Richard BALL (my 4th great grandfather) was born in 1755. There is some confusion as to where: some records say 'North Poole' - and the rest of his life was spent in South Pool, Devon. Was there ever a North Pool? Or does this refer to Poole in Dorset?
Anyway, Richard married Susanna STONE (from South Pool) on 6 May 1777 - in South Pool. the couple had (at least) James (1777), Susanna (1778), Richard (1779), George (1786), William (1788), Mary Ann (1790), John (1794-1834), Jacob (1792-1856), and James (1802-1856). I only recently found out that James was part of this family - so I am in fact descended both from Jacob 1792 and his younger brother.
Jacob, born in 1792, married Jane DISTIN on 25 December 1818 in South Pool. Possibly a Christmas Day wedding was essential because that was the only day they had off work? Jacob and Jane had John (1819-1890), Jacob (1821-1868), William (1823), Elizabeth (1826-1893), Harriet (1828-1890), James (1831-1910), Samuel (1833-1899), Joseph (1836), and Ann (1839-1905).
In the meantime, his younger brother, James, christened on 8 August 1802 in South Pool, married Grace JEFFERY on 31 March 1829 in East Allington. The couple had Jane Jeffery BALL (1829-1830), Jane (1831-1880), Susan (1837-1920), and Sarah (1840). Jane 1831 was my great-great-grandmother; she married a DAMERELL, and the line continued with that surname.
Jacob's son, John (christened on 2 May 1819 in South Pool), married Eliza ELLIOTT, christened the year before in the same place. They married on 17 February 1848. John raised Eliza's son from a previous relationship (Thomas Damarell ELLIOTT, 1838-1910), and together the couple had: Ellen Elliott (1848-1935), Benjamin (1850-1908), George (1852-1911), Mary Jane (1854-1870), Charles Samuel (1856-1914), William John (1859-1937), and Sarah Ann (1861-1862).
William John was my great-grandfather, and married Bertha DAMERELL on 14 December 1879 in Southampton, Hampshire. They had 3 girls and 7 boys, one of whom was my grandfather.
