Hi Beazley,  The Blue Marlin is almost next door to where Susan Bostick lived on Gervais. She lived on Gervais between Lincoln and Gates. (Gates is now called Park) Susan (Suckey) lived with Lady Street behind her.

Hi Beazley,  You forgot to tell me if you have ever been to The Blue Marlin in Columbia.

Thanks, Beazley!  The University of South Carolina is the answer for Hazel!

The Susan Bostick family were free people of color and had their own slaves. I do not know who the slaves were but possibly family members or friends of Susan's?

I do not know if Joel is related to Susan but they could have known each other. Joel is listed as a Planter and owning his own land. Susan had the Cottage in Columbia. I do not know if they purchased the property themselves or if it was part of a manumission. It is possible that Susan and Joel were never slaves. Susan was not a slave in 1830.

I would love to hear more of what your mother said about the Bosticks. Did she know about Joel being a planter and having his own land?  Did she know where this was located in Richland County?

I know no more about Jack other than he was constantly wanted by the college.  John Bostick would hire him out and if they could not get a hold of John they would have Andrew Wallace reach John Bostick with the news that Jack was needed.  James hired Jack out also.  Jack must have been an amazing man.  Sure wish I could find more.  I saw no last name for Jack but I think they said he worked in the labs. Chemistry Lab?
