I have a problem with my great-grandfather Oscar Merry Packard.

He was the son of Matthew Hale Packard and Emily A. Hoyt, who came from Stanstead County, around Georgeville or Bolton. They were married in Bolton. Oscar Merry Packard's middle name came from family friends of the surname Merry in the same location. Oscar was born around 1848, and I think he was born in Hamilton, Ontario. After he was born, the family emigrated to New York, right across the lake to Chautauqua County.

I'd be grateful if someone could give me some hints on how to proceed to find whether Oscar was indeed born in Hamilton.

If he was baptized, surely he would be in the church records. Church records are a great source.
They can be. You just have to know which church! (grin)

Actually, Oscar's great-grandfather was a Methodist preacher, so that's a good bet. I'll see if the LDS Family History Center might have some potentially relevant records.

Thanks for the reply.
Hey, John. Thanks for replying.

I have the marriage certificate. They married in Bloomington, Illinois. Illinois had very little information on marriage records at that time -- the bride and groom's names and the date of marriage is it. They started collecting more information in 1872, so why couldn't my great-grandparents have waited a year? (smile)

I'll check the Family History Library Catalog. Thanks.
