My great grandfather George Alfred Peters was born on a sailing ship off
Canada in 1884. They landed in St John and he was given Canadian
citizenship - or so the story goes. I believe George's father, John
Alfred Peters, was a sea captain - this information is from George's
marriage registration. The family story is that John Alfred Peters was
born in Scotland and went to Norway where he married (wife is unknown
(possible Nina?)) and was given a sailing vessel by her father. I have not yet been able to find any trace of either John or George other than George's marriage registration.

If George was given citizenship would he appear in the New Brunswick
birth register? I can't seem to find him there.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks

Interests: Nickell/Ramsay in Esquesing Twp, Halton Co Ont; Roszel/Vanatter in Wellington Co. Ont. I love Canadian genealogy. They are very generous with their vital records. Brick Wall: William Nickell b. 1792 in Ireland, m. Margaret Ramsay(?) b. in Ireland/Scotland. Lots of info on their descendants, but ascendants...NO. Have collected info on Halton Co, and much on the family of John Ramsay, Jr., of Nassagaweya twp and Eramosa twp, who turned out to be the wrong family! Still keep an eye out for them as I got attached. In need of clues to proceed.

Sellwood , Ontario, Canada

Can anyone tell me why the now ghost town, Sellwood, in Ontario, was so called? I have learned a fair bit about its history but the reason for its name eludes me.
I am hoping that one of my long ago relatives may have something to do with it.

I have several family names in Nova Scotia that I'm interested in. LETTENEY, KINNEY, PRIME, MULLEN, SABEAN, DOTY, POOLE, WARNE, WYMAN, REDDEN, TRENHOLM, COLDWELL.

When my grandfather came down to MA in the 1920's his last name went from KINNEY to KENNEY.

I am looking for the ancestors of Michel (or Mitchell) Vasher (born in Canada in 1855 & emigrated to the United States with his wife Catherine, maiden name Livernois, born about 1860 - also looking for her ancestors). Their children in the US include my maternal grandmother Louise Julia Vasher (who married John Joseph Polzin), Josephine, Vincent, Stephen (wife Evelyn), John (wife Gertrude), & Henry (wife Lucy, son Carl).) Please advise. Thanks.

This will probably be a long shot,....but I am trying to trace the descendants of George GIDLEY (born 17 Oct 1862 in GreystoneBridge, Lezant, Cornwall) & Sophia Ellen SARGENT (born 22 Mar 1861 in North Tamterton, Cornwall), who were married on 13 Oct 1881 in North Tamterton, Cornwall.
George & Sophia emigrated with 5 of their 6 surviving children to London, Ontario, Canada during 1893. I know from the 1911 Canadian Census that some of the family members were living at 108 Forward Ave, London, Ontario.
The children being;-
Albert Henry GIDLEY, born 15 Sep 1885 in Boyton, Cornwall
Walter Willie GIDLEY, born 3 Apr 1887 in Boyton - He married Grace Mildred WELCH on 29 Oct 1913 in Dutton, Elgin County, Ontario. His profession in 1913 is recorded as Butcher.
Sydney GIDLEY, born 4 Apr 1889 in Boyton
Maud Ellen GIDLEY, born 11 June 1891 in Boyton - She married Thomas William GREYMER on 29 Jan 1910 in London, Ontario.
Ethel Jane GIDLEY, born 9 Mar 1893 in Boyton - She married Joseph Richard DWYER on 19 Jan 1914 in London, Ontario. On 29 Apr 1922 they were living at 137 Wilson Ave, London, Ontario.
George & Sophia then had 2 further children I am aware of born in London, Ontario;-
Isabell Sargent GIDLEY, born 16 Feb 1896 - She married Edward Gordon MOORE on 29 Apr 1922 in London, Ontario.
Frederick GIDLEY, born 29 May 1898

George GIDLEY (1862) is the son of my 2nd Gt Grandfather's first marriage (George GIDLEY & Mary Jane WERRING married 22 Aug 1861 in Launceston, Cornwall), so makes him my half Gt GrandUncle. I would like to find out what became of him, Sophia, their children and their descendants after they settled in Canada.
Any information or directions as to where I can go to find out any more information on this family would be appreciated.
Thanks
Michael
