Hello! I wonder if anyone could help with researching my ancestor Richard Mew?

Born in about 1814 in Uckfield, Sussex, he joined the Marines at an early age. By 1838 he was in Australia (New South Wales?) and had married a girl Margaret.

His first daughter Mary Ann was born in about 1839, his second Margaret in about 1841 and third Eliza in about 1843 (apparently in Sidney or Adelaide).

It looks as if he returned finally to England in about 1845 when his fourth daughter Martha was born at sea.

That's all i know about him pre-1845 and anything you can add would be greatly appreciated.

Paul, in London.

Hi Paul

Go to http://trove.nla.gov.au/ and search on Richard+mew and you will find a marriage notice giving Margaret's surname.

Hi, Cheryl.

You are such a star! That puts me well ahead.

Hi, Paul,

I've just caught up with this, and while I can't help personally, we do have a Mew family here in Broken Hill (New South Wales) who have been very involved in Family History. I am the director of our local FamilySearch Centre, and Roy used to come in very regularly - I know he has done a LOT of research. His health is not good now, but he has a son, Phil, who is our weather man. If you think this family may be able to assist you, I'll contact Phil, and then link you to him. Sorry it has taken me so long to get round to checking all the links on this site, I've been up to my eyeballs sorting out a mess on new.familysearch, and helping others with their research at the Centre.

Best of luck with it all, Denise
Correction : The father is Roy Mew, not Ralph!

Hi, Denise, lovely to hear from you.

As far as we know, when Richard & Margaret returned to England in about 1845 they didn't leave any children behind in Oz. HOWEVER, some of them disappear off the horizon later on and we wondered if any went back to sunnier climes!

I'd be very grateful indeed to find out more about Ozzie Mews - especially if they can be traced back to one or more definite "founders". It will then be most interesting to see whether they can be connected to my Uckfield, Sussex branch!

Very best wishes.

Paul
