I have traced my family (Gibb) back to Mauchline & Kilmarnock in the late 1700's/early 1800's. Looking for anyone who may be connected or any info at all.

hi John, I am a fledgling family researcher, my grandfather (cockburn) was born in saltcoats, came out with siblings and his Mum (Janet Gibb Cockburn) in the early 1900's some time after his father died in a train crash. his mother eventually returned to ayshire and I am interested in any info - dont know if your 'Gibb' is connected with mine however.

Hi Suzanne. Not sure if we have connection or not but I do have Janet Gibb throughtout my tree.
Willaim Gibb and his wife Janet Marr had a daughter Janet b. abt. 1831 in Mauchline d. 5th Nov 1880.
Hamilton Gibb and his wife Margaret Bowman had a daughter Janet Marr Gibb b. 19th Feb 1855 in Kilmarnock.
James Gibb and his wife Maragret Clark had a daughter Janet b. abt. 1852 in Kilmarnock.
James Gibb and his wife Jane Wallace had a daughter Jane b, 28th May 1873 in Glasgow.
Do you recognise any of these names? Do you have any history of your Janet e.g. mothers or fathers names?
hello John

thanks for coming back to me. my Janet Gibb died in 1944 - I dont have her birthdate handy, but will go back to my grandfather's birth certificate in the w.e. and come back to you. I think a birthdate of 1855 or 1852 is a bit early, but 1873 may be a fit....

I will come back to you after a dig around in my box of papers
Hi John

I've had a dig, and I have her the date of her birth, but not the year, and a comment that she was born in London, and also that she eventually died in australia. But I know when my grandparents married she had returned to scotland. so I am going to have to dig a bit more cause I dont have any details of her parents etc. sigh....
Keep digging and good luck. We may not be connected but if you find any evidence for a Mauchline/Kilmarnock or Scottish connection I'll have a look in SP for you.
Hi John

have been in correspondence with a cousin, who tells me that Janet Gibb was born and reared in London. According to verbal family history her father was Laird William Gibb, he apparently sold his land - whatever he may have had, to the English, but by the time Janet married John Cockburn there was no money left. John Cockburn died in a train crash in 1913, Janet was left with I think 9 children, the youngest under a year old. She, and the children, travelled at different times backwards and forwards between Scotland, New Zealand and Australia. She lived in auckland for a time, but, according to family heresay, had trouble coping with our 'classless' system here, i.e. she was a bit of a 'lady'. I am still waiting on further information from another cousin in Australia. these are people in their 80's and 90's so I am running out of time!!

regards

sue
