They would choose another surname and yet retain the origianl one so you got two surnames.

An example I have is a Jacques Levesque dit LaFrance. Michale Levesque was his father's name. I get an error message which I overroad in Ancestry and have the two surnames with this "dit" in the surname field. I also wonder how this will download into both FTM2010 and Legacy. Thanks for any advice you might have.

I would not pull the information, if I were you. You might be able to later resubscribe to Ancestry. I have been through those times when I could not afford the cost. In fact right now I am on the monthly subscription. Sometimes I have to cancel and resubscribe in a couple of months.

Watch for their specials as another method for keeping the cost down. Right now I am only paying $15.95 a month , which is saving me $5.00 a month. That is only good for 3 months but that almost pays for another month. They have periods when certain records are free for a limited time.

Another thought that might work would be to access your tree through a library. I am not sure if that would let you add to your tree or not.

I have been using ancestry for a while. I've got a rather sizable family tree also on the site with 7056 individuals & over a 1000 photos & images. However, with the downturn of the economy, my budget hasn't been able to squeeze out enough to continue paying for membership & that has drastically halted my ability to access the hints & documents I am needing to access. So for me, the site is more a tease, than a tool. Its very frustrating to go to my family tree & see "hint" leaves all over it & 99% of them I can't access unless I pay. So I've decided to pull all my personal information out of my tree & keep it in the old fashioned paper format at home. At least then the tease is over.

I just got off the phone with tech support. The problem with printing images (from books) is at their end, not mine. They're working on it. I'm not thrilled, but am glad to know that it's not an issue with my computer or printer.

@Gene
Don't know what I did wrong befroe, but went back through steps again very carefully, and this time it worked!! Thank you so much. Now I don't have to go back and forth between the desktop and the laptop to save an image. I can save it on my laptop to any directory I choose. Finally.

Thanks again
Sandra
