Hi Chez
welcome to the Aussie group.you have an interesting ancestry with first fleeters. You will have noticed a few changes in research methodology and access to records over the years.
Like you, I have found both my research into my ancestors and courses at NIGS very enjoyable. I am also living in New South Wales at Lake Macquarie and have ancestry links mainly to Scotland and Italy.
Cheers
Brian
Hello all
I have recently joined genealogywise and I have just joined this group! I recognise some names but for those I have not yet met. I have been researching my family history for over 35 years. I have done a few of the NIGS courses over the years! I am a mum to three and live in NSW. Descendant of First Fleeters on both sides, and both sets were married on Norfolk Island (the females were the convicts!) as they were there during the first settlement. My 6 x great grandmother was born on Norfolk Island before coming with her parents back to the mainland and settling in the Hawkesbury. Another set of grandparents (maternal line) would go to Norfolk Island in the second settlement and have another of my grandparents there!
My children have confirmed heritage in Ireland; Scotland; England; Poland; Germany and we have learned have Ashkenazi Jewish heritage too.
I love genealogy as there is always something to learn.

If you had ancestors who came to Queensland on either the SS Torilla or SS Roscommon in 1912-1912 then have a look at the Passenger Research Project SS Torilla and SS Roscommon page, post a message or contact me at dataedgegenealogy@gmail.com.
Brian
Hi Cheryl
that sounds like a good idea. I have ship trees on Ancestry and this has brought some interaction with people related to passengers. When I am back in my study I will have a look at it. Strathclyde University offered me a Masters degree on the research but the $20,000 fees I couldn’t justify especially at my age.
thanks again for the suggestion.
Brian
Hi Brian
That sounds like a great research project! Have you considered starting a GenealogyWise Group specifically for each of those 2 ships? Then invite people to join the groups. :)
Cheryl
Did you have ancestors who came to Australia on either the SS Torilla in 1911 or the SS Roscommon in 1912 then I would be interested in talking with you. To explain I am undertaking a study to see if any families on these two ships may have known other families prior to departing London or after arriving in Queensland. My parents came on these ships as young children. My research is expected to take about three years but I have already found families on the ships that were related to my maternal ancestors.
Look forward to any comments.
Brian
