Hello Carmel and Anne - as you know I am part of the Batten Family that set up the Mechanic's Institute. Well on a recent trip to Vic I made an appointment with the staff at the Institute Library to call in and see for ourselves what it was all about. The staff were very helpful in every way possible took us on a tour of the building and allowed us to take as many photo's as we could possibly get, which was very rewarding to say the least, then low and behold another historian turned up and we were introduced to him who we were, then said come with me and out of the blue he showed us old photo albums and photos that were donated after the Batten residence at 8 DANA St was auctioned off and what a bonus that was, my poor wife was nearly in tears as she remember the uncles and aunties and her father in all the photos and one special one with her as well.

We topped that day off by going to see the grave site of all the family very sad though as most of the wording etc had fallen off over the years.

The Cemetery itself is very old and it's a pity that the grave sites of others are deteriorating rapidly. This brings me to say that there could and should be committees through out Australia not just Ballarat that are funded by Government grants so that historical cemeteries such as these could be maintained and preserved and not left up to councils' that clearly donot have budgets to cater for their cemeteries in this manner.

Other than that our visit to Ballarat for this out standing information was very rewarding.

Even though I'm in New Zealand, I'd like to think I can share with, or benefit from the knowledge other people with special interests have. I have been prompted to join groups that interest me as a result of assignments I have been carrying out on Social Networking for the wise genealogist. Some of your names are very familiar. I operate my own research business from Auckland.

Anybody who is interested in getting a copy of "Against The Wind" starring Jon English, should go to Homecare.com.au and do a search for the DVD set. You can order it online and the local Distributor will deliver it to you. Hope this helps anybody who wants a copy. Yes, i am a Distributor for the company, however I will only get commission for sales in my own territory.
