I'm interested in the line from Thomas BOXSELL (baptised BOXHILL at Salehurst, SSX on 3 Mar 1799 to William BOXHALL and Ann DAVIS).

Thomas farmed at Poppinghole Farm, near Robertsbridge, SSX.

On 5 Feb 1821 at Salehurst, Thomas married Mary PUXTED (baptised PUXTY at Ewhurst, SSX on 24 Oct 1802 to John PUXTY and Eleanor GOODSELL).

In 1839 Thomas, Mary and their four youngest children sailed for Australia aboard the "Neptune".

The three eldest children (Mary 1821, Thomas 1824, William 1826) did not sail with their parents, and we have not been able to trace what became of them.

Any information appreciated.

Hi John;
I've just spent some time looking for your family.

I believe this is your Williams' Baptism:
Baptism: BOXHALL William,04-Jun 1767, SSX, Rye, s/o Nicholas & Martha (BVRIv2)

Nicholas BOXHALL (BOXSELL) bc 1740 m. Martha ELLIS 16 Nov 1760 Rotherfield, Ssx.
They had 8 Children: Betty, Mercy, Nicholas, William, Ann, Martha, John and Benjamin. All baptized in Rye, Ssx.
Mercy BOXSELL is in Salehurst Ssx aged 75 in 1841 (HO107/1108/7/13/19)
Benjamin BOXSELL is in Ewhurst, Ssx, aged 60 with Charlotte aged 60, (HO107/1109/10/42/6).

So this does give us an indication that the family moved around the area; We also know that Thomas and Mary BOXSELL were non-conformist as two of the three first children were baptized in Weslyan Church in Sandhurst by Croydon, Kent. The name also went through many different variations before it Thomas settled for BOXSELL. I have the following spellings: BOXHILL, BOXHALL, BOXALL, BOXAL.

I do believe I have found Mary BOXSELL for you in 1841.
Mary BOXSELL bc. 1822 she is with Richard and Philidelphia BOXSELL's family in Greenwich Town, Kent.
Richard BOXSELL and Philidelphia WESTON m. abt 1827/8
Richard BOXHILL baptized 24-Mar 1803 SSX, Salehurst, s/o Benjamin BOXAL & Charlotte DUNK they m. 26 Dec 1801 Salehurst, Ssx.
Benjamin BOXAL baptized 25-May 1777, SSX, Rye, s/o Nicholas & Mary(sic).
Benjamin is the brother of William BOXHALL bc 1767 Rye, Ssx
William is the father of Thomas who married Mary PUXTED.

I may have found the other two but I have to try to replicate my search.

I hope this is a help to you.
Regards
Ronnie
Thanks Ronnie.

I concur with what you have found on the generations prior to Thomas.

It is interesting that Mary was living with Richard and Philadelphia in 1841 - seems reasonable to stay with your father's cousin if you didn't go with your family to Australia. Even more interesting when you realise that Richard and Philadelphia also came to Australia (in 1853, on the "Tamar") - and there is no sign of Mary in the shipping records for the voyage.

So I think it's certain that Mary either married or died in England in the 1841-1853 period.

John
