My maternal ancesters came from the Hainaut Province in Belgium. This is a link to my family tree on Ancestry.com: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/184741/family/pedigree. I have traced some famiies back to the mid-1600's. I've done all my research at the LDS Family History Centers. They have wonderful records. Other names I've researched in Belgium, other than DUEZ and DERSIN are: FASSIEAU, GONDRY, FRANQUEZ, LAURENT, DAMIEN, DRAGUET, BROHET, BOUVIER, PICHEL, DEBRUE, LASSOIS, HOUGNE, HUGE, URBAIN, GERIN, FINET.
I also have a question. I followed a line back as far as I could that ended with Margueritt Laurent who died in 1712. While I was looking thru the church records of baptisms, I realized Margueritt had a daughter that was a midwife and that daughter's daughter was a midwife. The records in Margueritt's time didn't say who the midwife was. But I would guess she was since it tended to run in the family.
Were there midwife guilds or some kind of records of midwives in Belgium? (other than naming the midwife in church records).
I've always wished I could get more information about my Wallon ancesters but I can just read enough French to read BMD records.
