Concerning discrepancies on census forms, i.e, d.o.b., born in, etc. Census takers did go door to door and record the information. People in the past didn't really pay too much attention to when they were born, the year, day, etc. and later in life had to make a guess themselves. My gGrandfather was listed in the earlier census as having been born in 1848 but you have to do the math from the 1860 Illinois census. Later he was kisted as having been born in 1853 which would have been impossible because he was listed on the 1860 census. The person in the field taking the census wrote it out in longhand, then it was recorded in the field office and then recorded again by the final Federal Census official. I believe a lot was lost in the translations from one form to the other. Anybody who has ever tried to read some of the handwritten forms know this can be a daunting task and can only be done by zooming in on the internet or with the aid of a magnifying glass if you have a copy.

I have a Benjamin Powel married to Mary Ann Susan Saviel in 1859 her father was John Edward Saviel and her mother was Mary Ann Ogden.
I donot know of Benjamin Powel family.
Mary Ann Susan Saviel was under age when married.

Thos Powell Was married to Sarah (Sally) Jane Jessup.
Children: Mary,William,Robert,Lucy,Besty & George.
William is my great-grandfather.
I can't fine out anything on Thos Powell's Parents Or brothers & Sisters. I would like anything I can get on them.

Hi all I would like to know if anyone know about my greatgrandfather GEORGE THOMAS SAVIEL who was born in 1827 India and married in 1873 Burma to ROSE HNIN SI.
His father was George Saviel who was a Army Officer in 1833 India .
I have research the India Record Office at the British Library on them but have no luck.
I would like to know were I can research for them.

I have one census return in the 19th century where a baby is listed as daughter but is in fact granddaughter - I think some answers may have been given as 'socially correct' rather than accurate. As to birth places, if the family had moved frequently which was common in the agriculture community then the person giving the answers may just have said 'oh heck' they were all born at xxxx, instead of remembering who and where - especially when there may have been 12 children.

The assistant marshals and the early enumerators went door to door and took down the information as it was stated. They tried to talk to the head of the household; failing that to another household member, and, as a last resort, they accepted information from a neighbor.

This (along with erroneous memory on the part of the person answering the census question) explains the many errors that one finds in the census.

In the entry in the 1930 Census for St. Louis City, Missouri, my own name is nearly illegible and is recorded as one word instead of two. I suspect (from the entries) that my mother gave the information, but she never saw that entry, or she would have demanded a correction. "Carolin Sue" became an illegible "Carolinsue" which indexers have rendered (as best they could) as Carolina.
